Gen1 Fuel Gauge Under reading!
« on: 01 May 2012, 11:31:40 am »
I had an argument with Merc early last year which almost wrote my gen 1 off (mainly cosmetic). When I got it back from the insurance company the fuel gauge underead by 1/4 tank!
I questioned this with them and they said they would take it back for a few weeks to diagnose and fix it. I could not afford not to be mobile for that time.
I believed it was the fuel sender & float in the tank and they agreed to send me a replacement.
After I received and fitted it - the fault was still there! I therefore decided to live with it.
Although now a year down the road it's really starting to frustrate me. Do you think it's the clocks / gauge? I'd rather not change them due to the mileage record etc... And/or can you able to calibrate / adjust the gauge needle reading?

Any advice / comments will be appreciated...

As you have changed the sender unit end just get yourself a multigauge.

Strange I've had similar issues with stock gauges on a gen1 and lived with it, however the one I have now had the 1st generation multi gauge fitted and it stated I had 2lts of fuel when it ran out, so I've removed the sender and modified it to read exactly what's in the tank and it's perfect now, however I will point out I brought another spare sender and a damaged tank to experiment I cut tank in half to see where the sender lies at empty and even when the sender is at empty position there still fuel in the tank due to the shape not a lot but enough.

he did the same with an engine to check oil level too..... :lol

on a serious note, I do recall a thread where you had to calibrate the fuel sender or something like if the bike had been over ?? I really cant recall exactly what the technique was but my gauge aint that accurate so if anyone knows, I would be interested. My gauge reads off the scale ( above full) when brim (  bottom of neck of filler) filled...but maybe has 6 litres when warning light goes on, so its then under reading ... it seems a common issue.

Thanks for the comments all. It's reasuring to know I'm not the only one.

I would however be very interested in how to calibrate the Gauge / Sender  ;)
