HID projector headlight installation with pictures inside!
« on: 27 December 2012, 08:50:06 pm »
As some of you may know I have been wanting to put HID projectors in my bike since I got it 2 weeks ago. Finally got a chance over the christmas break to do it and I have documented the process.

Any questions or feedback would be much appreciated:

Total costs around 70 pounds.

Should be fine with the MOT, its mainly HID bulbs in halogen reflectors that cause very bad beam pattern and blind oncoming traffic. They should be ok.

This is the one I bought :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2X-2-5-Motorcycle-Bike-HID-BI-XENON-Projectors-Lens-Kit-Bulbs-AC-Ballasts-/150894657745?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item232205c0d1

Yeah both sides are on dipped beam, when full beam is activated a solenoid moves the shield in both projectors to give high beam with both sides.

On mine one side was H1 and the other side H4, Not sure why the stock headlights are like that, something that contributed to them being crap originally was that about 25% of the reflective surface had crumbled away on the inside!

Maybe, I think it'll depend on how lenient the tester is.
HIDs throw out so much more light that they are supposed to be mounted on self levelling mechanisms... something that's not only hard to retrofit, but more necessary on a bike because the short wheelbase means it pitches more than a car for a given sized bump.

Very true. In the past I have had 3 other bikes with similar modifications pass without issues.  My next MOT is in June so fingers crossed.

When I last got my xt600 mot'd it had a HID conversion fitted. I was told by my regular MOT guy that officially they are fine for an MOT pass as long as they are aligned ok (like any headlight needs to be), however their legality can be questioned by the fuzz. That was back in september.

I think starting in 2013, MOT testers are required to fail a car if it has a HID conversion without projectors fitted. I suspect its the same with projectors, but I think it comes down to how lenient the testers are in each case. I suspect as long as its aligned correctly and isn't blinding other traffic then they will be ok.

yup fair enough. I always have good experiences with them, they have good comms and resolved any issues that might arise, im willing to spend a little less and wait a little longer for it to arrive.

Of course, dont worry!

H1, H4, H7 etc are all bulb types, they are different sized, some of them may have one filament (For low beam) some have 2 (for low and high).

Once the Projectors are installed these numbers go out of the window, as they are for the bulbs that have been removed, the h4 bulb has a metal shield that fits into the bulb hole, that's where the projectors and h4 come together that's all.

Originally the fazer has low beam on the left, and high beam on the right. (I think)

Mine now has low beam on both sides, and high beam on both sides :)

I was thinking of doing that too, but they are quite expensive, and you would have to do a lot of damage for it to not be fit for purpose :)
