I'd also doubt very much the tensioner has failed, in what 25 years of the Fazer, I've never seen/worked (I've lost count of how many, 100's over the years) on one that has had a failed tensioner.  This forum is full of post about the very thing.

If you're selling it only because of your chosen machinic telling you the tensioner has failed, ignore him, find someone else going forward and either reset it or rev the thing.

The mechanic who diagnosed it is 20 years in the business. I could have advertised it without mentioning its issue, but I don't want to deceive anyone and potentially put someone in danger, or cost them for work they couldn't have anticipated having to do.

I'll have a go on the PC later to see if I can add photos or a link. Cheers Glenn

Camchain and tensioner will not have failed at that mileage. Probably just needs a good service and a thrash to get the tensioner to move out a notch

As Gnasher said I have never seen a Tensioner fail on these bikes either ever. More like a worn chain. Change you mechainc and get a second opinion before you definitely sell

Hi Glenn, I think you’d be better trying to split up your spares and sell them separately. I doubt you’ll get your desired amount as spares or repair regardless of the problem.

Thank you for the replies chaps.

I have reduced the price to £800 if anyone's interested, especially as the consensus form comments is that there's nothing wrong with it, that's a bargain!

I've been offered £500 from dealership as trade in price, so no biggy if its not wanted here.  I just prefer to think of it being a project, rather than being broken for parts.

Cheers, Glenn

So I'm valuing the bike with a £290 exhaust and brand new Motul 5100 oil at £500, with the Battlax tyres Yamaha oil filter, Haynes and unfitted HEL braided brake lines at £800 total

Reset the tensioner and keep the bike, enjoy the the thing.  Ignore and change your mechanic.

Thanks. He is someone who has been featured in bike mags for builds he has done, so he has a good rep.

He says he thinks someone has been fiddling with the bike, as the chain has stretched due to being overtightened. As far as I understand, he reckons the tensioner has failed, so someone has bodged trying to tighten the camchain, which has stretched it and caused some damage to surrounding components.

He said that without further expensive investigation, it's impossible to tell what damage has been done, so he quoted 12 to 1500 pounds to change the whole camchain system, as he said he didn't want to do a half job.

He also spent his own time off the click looking for a motor to swap if I didn't want to fix this one.

I kinda have to trust him, any mechanical work is done with an element of trust right?  I'm not very good with the spanners, and I told him about all the comments I received here, but he's adamant it's in need of major work.

I asked if I could carry on riding, he said if it gets louder then stop, and don't ride it too aggressively.

Maybe I could look into resetting the tensioner as you say.

It's a lovely bike, with great character, and I appreciate the kindness of you guys replying. Thanks.

£1200 - 1500 for cam change.  This bloke is a con artist, bike mags or not.  Mate I'm a pro bike mechanic it doesn't cost anything like that about half at a push.  As for fiddling with it not really possible, it's an auto tensioner it either works or you reset it and they don't fail as a rule on Fazers.  It's not impossible for them to fail but very unlikely and nothing more than a reset or replacement at worst.  Where are you located?

Thank you Gnasher. I'm in Ipswich, Suffolk.

I really have no idea whats going on at this point!

One mechanic who did my mot last fortnight said it sounds fine. Bloke who did top end service said valve clearance fine, camchain issues.

He sounded genuinely gutted, and said he'd only charge me £120 for the valve clearance and camchain check, rather than £180, because it didn't work out the way we wanted. He said I had been really unlucky and he had never come across this issue before.

The issue you get is, who can and who can't you trust... all you can go on is reputation... regards

@Gmak81, if you dont want the bike thats understandable, but for common senses sake, do not give it away to a dealer for £500. The bike is worth £1500 all day long, every day - https://www.thebikemarket.co.uk/yamaha/fz-fazer/fzs600 (https://www.thebikemarket.co.uk/yamaha/fz-fazer/fzs600)

I can help with posting a for sale post with phoitos etc on here, like I have done for a few people. Someeone will buy it and if they dont then you have ebay.

Did he provide photographic proof of this..?

He did not provide proof of the issues, and when discussing the bike to sell, he said just describe it as having a bustly, or noisey camchain.

I am taking it to another garage for a 2nd opinion, possibly to my local Yamaha dealer. I've only been in there twice but they seem really nice and helpful genuine bikers. Cheers.

Spamming my own thread 😄

I've just had a 2nd opinion. The bloke let me listen to valves and camchain with a screwdriver. He said it's sweet as a nut, nothing wrong with it.

He said he's never had an issue with Fazer valves or camchains.

Therefore I'm withdrawing the bike from sale for the moment.  The issue is I've put a deposit on a GSXS1000F so I now have to work out if I can keep both bikes, sell the Fazer, or back out from buying the GSXS which makes me excited just thinking about it, but in many ways is too nice of a bike for me.

Cheers for all your help, it's been a pleasure interacting with genuine, decent people.

Ride safe, have fun, Glenn

Am I surprised errr Nope  :rolleyes

Whomever this so called "Bike mag" mechanic is I'd name and shame, he's obviously just another rip off artist.  Enjoy the bike and remember just give it some beans (at least 10k) in the lower gears very few weeks, keep the very reliable can chain tensioner sweet ;) :)
