Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Sad time
« on: 27 November 2012, 12:32:55 am »
It's come to the point that having reached 54 years old, I'm getting rid of my beloved Gen 1. It's tatty as hell, battered tank, as it's been a scrote magnet and been hit over while at a standstill a few times. Engine paint affected by salt, split in the seat. 61k miles, engine sound as a pound though. Always serviced by me, don't trust stealers. Decent BT023's, recentish brake pads (Carbon Lorraine A3+). was used day in day out for 66 mile round trip to Bridgend and back until I was on sick for a while. Got a car now and resigned to not having another bike, can't be doing with turning up for work in the winter not being able to feel my hands. It's on a 54 plate, reg'd 2/11/04, mine since then. Would make a great project or winter hack. I'll take 1100 for it and will have a tear in my eye if and when it goes. Located a few miles from Newport in south Wales. One of the triangular plastic bits under the seat is cracked, as is the fairing. Top of the range DID chain fitted with new sprockets I've got a spare tank, on the way to being prepped for spraying the right blue (it's deep purplish blue metallic), it has a Pyramid hugger plus a spare carbon look one, R6 shock mod, still got the original. Ivanised (SO version, fitted by Mike in 2005). AIS has been removed. Renthal bars, clutch lever is a bit of a botch as I keep getting sent the wrong ones, but works OK. I've also got a new genuine Yamaha oil filter to throw in and another screen (has a blue iridium one fitted). I have some decent quality clothing as well but that's not part of any deal. Pics available on request. Oh, MOT'd till April, currently on SORN.

I found those blue ones excellent, back to standard H4's these days due to financial restraints. Even standard lights are far and away the best of any bike I've ever owned.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Tatty thou
« on: 10 August 2012, 12:00:20 am »
Hey fellas and ladies, I've had my Gen 1 thou since Nov 04, new then. Since then it's taken me on a coupla continental trips and never missed a beat. Due to circumstances I've had to rely on it for daily transport so it now has 61 plus thou on the clock, battered tank, dirty, cracked nose fairing, Devilsyam has seen it and and almost cried. But the bits that matter are fine, still pulls like a train, ivanised by Mike in 05, R6 shock.  I'm seriously thinking of selling. I'm 54 tomorrow and don't think I can handle another winter of commuting 300 plus miles a week. It's got a good set of BT023's, recent new front pads ( Carbone Lorraine A3+) serviced regularly by me, ( I do know what I'm doing!) Any idea what I can ask for it? I swear the bike is sound, despite the looks. I'll get some pics on here when I can. Just thought I'd offer you guys an option for a restoration project or just as a winter hack. I won't sell to just anyone, I want the bike to be looked after like I used to be able to afford to. Any comments welcome.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Flaky Ignition Switch
« on: 13 June 2012, 11:16:33 pm »
Thanks guys, it's been playing up for a while but got worse today. It's had copious quantities of WD40 but no joy. It's definitely contact related, motor spins over like a good un but the ignition circuit doesn't energise. I'll try and get by till the weekend then see if I can get it out and have a play with it.

The ignition switch on my 04 thou has come over all flaky, you have to faff around with the key to get it 'just so' so the bike will start. It's usually OK after that but can take a bit of doing to  get it going in the first place. I'm pretty good with electrics and stuff so don't mind having a go at taking it apart to try and sort it. Anyone know if this is a viable option. Doubt very much if I can afford a new one!

I've had the bike since new and the clutch perch definitely hasn't been changed.

Anyone know if they changed the clutch lever? I've bought 2 off ebay for my 54 plate, both wrong. Pivot hole too small and the 'meat' around the pivot around 5mm too thin (as in the thickness of the metal around the pivot, measured flat to flat). Surprised me

Hot weather, oil warmer therefore expanding?

How far did you get after the fuel light started to glow? I can never seem to get more than about 18 litres in mine from what I consider pretty much empty, though my tank is dented and probably holds a litre or so less than it should  :\ . Trip to work is 33 miles and I can do there and back twice and there again (165 miles for the numerically challenged) before I get twitchy and feel I have to refuel. I might just take a few litres in a can in a rucksack and see just how far I can go.

If you hit the pegs when you're doing this then you're doing it wrong, big time.

« on: 28 February 2012, 10:35:18 pm »
I have no bar ends in mine since I had to change the bars to Renthals coz bike got chucked or knocked over by some retard. I've never really noticed a great deal of difference. Bike always vibes a bit anyway, enough to make the mirrors just give a vague impression of what's behind. Carb balance is always done regularly ( got my own Carbtune set of gauges) so it's not that.

Anyone considered putting amber or orange clear film over them? Don't know the way the LED's are finished but it could help someone turn them into indicators. Looks good as they are though, nice one fella!

I have Carbon Lorraine (A3+ I think) on mine and they are fine, having said that though when I had a new front tyre couple of years back the last set fell to bits when the fitter took the front wheel out, delaminating is the word I believe, dread to think what coulda happened if one of the friction bits had fallen out while riding.

Over the last few weeks there've been no more than 5 bikes at work, a Chinese 125, a blade and 3 Fazers, a T plate 600, a 61 plate FZ8 and my 54 1000. Nice work Yamaha!

« on: 22 February 2012, 11:58:02 pm »
It must be an old man's bike, I'm 53 and got one, 54k and rising by 330 miles a week. Bike just eats those miles with never a rattle. Still goes like shit off a shovel, Ivanised with SO kit by Falcon in I think it was 05, R6 shock from Luke, tatty as hell but allows me to earn my beer vouchers every week. Yamaha made a damn good un. anyone know how that woman in Oklahoma is getting on that had around 200k on hers?

Wish I had time to get my Gen1 looking as good as Luke's does! It looks a right mess but still going strong, 54k and counting,

My gen 1 is a bit over 7 years old now and on its 4th battery, they seem to die in around November. The one in the bike now is 15. months old, bike is used daily for a 65 mile round trip commute and kept and outside the battery spins the motor round like a good un every time. Will be interesting to see what happens come this November.

Thanks, I lied about the can, it's oval, approx 380mm circumference. Calling that number gets you a recorded message saying it's been changed to another number, calling the new one results in unobtainable.

I've got a Carbon Can Co round stainless can on my 04 Gen1 and the bracket that holds the can to the footpeg hanger has snapped right at the crease in the 'P' shape. I've found phone number on tinternet for CCC but it's unobtainable. Anyone know if these guys are still trading? Failing that are there other brackets that might fit. Any advice would be, as ever, much appreciated.

« on: 07 February 2012, 11:52:17 pm »
A few 10's of cc's of fuel in the carbs will evaporate quicker than a few litres or gallons in the tank, leaving behind a higher concentration of the gunky green additives that they add. You are of course correct in saying that starting the bike for a brief period without getting everything thoroughly warm isn't that great an idea. Burning petrol produces CO2, harmless for an engine and H2O (water) which isn't, it will sit in the exhaust, may get in the oil, neither of which is good. Start the bike when you're gonna ride it. Just my 2p...

I saw a Hayabusa turned into a quad a few years ago, I bet that would have been a laugh with knobblies for off road use. Not my cuppa t but the engineering looked exemplary. But a pink Fazer trike is just way too gay for my liking. Not that I'm homophobic or anything, each to their own, I just don't wanna see it!

I got given a bike cover the other day, it stinks like my old keep nets I used to have when I used to go fishing a lot. It's in a carrier bag on the back yard at the mo but will check it out properly and give it a hose down on the weekend. Luckily weather is milder now and freezing isn't a problem, just hope it stays that way. Dunno if I can take another winter of 30 plus mile each way commutes  to Bridgend and back. I can't afford a car though unless I sell the Fazer. I'm not ready for that yet, it's a keeper until either I or it pops clogs. Motor still sings like a bird, it's still absurdly quick, even with just the slip on Ivan's kit and a cheap as chips stainless steel round Carbon Can company err... can. My gf loves it too, but she may be an ex gf now, though that's another story. Lottery win required so I can get the bike back to how it was like when new and get a Nissan GTR. I can still dream as a 53 year old stupid mad biker can't I? Anyway, bike has been fine since my first post on this, thanks for the suggestions guys.

After a long time faffing about I realised I needed a hair dryer. Borrowed one from next door neighbour, got the bike near to the front door so extension lead would reach. Blew warm air over the clutch cable, switches, stuff under the  seat, got most of the moisture out and then squirted copious amounts of WD40 everywhere. Bike started easy enough and got me to work and back no problem. Mental note to self... Keep on top of the maintenance!
