1/5 turn throttle mod for free!
« on: 19 July 2014, 03:39:45 pm »
Got a bit bored and decided to do the 1/5th turn throttle mod as I've done to ta few of my bikes in the past. Some just buy an R6 throttle tube, but they're 20 odd quid, and I'm a tight arse!  :lol
All I used was a piece of 35mm plasic plumbing pipe, cut an 8mm wide section off it, and glued/pinned it on to t throttle tube. It's really easy.

I took a load of pictures whilst I was doing it, but for some reason I can't upload them from my PC.  :wall

I posted exactly the same thing on the Tiger forum about 2 years ago when I did it to my last bike, so I'll just put the link on here if anyone's interested in doing it.

The only difference is that the throttle housing on the FZ1 has some small lugs inside that need filing down slightly, an the cable ends on mine needed chamfering slightly.

It took me about 1 1/2 hours (had my dinner whilst the glue dried) and now the throttle is 1/5 turn instead of 1/4 turn. :thumbup

Nice mod, must admit 1/4 turn can be a pain when you're going for a blast. Might consider doing this :)

That forum section isn't accessible by the way without joining.

Oh, Erm, I'll stick my photies on from here then.

Here's the standard throttle tube measuring at 37mm dia which gives you about 1/4 turn.

This is the piece I cut out of 35mm pipe, the walls are about 2.5mm thick. I just cut it so as it fitted on the throttle tube like this.

Once glued in place, I cross drilled and glued some 2mm nails in just to be safe.

Once the glue dried, I trimmed them down with a file, and cut some slight grooves in each end near where the cable nipple runs.

Once this is done, you need to gently remove some metal from the two lugs in the housing, but just enough to allow clearance. It's only a couple of mm.

The cable guides needed the ends chamfering slightly, to allow the tube to run free.

Once all put back together, it has reduced the throttle turn by just enough to make it 1/5th. (you might be able to make out the marks I made before I removed it.

C'est voilla! All done for Bugger all!

It cuts down the amount of travel in the throttle from the fully closed to fully opened position.

Just been out in the bike with the modded throttle.
For something so simple, it's made a difference! It makes the bike feel more 'alive' and a bit more spirited.

It's just using more throttle really, but it's a lot easier to get WOT which is what it's all about.
Well worth doing in my eyes.:P

It'd probably kill you on an MT-09. Or save you a fortune on front tyres. :D
