use velcro - never heard of anyone changing them for anything other than the later FZS600 one which are a similar size but have the rubber bit on the top.

Also, you have a non-standard bolt there holding the peg on - maybe try turning it over so the head of the bolt (which is smaller) is at the top and the nut underneath. This may help your misses het her feet further towards the frame bracket.

I've just sent for a disc workshop manual off e/bay so I'll have a look at the throttle bodies on there and see if I have disturbed something.

There is nothing smart about a "smart" motorway. The smaller brained people who thought it up thought that the general public had even smaller brains than them as their key selling point was "more lanes available reducing congestion and tailbacks".

How many brain cells does it need to calculate that a 5 mile tailback with 3 lanes will obviously be shorter if theres 4 lanes to fill up instead? (just in case you are struggling, it would be 15 miles of traffic between the 3 lanes and still 15 miles of traffic between 4 but only tailing back 3.75 miles instead of 5)

What they failed to remember was that cars and trucks breakdown regularly and are not always able to travel the extra 0.5 or 1 mile needed to get to a refuge. Previously we could pull/roll straight to the hard shoulder. This results in a lane being blocked so down to 3 lanes again. Only needs one breakdown on a stretch of road and you may as well have 3 lanes for the whole stretch.
Once a car/truck has broken down, you then need people to expect a stationary vehicle in lane 1 and take avoiding action quickly now where as before, they were on the hard shoulder and more or less out of harms way but certainly less of a risk to traffic that's still moving and therefore safer for the broken down vehicles occupants.
The hard shoulder was removed as it is cheaper than building a whole new lane. No compulsory purchases, no more embankment work to make the available space bigger, no real money being spent apart form strengthening the surface which the contractors seem to drag out for far too long.
Retrofitting refuges to the existing not-so-smart motorways will bring years of traffic chaos. You would have to shut at least 2 lanes so they could work safely - see the point above about lane reduction

are you after the sensor (the bit with the wire attached) or the rotor that goes in the wheel (plastic bit with lugs on)?

You can get the rotor from Fowlers etc still.

I need a Haynes manual or something similar but they just don't seem to exist anywhere for some reason.

The FZS400 was a bike made for the Japanese market and only imported into english speaking countries in small numbers so people like Haynes wont do a manual as the market isnt there to sell the manuals.

IIRC the main difference under the tank between the 400 and the 600 would be the lack of fuel pump. Carbs out should be a similar job on both bike though.

It has also been  suggested  that the reversing parts of the have test could be dispensed with in an attempt to speed up process of getting new drivers "qualified" to drive these leviathans.

More crap media reporting - It has not been dispensed with, they are effectively creating a CBT element whereby the training school has to sign you off on that before you can take your full test.

They are going up in value and it is in great condition but prices are not that high yet. Hope you find a good home for it.

For clarity - we could definitely do with upgrading what we have currently - we are running low on storage space to the point where we cannot keep backups on line anymore and to download/upload them takes hours. We shouldn't just upgrade the package we have though, someone with more hosting knowledge than me needs to take a good look at the options including how we can migrate the data we have rather than just archive it.

Assuming you mean the 2002/3 FZS600 clocks on an 98/99 FZS600 then yes, as Gnasher says, they will fit (and work) with a change to teh connector plug.
If you mean FZ6 clocks on an FZS600 - no they wont work or fit.

I guess you mean the pipe from the tank to the filter (I used a longer lenght of standard fuel hose to avoid kinks), from the filter to the pump (standard hose will work here) and from the pump to the carbs (standard will work here too).

The biggest issue is kinking the hose when lowering the tank so make sure you dont have any tight bends.

Based on your experiences do you find multibike insurance  worth having?  I can't help thinking after the first year of taking out a multibike policy there is no way of getting an accurate price comparison against individual bike policies.  I'm presuming the NC discount  can't be used independently for both bikes.   

Depends on the policy you have - some accrue NCD on each bike separately. Others give you the same NCD for both.
After the first year its simple enough though to get two quotes for individual bikes.

Coolant foamy and smells when running combined with the running lumpy/cooler on #3&4 I would be looking at the head gasket.
If the coolant wasnt an issue, I would be looking at blocked jets on #3&4

As for the clutch, pop the cover by th eleft foot peg off and see if the rod is in there and not jammed as well as the cable mechanism.

Carbs are the same, all jets sizes are the same.
The main difference is in the float height with the 2000 - 2003 models set to have the fuel level 1mm lower.
The 2002-2003 have a different the pilot screw which is set to 2.5 turns out whereas the 1998 to 2001 are set to 2 turns out.

Have a look at the yamaha workshop manual in the downloads section for the 100% definitive answer but I believe they are identical apart from the main jet size which is so close, it was probably just changed for manufacturing reasons.

All parts in and complete carbs are interchangeable between the fox and box models.
