Had my 04 gen 1 from new, 53k on the clock and it's never let me down, until this morning that is. I use it for a 65 mile round trip commute in all winds and weathers. Bike lives outside and this morning looked a tad chilly. Ignition lock was frozen, freed that by warming the key up but no response when I hit the starter button, no click, nothing. Clutch is frozen solid too. I'm guessing one of the switches that stop you riding off with the stand down or similar is playing up but working on a bike in these conditions is no fun. Having cuppa and a fag now while I work out what to do next. The joys of winter motorcycling, eh?

Ticking noise is also made by the fuel pump filling the carbs up, especially after being stood for more than a few days.

Try taking it back to bits and stuffing as much grease in there as you can, mine's got play, it's no big deal, passes MOT with just an advisory.

I've been interested in the exup issue since the day I got my thou new 7 years ago (2/11/04). Bike was Ivanised (slip on kit) by Mike(Falcon 269) in June 05 and he kindly serviced the exup for me at the same time. The bike has been used pretty constantly since then and the exup hasn't been touched, just short of 50k miles on the clock now, I've had the 7k error twice since then but only on very cold winter mornings, error disappears after a mile or so. I'd be interested in any comments regarding this. Very few greases will withstand the temperatures of exhaust gases that discolour stainless headers in a short space of time. I know my bike is tatty beyond belief but I fix it when it's broke (almost never) and do all the maintenance that Yamaha say I should.

I've had my Gen1 for 7 years now, original battery died after 2, replacements (cheap as I could get) have lasted 2 years each, the one that's in now is a year old and still fine. I took the alarm (Acumen Cat1) out earlier this year after it refused to disarm. Too early to tell if that was causing the battery's demise but I'll never get another alarm, way more trouble than they are worth IMHO.
