FZS600 Fazer / Re: stainless downpipes
« on: 23 May 2012, 08:51:33 am »
I've now found that mine need doing as well.

I just bought a bike on Saturday, examined everything as per the checklist EXCEPT the exhaust because I heard that "'02 and '03 Fazers have stainless steel exhausts and don't rust"....I discovered to my horror last night that mine has holes everywhere around the collector!  Bollox!

I would give it a go replacing them myself but some of the header nuts look a bit rusty so I'm thinking of buying the pipes and getting a garage to fit them...any North Londoners know of any reputable places?

Would these do as replacements?

On my way back from picking up my first ever bike last weekend I got 4 nods from 4 bikes in the space of 5 miles.  "I'm well in the biker's club!", thinks me.  The next guy who comes towards me I give a nod just to see a motionless head fly past....gutted!!  I almost wanted to do a U-turn and ask why he blanked me.

Never realised there was so much to it.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Oil and filter change

Do you really need the proper wrench tool to get the oil filter off?  I've read you can just hammer a screwdriver through and unscrew it that way.

For installation of the new one I've heard you only need it hand tight anyways...manual says 17Nm but is that "hand tight"

Halfords 5L for £27 seems to get some decent reviews.

Yeah, all very strange.

Countersteering was no problem on my DAS course riding the GS 500, I could go round roundabouts using the pressure of one finger.  Today at times I was really pushing but to no avail, felt like the steering was almost locked in place.

I did notice that when stationary at lights the front wheel also felt extremely heavy to turn against the ground...much, much heavier than I remember from DAS anyway.  Low pressure maybe.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, I'll get the pressures checked and a new back tyre.

Onwards and forwards!

Cheers guys...I've just properly checked the rear tyre now I'm home and can see the top of the rear is pretty much flat.  I had no idea the handling would be so terrible at low speeds, truly scared the pants off me when I was drifting  outwards uncontrollably towards a National Express coach  :eek .

I'll get a new one fitted on Monday methinks.  I need to get a foot pump and pressure gauge as well....oh the joys and expenses of being a bike owner!

The front is pretty good but I've read that things could get unbalanced if 2 different makes of tyres are used together..True-say or bollox?  I don't really want to spend an extra £100 if I don't have to.

Thanks for the comments...Buzz

Evenin' all...

Just rode my new (to me) '03 FZS 600 60 miles home and it was fine on the quick corners, but starting off and trying to get round a small roundabout was a nightmare!!  On every slow turn the bike just wanted to go straight and I'd find myself running stupidly wide, one left exit I almost had to take at a walking pace, just so not to cross into the incoming lane :eek :eek .

The GS 500 on which I passed DAS was as smooth as silk at any speed so I'm not sure what's wrong.  The rear tyre is pretty close to the legal limit and I'm not sure about the front, it look OK though..would this wear cause the steering problems?  Maybe there's just a secret "Fazer" way of riding I'm not aware of.

It's properly freaked me out I have to say, I thought I knew how to steer a bike..I managed to pass the test with flying colours anyway  :D

FZS600 Fazer / Decent waterproof cover for a '03 FZS 600...
« on: 16 May 2012, 09:03:24 am »
Morning, fellow Grease-monkeys!!

My new bike is coming to live with me on Saturday but as there's no cosy garage in which to rest her weary head she'll be shackled to a lamp post outside my flat.  I know from bitter experience with every Ebay cycle cover I've bought in the past 10 years that they disintergrate/split/leak so has anyone got one that's really good?

I can see ones from £20-£100 that all claim to work miracles/make the tea/clean the bike while you sleep but I trust noone on review sites!

Something like this?

Any recommendations from the poor garageless people out there?

Cheers...Buzz

Introduction / New member and a new bike!!
« on: 13 May 2012, 09:48:01 pm »
Greetings all from a forum lurker...

I've been looking for a Fazer since I passed my DAS course a month ago and it looks like the search is finally over.

Just bought a Silver (always the fastest :D ) '03 Fzs 600, Scottoiler, heated grips, Givi top box and rack, tank bag, double bubble screen, Fuel end can, 36k miles on the clock (all from a single owner) for a shade over £1,200 and I couldn't be more excited - and a little nervous :eek .

I feel sorry for my pushbike...she's going to miss the streets of north London!
