FZS600 Fazer / Re: best mods ? (Hugger/Belly pan/lights ?)

Loving the indicators.  What is the legality of this ?  grey or clear ?

Seems like a cool weekend project.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: A three-quarter mile workout
« on: 05 February 2013, 12:27:17 pm »
I do newB riding, reset the trip on filling and brim it every time (all 2 times I've done it).  I get about 145 miles before the reserve light flicks on, then I go hunting for fuel.

If I get to 145 and the reserve light doesn't come on.....I go hunting anyway.

When I brim it from reserve at 145 miles I get about 13 litres in it.

Moral of the story is to reset your trip, calibrate your distance vs how you ride and pay attention to it :-)

Sorry if this is a sucking eggs moment.  Trying to help.

FZS600 Fazer / best mods ? (Hugger/Belly pan/lights ?)
« on: 05 February 2013, 12:21:43 pm »
Should I keep my Fazer completely standard or are there any major benefits to be had for small injections of cash ?

I was thinking of :

 • a hugger but as far ass I can tell it won't serve much of a practical purpose (as well as not being able to find one cheaply for a W reg FZS600).
 • A Belly pan seemed like an okay idea but will it really achieve much ?
 • lower fairing, again, no real point I can see
 • higher windscreen (this would seem to be good for motorway riding)
cheers

Interesting debate on the camcorders.  There seems to be a universal consensus among reviewers that the gopro's are the mutts mahoonies.  I can see the size, requiring a case, mounts and lack or rotatability being an issue though.  The Drift units do seem like a better choice for most bikers.

As an aside, I'd let most people off for their cruddy driving (they can't help being a muppet).  It's good karma for you and they'll get what they deserve at some point.  Just be glad you're experienced enough to handle it and let it go  :b

Just below the A607 label on your map Big Steve. How would Sunday 23rd of February be for a date to meet up.

Pretty sure 23rd Feb is a Saturday ?  You mean the Sunday 24th ..?

Should be fine with me.

What do you guys use? Recomend? Are the alarm ones any use?  Do you get bigger discounts on them than the non alarm ones with insurance etc
Lots of cheap tat around that I want to avoid but don't want to spend a huge amount either.
... all I'm after is a basic visual and something that will slow down a council scrote with a screwdriver and hammer.
So a fairly good disc lock when parked in public is all I want.

Did you read my post or any of the other peoples posts?  There is some pretty good info in this thread.  The Oxford one I got was purely as a deterrent and is luminous yellow but will get you an insurance discount.  If you want an alarm, it should be attached to the bike an incorporate an immobiliser, most lock alarms can be silenced with a hand rendering them pretty useless.

I ordered it from the bike safe site which is http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/

This is an example youtube video (The video's owner prevents external embedding)

It looks good and I've heard some good reports.

Hi Pitternator.

Definitely interested provided you remember I'm inexperienced and probably slow :-(.

Rode from Harborough to Grantham, to Bingham, then back to Market Harborough via Melton.  The hills and junctions were fun but I need more experience.

I looked at http://www.motocentral.co.uk/ at the weekend, which is in Hinkley which is probably not too far from you.  Clothing only but an interesting place.  I'm considering getting a Caberg Duke helmet as the flip front would be ace for filling up at petrol stations, it's sharp 5*, cheap and comfy as anything.

Let me know when you're thinking of going out :-)

I bought a OXFORD OMEGA DISC LOCK as a visual deterrent.  IT was less than £30.

I'm not all together sure if the better the lock is the more discount you get or not.  I suspect as far as insurance is concerned as long as it's Thatcham certified you'll get a fixed discount, rather than the better the lock the more discount you get.

My Fazer has a Spyball installed on it as an immobilizer and alarm too but I wanted something obvious too.

I think the best angle on this is as follows:

1.) Don't have an expensive/powerful bike.  The more average it is, the less nickable it is
2.) Definitely have an electronic Thatcham alarm and immobiliser
3.) Put a visual deterrent on the bike like a disk lock.  The more substantial it looks the better (the reason I didn't get the cheaper thatcham certified mammoth)
4.) You can use a chain through the frame and a lamp post but it's a lot of weight to carry and it's unsafe in a rucksack.  Too much effort as far ass I'm concerned.
5.) Park in a public place with cameras, preferably in a pedestrianised area with bollards preventing transit/vehicle access.

Hope this helps, just my 2p.

« on: 03 February 2013, 05:16:21 pm »
Thanks all,

Twist of the wrist is brilliant but scary.  I suspect I need more confidence before trying some of the things in there.

I've ordered a copy of Roadcraft off amazon :-) , that was also recommended reading from the bikesafe youtube course too.

I'll give skills for a life a go as well I think, but I want to get a little more confidence first.

I went out on Friday and scared myself witless overtaking a car and then getting fixated on a lamppost on a broad corner.  Twist of the wrist saved me there and I tore my gaze away and focussed on where I wanted to go.  Scary but good learning :-P.

Thanks for all of your help, you've given me a lot to think about.

I've signed up for a bikesafe course.

I'm putting down plenty of miles.  What else can I do to make myself a better, more confident rider ?

I'm thinking of www.i2imca.com

or
camrider do an enhanced rider schemes a 4 hour course is £99 and the full day course, 6-7 hours is £160

Any other suggestions or input appreciated.

Cheers

What's that all about - you cock end" <- did make me laugh :D

I am normally a lot worse :P

Kudos to you for posting your videos, gave me a laugh. A couple of things though :

- Is it wise to post videos where if a future incident occurs they could be used against you (he's clearly an angry driver m'lud)
- Love the camera.  I think I need to get myself one of those
- Made me smile.  Thanks for that.
- I used to be an angry driver but then reality set in.  It only achieves negative things.  Don't let people rile you.  Go out, enjoy yourself and let karma catch up with them.  If you don't believe in karma it's best just to let it drop.

Again, thanks for the post.  It's great thing to make someone smile. :-)

Have just booked in on this course :-)

There are quite a few tense moments for a new rider.  Rain, cross wind, cornering.  So much to learn.  I'm hoping this is going to be the first of many bike courses to help improve the standard of my riding :-)

Hi Chris.

If you have a think about somewhere we can go (a spin near Hinkley ? or we can decide on the day) and where we can meet up (enderby near asda ?) I'd be happy to go for a spin.  I'd follow you if that's okay as I'm a newb.

I'm available Mon-Fri mornings and reasonably flexible at the weekend when given notice.

You can post a suggested time/meet up location and a vague route and we can go from there on here, or you can mail me at simonmcnair at hotmail dot com.

cheers
Simon

Hi all,

I've just bought a W reg gold Fazer 600.  I passed my test a couple of weeks ago so this is my first bike.

I'm looking for meet ups, ride outs or anything that will teach me about bikes, the people that ride them and the community in general.

I'm based in Market Harborough, LE16.  Anyone near here interested ?

Cheers
Simon
