I'm with mickvp. I'd love to experience it just once. But common sense would take over and the lid would go back on!

Fantastic. Lucky it's not in this country, the guy would be done by the health and safety peeps for smoking in the workplace! Never mind not carrying out a risk assessment before picking up the model plane!

Nothing to worry about m8.

Lights (adjustment on headlight same as car, with the meter thng) brakes, but not on a roller. He will jiggle your forks to make sure there is no play, check wheel bearings I assume. He will have a look at your chain and sprocket.

I told a mate that he was looking at something around the rear but I didn't know what..... "He was looking at your chicken line" humph

The guy was dead on, and a biker himself. We had a decent chat while he was dong it, which has never happened on a car test.

Incidentally another m8 failed for his back tyre and back brake. He kinda knew he would, just didn't have time to replace after the NW200 weekend. Claims they were ok before that.... I don't know. The point being that, same as cars, they only look at those parts on the retest.

Dead easy to get a date online quick, so just bung it in and see how it goes.

General / Speed Camera Van
« on: 31 May 2013, 05:42:11 pm »
Yesterday I was going round a roundabout. Real nice one btw, nice camber on the road etc... That's beside the point tho lol.

Anyway, the exit before mine has two lanes but only their outside one has to stop, I have right of way on what becomes the outside lane. 30 limit but traffic always coming up the inside. About 50 or so yards away the speed limit changes to 50.

I'm concentrating on the turn, the traffic on the inside and give the throttle a little tickle. So doing 48 in the 30 zone just before the 50 zone begins.

Then I notice on the opposite pavement a police camera van pointing the other way, but obviously the cam out the back looking my way.

Yes I'm in the wrong, no question. Question is can they, or are they likely to have snapped me as I'm riding away from them?

Never had a ticket before and don't want one now!

Cheers for any replies.

Frank Thomas dri viz here. Not tried any others to compare it with but am very happy with it. Removable lining, vents on chest, upper arms and lower back. Personally I like the hi viz element, tho it is starting to get dirty and fade. I would try to clean it but, hell, it's a motorbike jacket, it's meant to be dirty! The trousers that went with it at the time I bought look silly tho, with a wide hi viz stripe down the outter leg

On the down side the zip tends to get caught on the fabric sometimes, a little care takes care of that

H guys, thanks for all the great tips and advice. Still not sure it will happen, but if it does it will be when the weather turns nice and I have shaken off the winter rustiness from not riding very often.

« on: 26 February 2013, 08:37:15 pm »
Hi, I have never had a pillion passenger, but that may be about to change, and to be quite honest about it I'm quite worried about it.

From even the simplest things like mounting/dismounting, cornering (both at normal road speeds and in slow corners and tight turns and roundabouts), being stopped etc... I guess straight lines won't be a problem tho lol.

Obviously I'll be careful, but am I worrying too much? How is it to ride with a pillion? And do you guys have any hints or tips to help?

Cheers in advance for even the most simple and obvious sounding hints, they will all be appreciated!

General / Lambs... no seriously... lambs
« on: 07 February 2013, 05:47:30 pm »
At this time of year I'm always on the lookout for the first lambs and daffodils of the year. Kind of a reassurance that spring isn't too far away.

Today I saw the first few lambs. No daffodils yet.

Anyone else look for (or have seen) the first signs of spring?

Gotta agree with budgie, just keep riding m8!

I'm not a 365 man but there are plenty of opportunities for winter riding, would hate the thought of being stuck in a cage for half a year eek!

How many on here are summer riders? How many  all year but only on good days? How many hardcore all weather bikers?

I'm pretty much in second category... Seems sensible to me lol

General / Re: REMOVE YOUR HELMET!!!
« on: 03 September 2012, 07:09:50 pm »
Just three little points, don't know how to do the quote thingy but:

I now use one of those unmanned stations. Brilliant, don't even need to get off the bike. Card and PIN, fill up , off you go. Cheaper too  :D

Second about bikers being more likely to be robbers (someone said). I was in a local Dianese supplier a while ago looking for summer gloves. Was in the cage at the time. The guy invited me to take them outside and try them on the handlebars of his bike, see how they feel. He explained that he had never suffered a theft by a biker. School kids getting off the bus outside yes, some others yes, but never a biker. These were £50ish gloves too.

Third: the early post about wearing a balaclava under the helmet. Now, I come from Belfast originally.... That sort of behaviour really causes some upset in these parts! LOL

 :eek :eek :eek

Firstly, congrats on passing your test! I wish you many happy and safe years riding!

Also well done on the ramp thing, have you tried taking it down yet? Shouldn't be a problem I think.

Finally well done on keeping her indoors happy! No mean feat in itself!

Agree with rusty, prob best option is to move the steps closer to the house if you have room. Expensive tho, and as you are intending to move in no way practical sadly

Don't know how to post links, but if you look up "20 idiots on motorcycles" on utube, some of the clips are of people using ramps to TRY to load bikes on trailers.

Not sure I fancy it tbh.

Could you do something like putting a ramp on the steps and store the bike with the front wheel only as far up the steps as to allow the gate to close. Change to a solid wooden gate so ppl can't see your pride and joy, then anchor chain it there?

In my experience it pays to shop around and almost certainly change company every year.

They seem to operate on the basis that if you don't you are a mug and they will try to screw you, rather than the basis of you being a loyal customer and try to give you the best price. Cars too.

When I went to insure my bike for the first time the guy said he was sorry but couldn't give me a price at all.  Then asked if I'd had any online qoutes, which I had. He said that if any had emailed me... Go home and forward the email to him and he wold beat the price, which he did!

Never quite got my head around that one.
