Events, Meets, Ride outs etc / LoFo Ride This Sunday?
« on: 16 April 2015, 06:06:37 pm »
Thinking of heading to the Ace café, then up to High Beach, then up to Finchingfield this Sunday. Weather (so far) looks to be cloudy but dry (if that changes to rain in the meantime, all bets are off!  :lol ). Anyone interested?

Been studying at the Rory Gallagher school of rock guitar and have so far sussed "Bought and Sold", and tonight got a handle on "Country Mile", including his slide in standard tuning method  :) :)

Also started to figure out some of his ragtime stuff for acoustic guitar, but needs more work.

Who needs a job  :lol

General / Recommend Me Some Fiction Authors
« on: 19 March 2015, 09:33:53 pm »
Reading Stephen King's "Dr. Sleep" at the moment. I love his writing style, but have trouble finding other fiction stuff that will hold my attention. Who're your favourites, what genre do they write (horror, sci-fi/fantasy, crime, comedy etc) and what do you like about them? Need to get my head around something different.

What aftermarket (loud) horn have you fitted? I'm particularly interested in those with R1 front fork set-up and how/where you've mounted it? Or if you've got standard forks and have mounted it somewhere completely different? Photos would be much appreciated. Seems my standard one fell off somewhere  :lol

Ta very much!

General / What Guitar?
« on: 19 February 2015, 08:34:54 pm »
Looking for a new electric; is there anything out there that'll give as much versatility and decent tone as a USA Strat? I love Strats and wouldn't go for anything else except that I don't want to spend mega bucks, maybe a max of £500. I think I could get a decent 2nd hand USA Strat for that, but maybe, as I'm really out of touch with what's available these days, I'm missing something? What are Mexican Strats like now, for instance? Maybe there's another brand copy that's good, cheaper than a genuine Fender, worth looking at? Or something entirely different? I'm looking for a good, distinctive tone. I'm definitely not a Gibson man, so Les Pauls and SGs won't cut it. Ideas?

General / Repainting Garage Door
« on: 01 February 2015, 04:00:49 pm »
Bit of a mundane one, but is it ok to use Nitromors on your typical metal, up-and-over garage door? And what's the best way to repaint after? Obviously after cleaning thoroughly it'll need a primer coat before applying paint, but what's the best way - brush ok? I'll source the right outdoor application paint and primer (gloss white finish to replace the ugly old brown colour that comes off with just a wipe with a wet rag now). Don't have any spray guns and don't want to spend that much now, just prepping the house for sale. Cheers Foccers!

This month's issue of Practical Sportsbikes, "Bikes of Your Life", back pages; that's Ogri (Paul) from here isn't it? No mention of his Harley and Triumph, but I'm sure that's him. And no mention of his FZ1!  :eek

The Z1000 is the give-away though. Got to be Ogri. But I thought he was uglier than that  :pokefun :lol

General / 2015 FOC-U Bike Picture Challenge
« on: 18 January 2015, 06:08:07 pm »
Right, here it is for 2015. As mentioned, I'm not going to be scoring this year, so someone needs to pick it up. I suggest dazza sets the first challenge, as he won the last round.

A reiteration of the rules.

1. All challenges must be of YOUR bike and a landmark, or something obscure or creative, something most people can ride to in their area.

2. Picture has to be taken after challenge is made.

3. Challenge is good for a week; if it is not met after that time, the previous picture poster picks a new challenge.

4. Nothing illegal to be challenged.

5. Keep comments to a minimum; if you comment, post the current challenge in bold type after your comment.

6. No repeat challenges.

7. No other bikes can be used, eg, your bike next to a Ducati. Some exceptions will be allowed, eg, your bike next to a bike cop.

8. Only 1 person can win each challenge; any other entrants will not be counted, due to throwing the whole game off track and adding challenges that don't stand.

9. If any dispute about a challenge occurs, 3 oks from others settles the challenge.

Remember, this thread is supposed to get people to want to go ride straight away and beat others to the challenge - be creative, but be sensible about it.

Have fun Foccers!

In this month's Classic M/C Mechanics magazine, some utter nutter has commissioned Stan Stephens to build the most loony-tunes stroker I have ever heard of. Taking one-and-a-half RD500LC engines, he plans to use Yamaha Banshee (racing quad) barrels stroked to 54mm. No powervalves, ported and fully tuned (although to give a bit more in the mid range rather than full-on top end. Looks like power output could be in the region of 200bhp!  :eek

With a move up north to contemplate next year, I don't know that I'll get to do a proper tour next year, although having said that, maybe a short Scotland trip could be on the cards.

Anyone got anything good planned for 2015?

Quiet around here lately, isn't it?

With the demise of the "last to post wins" thread due to mods with megalomania ( :b ), how about a new one? Post whatever you find that's funny, talk a load of bollocks (there ya go Noggy  :pokefun    :lol  ) about anything you like. Try to avoid getting it thrown into the naughty corner though :rolleyes

General / Carlisle
« on: 13 December 2014, 12:41:18 pm »
I'm looking at moving oop north next spring. Can't afford to buy a property outright down here in the south, and want to be nearer to some of my favourite places. So I'm looking at Cumbria. Can't afford the Lake District region itself, and availability of properties at affordable prices and likelihood of future employment options all point to Carlisle at the moment. But I know nothing about the city.

I'll probably rent a flat to start with, so I can get a bit more of a feel for the area myself, and try to gauge if I'm doing the right thing, look at the job situation (only need something like retail, can't do really physical stuff, and don't need a huge wage/salary) etc.

Anyone familiar with Carlisle and the surrounding areas? What can you tell me about living and working there? Any estates/areas to avoid etc? Do you know who the big name estate agents are in the region, both for flat renting and buying a house (have only been looking at Zoopla and Rightmove so far)?

Any help appreciated, ta.

Rolf Harris, Stuart Hall and Jimmy Saville walk into a bar.
The bartender says, "oh no, not Yewtree again!"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The barman asked me "How come I never see you in here with Pete anymore?"

I said "Would you drink with a guy who's a liar, always late, never pays his debts, squirms out of his round and when your back's turned he tries to give your wife one?"

The barman said "Bloody hell, NO!"

I said "Well neither would Pete"

A man with a winking problem is applying for a position as a sales representative for a large firm.

The interviewer looks over his papers and says, "This is phenomenal; you've graduated from the best schools, your recommendations are wonderful, and your experience is unparalleled. Normally, we'd hire you without a second thought. However, a sales representative has a highly visible position and we're afraid that your constant winking will scare off potential customers".

"Hang on," the man says. "All I need to do is take two aspirins, they stop me winking!".

"Really" says the interviewer? "Great! Show me!"

So the applicant reaches into his jacket pocket and begins pulling out all sorts of condoms: red condoms, blue condoms, ribbed condoms, flavoured condoms; finally, at the bottom, he finds a packet of aspirin. He tears it open, swallows the pills, and stops winking.

"Well," said the interviewer, "that's all well and good, but this is a respectable company, and we will not have our employees womanizing all over the country."

"Womanizing? What do you mean? I'm a happily married man!"

"Well then, how do you explain all these condoms?"

"Oh, that," he sighed. "Have you ever walked into a pharmacy, winking, and asked for aspirin?

Bit cold up here this morning, I had to use my discount card to scrape the car windscreen.

It wasn't very good, I only got 20% off.

Your Suggestions and How you can help / Political Threads
« on: 02 December 2014, 11:01:46 am »
Would I be seen as being picky if I suggested that either people preface such threads with "Politics" in the title, or some other way to make it clear that it is for those who like to discuss such matters, or, we have a separate area for this stuff, "Politics, Economics and Current Affairs" or some such? Maybe I am just being petty, but it can be annoying to open a thread thinking it might be interesting, only to find folks ranting and raving at each other on these subjects. I'm not against this stuff being discussed as I know it interests many, just think it ought to have it's own area.

Thoughts? (Takes cover in preparation for vicious verbal abuse  :look )

General / Verging On Buying A Second Bike - What would you have?
« on: 30 November 2014, 11:08:16 am »
The itch is getting very strong now!

So, a lot of bikes out there to choose from; classic Jap, other models of Fazer, new models etc etc. But the one I keep on coming back to is the Street Triple. The Fazer is still the newest thing I have ever ridden, and I'm desperate to try something with more modern handling etc, and the Striple consistently gets great reviews so I think it would be a good start point.

The only problem will be if there's not enough leg room, being 6' 2''. So I've decided that as soon as my leg is better, I'm going to go test ride one. It won't be for long distances, just Sunday fun rides more locally, as I'm not parting with the  :faz, so doesn't have to have touring levels of comfort, so I'm hopeful I'll be ok with the Triumph. I have considered it's big brother, the Speed Triple, but it seems to me the experience is just not the same, although if the Street doesn't work out, I may try one.

I don't think I'd be happy with another classic Jap right now, as it's the modern handling and performance I'm more interested in right now. I wouldn't mind a 600 Fazer as a winter hack, something I'm not worried about getting a bit dirty on days like today when the weather is good but the roads damp/wet and filthy, but this burning desire to try something newer is going to have to be sated sooner or later, so I figure why not sooner  :D

No way I'm going to look at brand new - don't want to suffer the depreciation hit that goes with that. My max budget I reckon is £5k, and will pay for whatever I get outright. And of course, another reason to get something now is to take advantage of winter prices, although it'll probably mean paying for storage for a few months next year. Sod it though, life's for living!

The only other question is, will I get something new (to me) before Noggy does?  :lol
