Tool Boxes / Chests
« on: 26 June 2013, 02:12:39 pm »
i'm getting really fed up with having my tools in a right mess in the garage and need to get myself a proper tool chest.
do any of you have the big ones (usually red) on wheels ?
if so, what do you think of them ?
makes, models, prices, comments etc would be appreciated :)
thanks  ;)

I've got a top box and roll cab in the garage. Can't help you on price much as a brought my top box when I was doing my apprenticeship in 1989!!! The roll cab I brought second hand off a friend.
They are idea tool boxes to have, although mine stays static in the garage I've always got the option to pull it out on the drive if i'm working something that requires many tools!
They are loads of choices out there so try and find as many reviews as possible and what ever fits your budget.
Mine are snap-on and I have never had a problem with them. The only issue I find is that over the years I have brought more and more tools and now really could do with a bigger set!

Have a look at the machine mart website. They have a good selection of sizes and prices

I have a couple but they came from work so I can't help on the price. I can't get into either of them as my bike parks in front of them so I usually end struggling to do simple things using a few bits in a bag. I really need to sort things but I've been saying that for years.

Ive got a couple - One snap on, and one halfords "pro" one. quality is not miles apart as you might have thought, but price was way different. I got the halfords one on a deal for about 150 quid (one like this: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_745203_langId_-1_categoryId_255214)

My snap on one is much older, but is a similar size, and i seem to remember it being 3-4 times that price when i got it. quality wise though, for someone who wont be working out of it, the halfords one is MORE than adequate IMO.

I've also got one of the Halford cabinets in the link above.  I bought it approx 10 years ago for half what it costs now & the quality is fine for non-professional use, the draws open & close smoothly & he paint is still solid.  It sits atop a Machine-Mart roll cab with deeper drawers for bigger stuff to live in, I've had that for a similar period & it's also going strong, but I'd say the Halfords Professional stuff is slightly better quality though.

on the Halfords one: if you wait, they will come on offer and you should be able to get them BOTH for around £299 for the top chest & the bottom Cabinet, if your lucky. yes that's cheaper then each part.

I have the Halfords pro range in red. Top section with 4 or 5 drawers, middle section with the same (only bigger) and the big one at the bottom on wheels. I have had it for many years and it cost £250 for the lot (January sale). As yet there has never been a fault or rust spot. Nice quality unit with plenty storage. Ball bearings on the drawers and liners inside them.

Only thing I would say is DO NOT buy a cheap set, you will regret it. My mate has had his Snap-on chest for 35+ years in pro use, every day. He paid £800 back then, and has never regreted it. Mind you, he has it filled with over 40k worth of tools!!!
Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...

snap on style ones on ebay can be relatively cheap as they are usually pick up only, search for nearest and see what turns up, i got a snap on one very cheap as it ended 8 o clock the friday before x-mas and how many people are on e bay at that time.
Nobody is perfect, but being Scottish is a start

I have a machine mart tool chest.
good enough for the price.  Get them when they are doing a VAT free offer.  Draws roll out nicely, locking mechanism is a bit hit and miss, but does the job fo rthe amount I use it.

Bought Machine Mart 5 drawer cabinet together with 9 drawer chest over 5 years ago for £317 inc VAT. Good solid kit with nice drawer movement-as said locking action could be better but as an "amateur" user good enough. Love the fact I can move it around & lock castors in position. Beats my old system of  3 toolboxes hands down! still keep one box for my old skool non-metric tools for the old British stuff!

If you have the wall space, shadow board is the way to go. Tool chests are fine in a workshop where everyone has own tools, but unless you go to the trouble of fitting foam inlays to keep your tools on order they wll still be in a big mess just inside the chest.

Something like this, you can see all your tools, hold tools in place with nails or clips. Bit of MDF or some of the purpose built tool board stuff should have you sorted for much less than £100.
