I have NEVER used headlight deflectors on the bike in the 8-10 times I have taken that across and rarely use them on the car. If you really really really want to abide by all the laws, you can get them from Halfords.

The breathalyser thing is a new french law that comes in 1st July. It needs to be a French one and needs to be unused so you should buy two incase they make you use one by the roadside as without a spare you cannot ride off after blowing negative :thumbup

When in France, as you enter a town or village the village name is in a rectangular sign with a red line around it. This is where the 50kph (30mph) limit starts. The end is when you get the same sing with a line through it. Stick to the 30/50/70kph limits and you shuold be OK. They have cameras out there but tend to be forward facing so nothing to really worry about but the Gendarmes do like hiding in bushes with their hairdryers so keep your eyes open or be prepared to open your wallet as they do on the spot fines there and without paying, you aint moving!

As Locksmith says, keep your original documents on you and keep the bulbs/hi-viz under the seat.

Having just got back from the chateaux of our very own Big Mac I have a little recent experience but it depends where you are going as some countries change the rules slightly.

For France though I have some information. You should take the following with you.

Insurance certificate
V5 document (log book)
Driving licence (both parts)
Headlamps should have deflectors fitted to stop the light "kicking up" to teh left though most never bother
Spare bulb kit
Spare glasses (if you wear them whilst riding)
Breathalyser (from 1st July) - Yes it does say breathalyser but you can buy these on the ferry or in a supermarket when you get there for a couple of Euros apaprently.
Hi-Viz for if you break down on the motorway (needs to be easy to get to)
Lots of cash (or a cash card) to pay the on the spot fines
GB sticker or number plate with teh GB bit on it.

As I understand it you have 28 days from the S172 being issued to name the driver. They have 6 months from the offence to put the case in the court system but actually going to court could be much longer.

S172 offence carries 6 points with it as well as a fine too!

aparrently you can go to court and ask them to do something. Cant remember the exact wording but go to Pepipoo.com and they will tell you. It will force them to wipe the S172 offence and let your misses have a day in court to pleade her case.

« on: 25 May 2012, 10:37:17 am »
There are two seperate offences. One is not having a valid road fund licnece and the other is Failing to display a valid road fund licnece.

The former is the more serious one and ANPR will be happy as "the computer says yes"
The chance of finding a copper these days that will spot you dont have a disc displayed is minute but then if they do stop you, they will check the computer and send you on your way.

So in answer to your question, yes it is illegal but you are unlikely to get done for it.

Oil - look on the right hand side of the engine near the footpeg there is a spyglass. With the bike upright and a warm engine the oil should be halfway up.

Water, look by the back wheel (right hand side) from behind and you should see the rad tank.

As for things to llok out for, they do drink a bit of oil but not as much as the R1's that replced them.

Main problems with them are where they have not been looked after and crashed. Check for duff bearings (head and wheels) knackered sprokets and tyres due to hte power delivery and the ability to lose your licence in just a few seconds.

I had a pre-EXUP FZR1000 that had been tweaked by the club racer who owned it before me. It went like sh!te off a shovel but was feccin heavy on the arms at slow speed and didnt seem to handle anywhere near as well as the FZS600 I replaced it with.

I got rid of it because it was too quick.

Problem is Between Chair And Keyboard :pokefun

If you have the manual open in a browser window, click on the menu "File" and then "Save As". If the manual is open in Adobe Reader, click "Save a Copy".

Breakdown cover is normally just roadside and drag you to the nearest dealer if they cant fix it.

Recovery is a paid extra normally that will take you to a destination of your choice.

5469
Speak to the dealer to get a compatible tyre to the front one.

5470
Probably a squared off rear tyre or in need of some more air.

I have the iPhone 4s. It's ok but I prefer the functionality of an Android. Has the Galaxy S2 before.

You need iTunes to load the music onto the phone but you don't need to buy the music through iTunes.

Having looked into this a bit more, I ended up emailing DVLA to get some clarity. When they deem fit to come back to me I will post the response up here.

For now though, I hope my son manages to pass his bike test before January as it will mean he gets to ride the medium power bikes before he is 19.
As he will get Category A after passing he would be limited to 25kW for 2 years but may get away with the new 35kW limit instead.

25kW = 33hp but no limit on what it is restricted from.
35kW = 47hp limited to 94hp before restricting meaning no Fazer 600 for him yet.

This will open up some more choice on the non-restricted bikes.

Regardless of what we think the right approach is, DVLA have published what will be happening but not made it very clear. All I know is my eldest want to pass his 125 test before January so he can move up to the 33bhp limit at 17. What I dont know is if he will automatically get his unrestricted licence automatically after 2 years or if he will have to take another test.

Many of us (me included) all agree that riders should use their common sense and work their way up to the more powerful stuff but have a look at this....

If you took your test on a 125 in December 2010, you are restircted to 33bhp until December 2012 when you can go out and ride anything. Till then you can only ride up to 33hp (a Fireblade with a restrictor kit is allowed).

If you take your test in Feb 2013 on a 125, you can only ride a 125. You then have to take another test for 35KW (about 40bhp) once you reach 19. You cannot automatically ride it and you cannot ride a restricted fireblade now, you can only restirct a bike with less than 70KW to start with. Once you reach 21 you can take yet another test to go unrestricted.

If you decide not to go for the 125 test (at 17 or 18) or 35KW test (at 19, 20, 21) , you cannot go for the 35KW test until you are 24!
