fazer 1000 top speed
« on: 22 February 2012, 05:03:14 pm »

Hi everyone, would appreciate any feedback on what sort of top speed you are getting from a stock 03 model. Mine seems to be struggling over 140, have crept it up to 150 indicated, don't know if i'm expecting too much or it is holding back. Have checked air filter which was quite dirty have blown it out and ordered a new one which i intend to fit before taking it out again. I will see if this makes a difference but in the meantime would appreciate any input...safe riding.

Not taken mine over 140, but i have 2 teeth on the rear so fitted a speedo healer and adjusted it for error as well. i know at 100 reading on the speedo i get 100 on sat nav and on speed gun from police :( (another story :P ) i cant imagin 140 on speedo is far off 140 actual.
the down side is in Mway roadworks i know i am doing 50 but everyone else is trying to do 46 :P

On my first gen1 speedo I once got 178 on the clock. It had around 5% inaccuracy so this was about 160 ish. This was ideal conditions on a dual carriageway with  a light tail wind.
My FZ-1 would not pull any more than 165 indicated on its clock. Take off speedo inaccuracy ...maybe 155 true ?This was down the 2 mile straight at bruntingthorpe on a warm dry day with little wind.A  ivanised gen1 ran very similar top speed on the day.
My second gen1 will do around 155 on the sat nav, 165 indicated . Thats on a german autobahn. The clock has only 5% inaccuracy.( according to sat nav)
TBH once you get to this sort of speed, aerodynamics make so much diffrence....you would need masses more power to get more speed.
If you have 140 on the clock as  a maximum  thats only about 130 true , so it does  sound like the engine is struggling a bit.
My current gen1 has the full monty jet kit( 138 bhp at wheel) and absolutely whizzes right up to 150 without any problem. The last 10 mph take much more effort.
I would strongly recommend you get this kit fitted ....

190 past the local primary school...............on the back wheel

hit the limiter in top in germany last year behind a gsxr1000 with a big lad on it, too busy watching the road to check speedo!!
my old BMW1100S would hit an indicated 150 (144 on the gps, so 142 in reality) with 95hp, so perhaps OP is in need of a service or crecer cajones

Thanks for all your comments ....some more helpful than others but not as entertaining, have just realised my bike has got 6 gears not 5 so perhaps it's alright after all !    No seriously took it out today, hit 145 in 5th  i think conditions play a big part in it and totally agree about the aerodynamics.  Am seriously considering getting it ivanised. At 47  should i still be chasing the rush...I think so, not ready for a pipe and slippers yet.

In all seriousness the big improvement when fitting a full monty ivans kit is the massive jump in mid range power. Its not really doing much for top speed as such. But the midrange boost means top gear acceleration is stunning from as little as 5000 revs, and it pulls very well from 4000. On normal riding it does become a top gear machine. It changes the character of the engine, making it more quick to rev, much more like the original R1 engine. It wont be as demon as that engine cos the fazer flywheel is heavier, but on the dyno, bhp outputs are very similar.  :)

With an ivans slip on, I got an indicated 160 on the fazer.  That was flat on the tank on the, er, M3, earlyish on a sunday.  I got an indicated 172 on a 99 r1 on same stretch of road.  Don't know what the true speed was, but i got an extra thrill out of the deserted road by closing my eyes and seeing how far I could count to on a full throttle in top.  Got up to 6 one time,  one thousand, two thousand,  then I'd open my eyes and see how far I'd deviated off my line :)   That was the ultimate adrenaline rush.  The ptsd insanity was bad in those days.  Wouldnt do it now.  Well, I don't think I'd do it now, as that apparently indicates not caring whether you live or die according to my therapist ha ha ha!!!!!

ps - I haven't tried any top speed antics on the 05 full montyed fazer, but did try for a fast run up to 4th gear.  It started pulling so hard at 6k in third that I hadn't time to look at the speedo, as my stomach muscles got a work out just trying to hold on.   Was very very similar to the way the r1 behaved.

R1 has the better aerodynamics...weight aint that big an issue, its drag which is stopping the topspeed.

Arguably the heavier bike may be more stable if set up right both will produce the required power but not neccessarily the ability or sufficient gears  to use it
