Is she boiling also off the coolant, or it's dripping onto the underside of the exhaust collector box? You'd probably smeel it before you see the drips. Happened to my first 1000, waterpump seal had been taken out too, as per this thread.

As a compromise, Pipercross also sell reusable air filters the same design as K&N but are around half their price.

Don't see why you couldn't fit different dogbones to get more rear ride height, tho not sure how much shorter you could go. The chap on ebay currently running auction number 223106371299 does various dogbone lengths and from past experience is pretty good.

It's not the OEM unit but instead a 2008-2016 R6 shock, which is shorter than standard so needs shorter dogbones to maintain ride height. Usually a great improvement over the standard shock, too unless you're a stick insect....

Sorry, it's no longer for sale as I plan to fit it to my current bike (a Yamaha, but not a Fazer).

For Sale & Wanted / FZS1000 parts - Screen, bar ends, bungs etc
« on: 22 August 2022, 01:59:45 pm »
Sadly the big ol' girl has finally gone :'( , so I've a few spare parts for sale which have been acquired over the years. Pictures to follow.

Accessories:
  • Memphis shades screen - This excellent screen is designed primarily for cruiser bikes and bolts to the handlebars. There's a long review of these screens on FZS1000 here.    This was the only screen I ever fitted to the Fazer which allowed me to do 300 miles in a day in comfort, with minimal wind noise, buffeting & turbulence. There are a small few marks on the screen, but no deep scratches. As a reference I am about 5'8" tall. £85 plus post.
  • R&G bar ends - silver / black, internal expander type that suits renthal bars, no damage £12 inc post.
  • Oberon Bar ends - no longer made, these rare stainless bar ends are the expander type that suits renthal bars, one small blemish £12 inc post.
  • R&G Crash bungs - There were a used set bought off ebay, both bobbins have wear/ damage. £10 inc post.
Engine & Electronics:

  • Left-hand switchgear - suits earliest 2001 + 2002 models with their front headlight setup, great condition £10 inc post.
More to follow as I plumb the depths of the garage.... [cleaned up post - bkd]

It depends on your riding. For what I do, I wouldn't need all the (expensive) bells and whilstles.
The YSS emulsion shock has a single adjuster which I believe incorporates compression and rebound.
The standard Fzs1000 shock has separate Compression and Rebound adjusters, albeit not very effective.
I'm not sure the £300 YSS would be any better than the standard FZS shock, which incidentally could be rebuilt by any half-decent suspension shop, costing around half the price of the YSS.
The 2008-2016 R6 shock is on another level, about 90% as good as a £800 Nitron R2 shock (a long time ago, I had both shocks so could directly compare). With suitable length dogbones it would cost somewhere around the £150-180 mark, wouldn't be expensive.

Yes, remove the AIS octopus and use compressed air to blow out the recesses where the water pipes go down into head: they like to drop rust & other gunk down in when you lift the cover off.Take your time and plenty of photos to assist memory, Clymer manual and record which shim goes where. Have a decent torque wrench too for those cam caps...

For the fzs1000?  As a budget shock it would work ok but you'd be better off fitting a 2008-2016 R6 rear shock as they have separate high speed compression, low speed compression and rebound adjusters.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Oil pump/water pump chain replacement
« on: 17 May 2022, 05:22:43 pm »
Do you mean the camchain that runs just inside the RHS of the engine (as you sit on the bike?) which uses an automatic camchain tensioner for adjustment?  If so, what sort of mileage is up on the bike - it shouldn't be probematic for a long, long time unless neglected.I replaced mine on my first 1000 when I was changing the cylinder head after a suspect cracked cylinder head was boiling all the coolant away.  It's an endless chain, so the cams will probably have to come off to fit a new one unless you use a split link version ...which is not a good idea

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: BMW S1000RR shock setup
« on: 02 May 2022, 07:11:22 pm »
Standard BMW Sachs spring is about 170mm long and spring rate about 475lbs, which is barely enough for solo riding unless you're a bit of a stick insect.  Cheapest option would probably be to fit the standard spring from a 2006 onwards R6 shock as the spring is 165mm long and the spring rate close to 550lbs, so would cope better with more weight on board.

« on: 31 March 2022, 07:21:03 am »
@kebab19 - Can I ask please?
where did you get your seat done please?
Did you get a bit of height added to it?
What footpegs did you get?
How much did they lower the pegs?
Was it a pita adjusting the height of the rear brake pedal / gear shift lever?
Many thanks.

My OEM seat was altered by:
http://www.cmseats.co.uk/

Second comfiest seat I've had in 30+ years riding.  Kept at standard height but I asked them for the gel inserts and also to increase the height at the very front to stop the 'spud bashing' under hard braking  :lol

Footpegs were off ebay, of Chinese origin but of surprisingly good quality.  I went for the 1 inch / 25mm versions.

Gear shift - very easy to adjust the height, the rear brake was not so good, awkward to change and even then, insufficient height adjustment.  Thought about having some parts made up to fix it, but have learned to live with it  :(

« on: 30 March 2022, 06:21:39 pm »
With the standard cables, you won't get much more than about two inches higher unless you use different bars which  aren't as wide.  I had my four cables extended, re-routed the switchgear cable routing, horn cables and Tracer 700 bars.
https://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?topic=25862.msg308095#msg308095
Raised about 4 inches but high-speed handling is obviously affected.

Crazy money, someone hoping it's now seen as an 'investment oportunity'

They'll go great in a vacuum sealed bubble :rollin

https://www.gumtree.com/p/yamaha-motorbikes/yamaha-fzs-2004-998-cc-/1428859640

It is quite nice, tho - 6000 miles & doesn't seem to have any flaky engine paint. Certainly makes my own 'silver bullet' look like a complete rustbucket: then again, mine was a third of the price

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: 9K rev-counter error Code
« on: 08 March 2022, 06:14:58 pm »
Yes, I was aware that the 9k error code is meant to be the tilt sensor, but on this occasion it wasn't.  Just to say, a search on this site reveals that the 9k error & possible battery cause has been mentioned before:
https://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?topic=16004.msg184022#msg184022
but from a few years ago, so good to keep it in the hivemind's memory  :) This might also save a few people buying tilt sensors in the future...  although it would probably be cheaper than a replacement battery  :(

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 9K rev-counter error Code
« on: 06 March 2022, 07:03:19 pm »
For any future owners who encounter this rarity:

After 3 months of storage, I recently  tried & failed to start bike up.
Battery had been taken off bike & charged up, my Optimate 3 showed the green light so I asssumed all was fine.  Reconnected it to the bike & hit the starter.  Clock lights dimmed a bit, also got some high pitched buzzing from the solenoid but no cranking. I then got the rev counter flicking round to show a 9k error code which is meant to indicate an issue with the tilt switch just behind the battery.Re-charging the battery yet again & lot of fiddling with the solenoid got me nowhere, so in the end I risked replacing the battery to get her up & running again: a decent spin out today & she seems to be running fine now. A strange one, we're all familiar with the 7k exup error code yet there seems to be relatively little about the 9k code.
I think I might remove this new battery & bring it indoors away from the cold next winter, otherwise this could become an expensive habit....

« on: 22 January 2022, 01:33:25 pm »
The 2006-07 2cO version (with separate compression adjusters at the top of the shock) won't fit the FZS1000, but the 2008 onwards 13s version with combined compression adjusters does fit.  That shock looks like the same overall design as the 13s version with combined compression adjusters, it's just the the spring preload mechanism that is different.

« on: 21 January 2022, 03:42:24 pm »
If you bore the shock's top mount out to 12mm, you just need a washer either side of the shock to take up the slack.
Alternatively, you could fit top-hat spacers like the ones shown here: https://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?topic=8167.25      (Post numbers 41 & 45 from 'D. Curzon').  These were however the spacer dimensions for fitting the shock to a Fazer 600.   For the Fazer 1000, the wider part of the spacers should only be 3mm depth instead of 5mm.  Currently running a pair of these on my own bike with R6 shock fitted.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Bmw s1000rr shock question.
« on: 19 January 2022, 04:44:58 pm »
From memory, I think 130mm dogbones bring the R6 shock close to standard rear ride height, 127mm or even 125mm would raise the back-end.  I have the opposite problem - am borderline short-of-leg, so have 135mm dogbones fitted to mine for a very slight drop

22
Prices for them everywhere seem to be creeping up - usual ebay optimism is pushing them up towards £3k unless the bikes have big mileages and corrosion / engine paint shedding have taken hold

SSK piston kit, 9.0 springs, 5w oil, seals and labour £459. Included polishing the stanchions in a lathe.
That's a surprisingly good price, cheaper than I thought!  Is the kit both rebound & compression?Customs mauled me getting the Racetech parts in from the States, so mine worked out only slightly less.

For Sale & Wanted / Re: Wanted Fzs600 Wingrack
« on: 30 November 2021, 08:27:05 pm »
You have a 1998-99 version of the bike? Aluminium only rear pegs?

Sorry, but even more bad news: even if you source a Wingrack with the FZS600-specific fitting kit, it still won't fit the 1998-99 version of the bike unless you also change the rear pillion footrest holders for the later versions (fits bikes from the year 2000 onwards).  Don't ask me how I found that out many years ago  :(

Also, from memory with the panniers fitted there's not a lot of legroom for a pillion, so unless you're touring solo I'd reconsider...
