If a bike has clip ons, can you mod to normal bars??
« on: 08 March 2014, 10:29:13 pm »
Hiya fellas,

Looking to change my daily ride from a '98 Tiger to an 05 Triumph Sprint (mate selling and it's mint). Trouble is I've never got on with clip ons so would be looking to change the bars to give a similar riding position to the Fazer.

Never done this before so any advice welcome. Would be looking to have the bars no wider than a standard Fazer boxeye.

Any ideas if this is a good move.....rough cost?

Cheers in advance for any help.

Yeah. It can be done on pretty much most bikes, but why the hell would you want to change the bars on an ST?  They are pretty damn comfy standard.
There's a possibility you can get risers for the bars to make it a bit more upright, but going to the extreme of fitting Renthals is probably not necessary.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Risers..........if that's all I can get enough lift then should be a winner.

Back issue from a bad fall at work some years ago Steve, so can't last long in a semi crouch.

Will have a look to see how much lift I can get,

Cheers fellas  :thumbup

Without looking Genmar are one of very few companies that do clip on risers, you're looking at around £100, had a set on my T'cat, they only rose by 25mm but was a help.

It sounds like your back issue is long term so would it be worth investing in some gilles variobars?
Ok, not cheap but they would last a lifetime, unlimited adjustability and you can buy the correct size clamp for different sized fork tubes separately!

If your thinking of higher bars then there's a good chance you may have to change all the cables that go to the bars as they'll have further to travel and may be to tight.

Cheers Stiggy, good site but couldn't find any for the '06 Sprint - found these which look good but are along the same lines as Renthals.

Also need to bear in mind Mick's point re the length of available cable which would govern which route. Need to have a good look at my mates bike to see how much cable play is there and maybe try it for a day.

Cheers fellas, good stuff!

Well with that kit for lsl any longer cables required are provided in the kit, hence the price!

For some people I think it's these extra costs that makes them limit their choice of bike!

Just watch out, some of these kits you have to 'trim down' the upper fairing.
Fitted one to my R1 and had to chop the fairing and screen down!

Cheers Steve, had another read of the bars on the link I posted earlier and YUP...there it is...."pre cut screen if required".

Reckon on the risers as best bet. Had a play on http://cycle-ergo.com/ and even with 1 inch risers the Sprint gives a forward lean of 27 Degrees compared to 14 Degrees for the Fazer and the Tiger at 2 Degrees - reckon it could be a total non starter.

Had a chat with my mate who has no problem with letting me use it as is for a week to commute to London (500 miles) to see how I get on - keep you posted.

That's where the variobars come into play as they adjust on all axes!

They do look good Stiggy but can't seem to find any for a '55 Sprint.

If you want an upright seating position I don't see why you would buy a sporty tourer?  Why not stick with your Tiger (or get a newer one)?

That's what the wife says  :lol . Fancy a change but don't want a money pit - mate's had the Sprint from new with no expense spared so if I can get it to fit it'll last me!

Any use?

I had a Tiger 1050 for a while, great bike but was a bit boring to me. I made it even better when I tuned it up. Exhaust/airbox/filter/decat/remap. It went like shitoffashovel, and transformed the machine massively. The guy that bought it off me text me when he got home and said he couldn't believe how hard it accelerated!

If it's comfy for ya, why not try and rekindle the love for it by having a go at tuning. (if you haven't already)

Not a bad idea Steve, in fact a bloody good one - the cams from a late 90's Sprint would give me +15Bhp straight off or a 1200 4 from the same era slots straight in and gives me about +20Bhp with the bonus of a smoother lump and more torque. Decision time now..... tweak it or.........................

Just saw this on Ebay

This - good find Rob, cheers  :thumbup . Just need to check the if the yoke plate is the same for the older & newer Sprints, + width of bars to see how much wider they are than the Fazer. Any wider than the Tiger and it's a non starter (London filtering being a factor).

Cheers for the ideas fellas, much appreciated.
