Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Water leak on gen 1 but from where ?
« on: 06 December 2015, 10:40:59 pm »
Yep, it's a 'tell-tale' hole under the engine, the idea is you know the seal has gone before too much water gets past the seal and contaminates the oil damaging the engine. Happened on my second fazer, I spoke to a friend who is a Yamaha tech and he said not to worry about it to much unless the leak is really bad, I ran my bike for nearly two years before I sorted it although my leak was very slight.
The good news is it's not too big a job to sort, remove exhaust, sump, and you can get access.

For Sale & Wanted / Nitron shock and Maxton forks plus goodies.
« on: 29 October 2015, 09:40:12 am »
Sold my Fazer a couple of weeks ago and have quite a bit of stuff to sell, Nitron sport shock and Maxton converted forks both in excellent condition. They are set up for 16 stone (+/- a stone) in full riding gear, really transforms the handling and can be ridden really aggressively , I've done a few track days and the bike was brilliant. Just a few clicks on the adjusters and the bike can be set up for every day commuting, cost me over a grand for both, looking for £500.
Genuine Yamaha exhaust headers (no exup valve) brand new, never been on a bike £150.
Nose fairing, no cracks or bits missing but there are slight scuffs, £50.
Tail unit, as above £30.
Complete airbox, £20.
I've got loads of other parts I haven't gone through yet, email me if your looking for stuff. I'll go through all the stuff early next week and list it .

Forgot to mention, I use genuine Yamaha pads for the R1. Supposed to be a more aggressive pad compound.

Definitely get your calipers properly cleaned, the brake Pistons should slip back into the calipers with light finger pressure after cleaning. It's a tedious job but well worth doing every couple of years.
I agree the brakes are already more than strong enough if serviced.
I managed to momentarily lock the front in the dry at about 100mph, panic braking to avoid a taxi........I know, entirely my own fault but a very good demonstration of the brakes effectiveness .

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: How to respray valve cover
« on: 11 October 2015, 08:56:58 am »
I just sanded mine by hand and sprayed with rattle cans form Halfords. Ford Starlight silver is a very close match to the original colour. I was worried it wouldn't last due to the heat from the engine but I did mine over 3 years ago and it still looks perfect, makes me wonder what Cr*p Yamaha used in the first place.
I'm.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fazer 1000 gearbox issues...
« on: 05 September 2015, 07:07:49 pm »
This is in my view the one big let down with the fazer, I've had 3 and every one clunks like a bag of spanners. Some are worse than others, my current one sounds the same as yours from what you describe. I've tried everything to sort it with no real luck, just ride the bike and don't worry about it.

I'd check the large block connector behind the left side of the fairing as well, this is a known trouble spot as they seem to collect water and corrode. From what you describe I'm not 100% convinced it's electrical, I'd also check the tank vent is working, when the bike cuts out open the tank cap and listen for the air rushing in and try to restart.

« on: 03 August 2015, 08:56:10 am »
I got a tube of electrical grease (can't remember the name) from Maplins, it is specifically made for outside use such as TV / satellite equipment. I remember reading the bumf at the time that said it has a mild acid ingredient that 'burns' off any corrosion to ensure a good contact. I've used it on every single connector on my bike.

Not really, just take your time and be methodical . Using the small drill can be a worry but really it's pretty easy as is setting the float heights.
Good luck.

This is the main reason I sold my last fazer, I tried everything but could never cure it. I bought another a couple of years ago and it has the smoothest engine of the 3 I've had, unfortunately it has the clunkiest gearbox. It seems that you can get a good one or a not so good one.

What makes you say Maxton fork internals are inferior?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Another seized damping adjuster thread
« on: 11 June 2015, 08:58:09 am »
The whole adjuster can be removed but you'd have to remove the forks to avoid losing all the fork oil. The complete adjuster is loctited in place and it's a very fine pitch thread. Best bet to avoid any damage is to keep trying the penetrating fluid.
Good luck.

The adjuster screws can be released but you'll need patience and a lube of some kind. Place a car jack or blocks under the exhaust, take the front wheel off the bike and rotate the bottom of the forks so that the adjusters face forward. This will allow the lube to run down into the adjuster. I would avoid wd40 as it swells the rubber seals. Use a large screw driver that fits well to avoid damaging the screw heads.
As suggested already you may need to apply heat to the adjuster.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Front sprocket nut question
« on: 13 May 2015, 09:40:28 am »
On my last Fazer I had the sprocket cover off to replace the little gear selector spring, my heart nearly stopped when I noticed a complete absence of any nut or lock washer!
I don't know how long I had been riding it like that, I got another from the local Yammy dealer who said they see quite a few and loctite them as a matter of course.
I thoroughly degreased the new nut and threads on the shaft before applying loctite, so far (touch wood) I've had no repeat of missing nuts.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: R1 / gen1 wheels
« on: 06 May 2015, 09:16:00 pm »
I believe the fronts are identical as is the R6, the rear on the R1 is a bit wider to accommodate the 190 section tyre. It can be made to fit the Fazer with different spacers, not sure if it needs any other work. The R6 rear wheel might fit as its for a 180 section tyre as well, you'd need to check spacers etc though.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Standard Fork settings for 2003 FZS1000
« on: 08 April 2015, 08:38:52 pm »
As Mike says the standard set up is pretty limited in what you can do, i tried lighter oil but found the rebound setting even on max wasn't enough. The only real option is to have them revalved by the likes of Maxton or K-Tech but it'll cost you (£600 ish).

I fitted one over the winter but hadn't had a chance to try it until yesterday, I did just over 200 miles up around Tydrum, Inverary then back down Loch Lomond side. The roll on acceleration is improved, come up behind a car, wait for a gap to overtake then woosh! Quite a bit crisper than before and i remember thinking how smooth the engine is on a cruising throttle.
