On the engine braking thing ---doesn't anyone "blip the throttle while you are changing down when the clutch is in as that adds speed to the engine and reduces the braking a little and makes the whole thing of changing down a lot smother and means somtimes you dont even have to use the brakes
Bliping the throttle is vital to smooth gear changes, and like Nick Crisp have being doing it all my riding career and was one of the things I have always taught beginners, unless of course you have all the MotoGP electronics and seamless boxes. :)
I have met quite a few in recent years who have complained of not being able to down change smoothly and discussing it over a few beers realised they did not blip the throttle and had never even heard of it. The instructors they had did not teach it after trying it they do not understand why the instructors did not teach it. :rolleyes
Doddsie, if blipping the throttle is not making your gear changes smoother it may be that you are over doing it. :)
As you say Midden, emergency braking is different, mostly because you may not have the time to drop down the box.

Just come home from a slippery ride out across the trough of bowland. Not ridden the fz1 for a month, been on the TDM all the time.
This ride did nothing but re kindle and reassure my love for the big fazer. Loved every minute of it!
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Took exhaust off with the intention of wire-brushing the rust off the clamps and painting with something to stop them rusting again (got some exhaust paint from Halfords, but if anyone knows of a better product please let me know...) and found the support bracket just behind the Exup had broken off - will need to get it welded back on. Guess it'll be a few weeks before I get to ride it again, arse!
Someone sent me a postcard picture of the earth. On the back it said, "Wish you were here."

I did 140 miles on the ZX4 today (a tankful, exactly!). First of all - OW!! I wasn't used the the cramped riding position, and by god, unfolding myself off it hurt! Second, my tyres are fucked, the rubber isn't heating up properly, leaving to some "oh fuck!" moments round roundabouts. I swear I lost both front and rear, and got a little drift on one!  :eek  Wasn't even going fast/leaning it much either!

Other than that, it's a great little thing. Top end's not as good as the Fazer, but the fairing gives better wind protection, and ducking down also means you get to enjoy the induction roar...  :lol

Yeah, yeah, I know. Still, I haven't committed the cardinal crime of saying the ZX is better than the FZS - yet! ;)

Is that the best bike you could get hold of with your insurance issue?
And what you paying?

Meanwhile I fitted a gorgeous set of lower fairing panels, and by 'gorgeous' I mean a plastic sign I found in a skip cut up and using metal brackets from the hardware store bolted on to the radiator and crash bungs!

And there I was thinking the Stig bit of your forum name was to do with The Stig from Top Gear. In reality, you appear to be more related to Stig of the Dump!!  :lol  Don't forget to paint tiger stripes on them, then show us a picky  ;)

In terms of price / insurance / availability - yes. I've bought it off a friend for £800, managed to wangle my insurance down to £620. But most importantly, I've got it before my new job/placement starts tomorrow! So it's going to save me quite a bit of rent too.  :) And it's a joy to ride too, so nimble and light. When I get some decent rubber on, it'll be a hoot!

I'm with the others on your fairing - PICS!  :lol

Anyone else remember Bozboz's bike (courier version  :lol ) ?

Embrace the beauty

Not as professional as the cutdown cub fairings I had on the T.Cat but for less than a fiver it'll do me for winter!
