Am I being a Numptie

Hi all


Am I imagining it or should the tacho flick to the red line when you first switch the ignition on???


I had a 7K rpm fault show up on Friday (just once), the EXUP is all lubed and checked but I am starting to think I have a duff servo motor. Before I go charging off now that route I would like  a reality check.


The bike actually runs alright but I do get a crackling noise from the servo and it does'nt seem to move  at all when I switch the ignition on.


Or am I just getting old and confused :\ !!?

Hi Timbo,
The tacho shouldn't move when you switch on the ignition. If you do a Search on "crackling noise" the first hit you should get is dated 23 Feb 2016. There's a good explanation and servo test info posted there by Windscreenman.

I need to spend a bit more time on it next weekend but I do think the servo is duff. No reaction at all when the ignition is turned on.

I presume you meant to post your last question under this heading :lol .
Regarding the servo, you only hear it operate when you switch on the ignition after the bikes been running. Then if you switched the ignition off without starting and then on, it wouldn't operate.

Ahh...I did wonder whether I was missing something. Am I right in thinking that the kill switch has a part to play in this too?

I hardly ever use the kill switch but would imagine the same scenario as with the ignition.The servo will "cycle" the first time the ignition is turned on after the engine has been running.I can do a comparison of stopping the engine with the key and then the kill switch tomorrow,but no doubt someone will have the answer for you before then.

If you turn off the engine via the kill switch you hear the servo cycle to it's"home"position.If you turn it off via the key it returns to "home" when the ignition is next turned on.Hope that makes sense.

I'll be home tomorrow, I'll check it out. I think I overlooked the fact that nothing will happen unless I start the engine. I an all other respects it seems to run fine!


I was'nt having a very good weekend.....wound up and not thinking straight!! :rolleyes

I think it's just one of those things that one gives little thought to until the question's asked. Once the servo has "homed", it won't matter how many times you turn the ignition on/off without starting the engine, it won't "home" again until the engine has run.

Switched engine ON :o ! ........and noted that the servo moved! Hooray!

Taken the opportunity tho to grease and lube, cables as well.
