Conti Road Attack 3

Fabulous and the best tyre I have used in 20yrs., wet or dry.

I recently ran the Fazer around Thruxton on them and they were awesome. I have them on the Tiger Sport and also my wife's Street Triple.

I will be putting my 2005 metallic red FZS1000 up for sale. I will post photos at some point, its needs a wash first. Posting to see if there is any interest from forum members before I advertise it elsewhere.AIS removed
 • Ivanised
 • R6 shock
 • Delkelvic end can
 • Oxford heated grips
 • Givi top box rack
 • New Pyramid hugger fitted too.
Just had new Conti Road Attack 3 fitted this weekend, brake calipers cleaned and pots greased as I do at every tyre change. Mot until April next year but have no issue at all in putting a new one on for a buyer. Relatively new chain and sprockets at 24k. Exup valve is good and regularly greased. Valve clearances were done at 24k.Used, loved and fettled. 37k miles. Very sad to sell  :'( but I am falling over 3 bikes in the garage, a kayak and fishing gear, so something has to go!

The bike is in Sussex, near Brighton

Hi all,

I need a new hugger, th eexisting one on my 05 has cracked.

I have no idea who the manufacturer of it was. It is mounted with a moulded broad lip that sits on the cross-member of the swinging arm, it has an integral chainguard, which incorporates a mounted point.

Does any one have similiar?

Or a recommended manufacturer?

My two bob's worth and friendly advice only, tell me to piss off if you want.

Keep it ..... join a local RoSPA Advanced group and change your style of riding!

and be VERY well behaved for as long as the points are active.

You'd miss it if it wasn't there and you are just as likely to get nicked in your car in a 30mph limit as you are on a bike. Just re-think how you ride/drive.

Best wishes

MOT special notice 01-21: headlamp conversions - GOV.UK)

I will have to say I disagree ... there are far too many very intense and blinding LED lights on the road now that are actually a hazard to other road users. Its a bad move because it has not been investigated enough, nearly all the LEDs are too biased to the blue end of the spectrum and that is the issue.

Update,

I fitted the adjustable relay and it actually works better than the one supplied with the lamps, which caused the dash repeaters to stay on and dim when the indicators flashed on/off.

The adjustable relay allowed me to trim the flash rate down nearer to the original rate and the dash repeaters now work as original.  :D

Thanks Guys, unfortunately I can't see any model information so I can't use the WP website.
The shock has 3 adjusters, 2 top and 1 bottom which I'm assuming will be low and high rate compression (top) and rebound at the bottom. I'd like to know the recommended base settings for the shock so I can work from there. I think my next option is to call a WP specialist. I fitted a second hand Ohlins to an xr400 and had fantastic support from one of their dealers

Your start point will be in the middle of the range. Thereafter test ride and adjust one at a time. Lots of info on the web, its quite easy to setup yourself

Spoke to Paul, very helpful and ordered over the phone.

Work okay, fitted this evening. Flash rate slightly faster than I am used to but still legal. Roughly 85 -90 flash per minute, I think as standard it was 60fpm.

Being a pendant, I have brought an adjustable flasher relay, from ebay, to see if I can reduce the rate!

Nice and bright now though, but not retina burning like some w*****s out there. Brightest is not always best!

Hi

Can anyone recommend LED replacement lamp bulbs that are a straight swap for the filament type please?

I did ask before I know, old and senile. Any other suggestions gratefully received! ... other than Foxtrot Oscar

They are becoming less common with low miles.

Ensure you get a warranty. 18K is nothing on one of these if it has a service history and it has had regular oil changes. The only other thing to ensure is that the EXUP valve is working and not seized up. You could negotiate them to service it for you and provide photo proof?

Good luck in finding one, I am still sorely tempted to buy another and store it. I LOVE my Fazer, they are a fantastic bike.

My only gripe is the side case options available and the bike did not suit my wife's knees for too long hence I sold my original Fazer. If you are riding solo just stick a bag across the pillion seat and go. I fitted a SW Mototech rack and use a Givi 45 ltr topbox.

FZS1000 here too,

I have had two, regretted selling the first. Luckily later found a nearly as good 2nd.

Take your time , find a minter one and then Ivanise and upgrade the suspenders - I'd recommend either Maxton or Nitron but I found Maxton very approachable and you get a personal service. It will be money well spent.

I have a Tiger Sport as well but I err towards riding the Fazer every time. Simple, straightforward and none of the new-fangled electronic gizzmos that you do not need.

Enjoy! :D

A quick 50mile run out this afternoon for a test.

A definite improvement in throttle response, it picks up nicely from low revs even when in one gear too high. It started more easily too. It just feels that bit sharper/crisper.

A finger in the end-pipe (which I had cleaned) did not seem so sooty as before.

More miles will tell, I will rack up perhaps a thousand more then inspect the plugs and by then the end-pipe will be more evidential. I may even whip the EXUP out again to see what effect there has been there.

I'll keep the post updated.

My second Gen 1 and 14yrs of riding one .... they are a fantastic machine and I still grin every time after a ride out, although my Tiger Sport is comfy (front and rear suspenders upgraded Maxton/Nitron) and I love the triple engine it is just not as surgical in the twisties. The Fazer just goes where I think I want it to be ...  I feel a another Nitron shock coming on too. I wiash I could find a mint, fresh out of the box one to re-live the journey all over again!

A quick update!

I treated myself to a Morgan CarbTune Pro ... and I will have to say that I wish I had brought one before!! Much superior to my electronic one (TwinMax) which only does two pots at a time. Seeing how all four were behaving simultaneously is much easier.

One thing I did note is that the CarbTune supplies very small bore plastic tube that you use as a damper in the rubber hose (located at the manifold end). I tried the CarbTune with and without the dampers and it makes a very big difference to the stability of the reading. In hindsight, I should have done that in times past when using the TwinMax, I am sure it would improve have improved the accuracy when making adjustment. Kicking myself really as the concept is not new to me, having worked in instrumentation for the past 30 odd yrs and at times in automotive engine testing! Doh!  :\

I will next time make a comparative test between the two instruments as I will be able to use the same damped tubing arrangement.

Mike,

I checked the pilot screws, all at 4 & 1/4 turns out. I have now set them 4 turns out.

I set the TPS sensor to read 0.7v, which is mid-range of the stated 0.65 to 0.75v DC in the Haynes manual.

It does seems to sound a bit sharper and responds nicely when I blip the throttle. Test run tomorrow so I will update after that.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I brought the bike 6yrs ago so I suspect you probably did it some time prior to 2014 possibly after 2011/12?

I will check the pilot screw settings.

I'm liberal with the K&N oil but I don't think I flood it any more on this bike than the last or indeed the Tiger but I will bear the point in mind.

I've no ignition advancer fitted (as far as I am aware). I will check the TPS, I've never done so on this one to date.

Otherwise the end-can is the only difference between the two bikes. My original had a Quill T3 can (road legal) and I think it seemed to suit the bike well, it could well be that the Delkelvic does not.

I'll check the setup this week and let you know what I find. Thereafter if all is as it should be I may consider trying a new can; its bonus time of year. I was going to treat the bike to a new rear shock too!

I hope your well too

When was the K&N filter washed out and reoiled last?

It's always clean!

The interesting point is that it is two exhausts on one side of the EXUP valve that are sooty so it suggests a fueling issue on one half of the carb bank rather than a lack of air across all four.

Morning Mike,

I brought this bike from a guy Northampton way, you put me in touch with him via the forum, (you did my original in Worthing, which by the way, I should never have sold, especially for a GS!!!  :'( ) )

Delkelvic exhaust on this one, baffle in. I'm a 3rd, 4th, 5th gear style of  rider keeping it spinning 8-10000rpm when I'm in the twisties. Rarely do motorway long hauls.

I was wondering if the pilot screws need adjusting? K&N air filter fitted. I do tend to think this has been like it since I brought it with 20k on it, its now on 36K miles

Ooh oooooh .... so very nice. I have Nitron on my Tiger Sport.

I am very tempted to do the same for the Fazer ... enjoy. Have you had the forks modified at all.

P.S very clean too ... Royal Navy standard cleaning there! Top man  :D

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Another Carb question!
« on: 21 March 2021, 03:05:23 pm »
Hi all,

Mine is an 05 Ivanised and I have been using it regularly.

I have just done a 36k service and cleaned and stripped the EXUP. I noted that two faces of the EXUP (left half of the engine) were more sooty than the right. My exhaust is also quite sooty too. I have always balanced the carbs so I do not think is it as simple as just a balance. The plugs were not sooty but neither were they that nice grey/brown; more brown. As I did the plugs first, I did not take particular note if two were noteworthy!

I used a infra-red thermometer to measure the exhaust temps but I struggled to get a consistent position to be certain of my results but that also tends to suggest there is a difference in fuelling.

I have always had my suspicions that the bike bike runs a bit a rich and is not as sharp on throttle response as my first Gen 1 after is was Ivanised.

I know for certain my current bike was Ivanised by Mike (Falcon69) - I am hoping he will chip in with a response to this.

Thoughts please ?
