FZS600 Fazer / Re: Whats the reccomended oil / what oil do you use?
« on: 27 December 2012, 09:15:13 pm »
There is no such thing as "Motorcycle oil" - just "oil that is marketed to motorcyclists".

I've never seen any evidence that oil with a picture of a bike on the can is any better for bikes than regular oil.
If anyone has any such evidence ... lets all see it now!  :evil

I use any oil that meets the SL or CF spec and doesn't contain "friction reducing agents".
I change it twice as often as Mr Yamaha suggests (miles)
I don't worry about 'time in engine' as long as its been heated up every month or so to kill the bugs.
(Yes ... Bacteria live in oil! - they prefer cold damp oil.)

Wilko's, Tesco's or Asda's finest 10/40 semi synth is just fine.

Folks : I bring good news !!! .... There is no God! *

Now get used to that fact ....  and get on with your lives!

*Seriously ...
- No God has done anything for the last 15 billion years - the chances of you incurring his wrath in your lifetime are slight.
- No God was necessary to create the illusion of the "big bang". Its a stretchy,"time dilation" thing.
- Study quantum mechanics, relativity and statistics. Then sit down and think about it for a bit.

there is no hard and fast rule with regards to the wear on the valve train.

He's right .... not all of the movement is caused by wear.

Its a huge stack of dissimilar metals (steel and aluminium) that gets repeatedly heated, cooled and vibrated.
Steel and Ally both have a habit of 'creeping'.
Leave them 10 years: its surprising that the engine is still underneath the tank  :rollin .

Tight valves are more of a problem than loose ones...

if they're loose then they close early an open late ... It rattles a bit a looses some performance - no harm done.

if they're tight then they close late (or not at all) ... The result can be burnt valve seats and even 'blowback' through the carbs.

Blowback is highly amusing (and destructive!) and involves smoke and flame emerging from your air-filter  :eek

Yours sound tight ... I'd measure them again... They don't usually go tight, apparently.

« on: 28 October 2012, 06:02:01 pm »
"reluctance to rev" can be a symptom of unbalanced carbs...

Mine, for example, bogs down at about 8Krpm when its carbs go out of balance but can be coaxed through the dead spot.

After balancing it revs freely all the way to 12K...

Big backfire suggests its fuelling properly but not igniting... points to an electrical problem.

That would suggest that there's some vital wire somewhere that is making intermittent contact. That's not unusual on a 10yr old bike.

Some possibles...

+12V or earth to the coils.
The timing lead from the pickup in the engine left casing.
Corrosion in the ignition switch.
The immobiliser plug (or frayed wires to it) under the seat failing to make contact (that was the cause of the same problem for some bloke on here recently)
etc. etc.

Need more evidence: I would get it idling and start waggling some wires to see if you can make it die.

They're now discussing how to turn off DVB (aka "Freeview") and replace it with broadband TV.
After all, why waste all that luverly bandwidth on "Broadcasting" when everyone's got t'internet you can flog the Megahertz to Vodafone?

In 10 years, there will be no TV (in Greek ... Tele=far  In Latin ...  Vision=see)
There will just be "looking into the hole of your choice" and it will be called ...  "Vultis aspicientes in foveam"

Get ready for the great Freeview turn-off.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Disconnecting battery for the winter?
« on: 20 October 2012, 09:49:37 pm »
Batteries (of the classic lead-acid variety) loose about 2 percent of charge per day (1percent if its a new GEL or AGM battery)

They don't like being fully discharged (ie - don't leave it for 3 months)
They REALLY hate having lots of current taken out of them when they're nearly discharged (ie - don't attempt to start the bike with a flat battery).

They also don't like being over-charged.

Problem is ,to treat it properly whether you have it on of off the bike you need either an optimate or similar (and beware imitations) or you need to understand the science of batteries.

Basically:
They DO like being float-charged at 13.8V.
If you let it go above 14.3 volts for more than a few hours it will die slowly.
If you let it drop below 11.8V for more than a few days it will die fast.
If you charge it with more than 1 amp it will die slowly (but that only applies if its nearly fully charged)
If you treat it properly it will last 10 years.

As an example ... My Ford Fiesta battery dates from 1998 and its still good.

Also .. I would have a good look at the water-pump... Haynes says "Check the water pump drain-hole for evidence of leakage" as if it is quite a common problem.
Haynes also says its easy to replace , but I've never done it.

The crud on your radiator cap could well be an emulsion of coolant and dirty oil and it COULD result from a head gasket failure but its worth checking the pump first.

If it helps any ... I have cooked mine until the warning light came on by leaving it idling in the garage for hours by mistake...
10 years later it still works.. :)

What does it say on the "model number"  label under the seat ?
I think there's a sticker on the metal bar that sits behind the battery.

Have a look in here ...

You sure your 'miles' aren't kilometers?  :(
To get 300 miles out of a tank you'd have to lend it to Mother Theresa on a 30MPH mercy dash!

200 - 210 is more normal.

They use to hassle my 93 yr old uncle for not having a TV licence even though he didn't have a TV and could have got a license for free anyway.

They told him that to avoid harassment he should get his free license.
Problem was that having spent the last war inventing new and more efficient ways to kill Germans he wasn't about to play that game.

It was all a big game for him, no sooner had he reached agreement with one 'jobsworth' then a new and
more vicious 'enforcer would appear and ask to search his house for a TV. :'(

He died in 2007 having never had a license.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: headlight mod or hid,s advice please
« on: 19 September 2012, 12:31:37 am »
Converting the H4 (right side) to HID is easy - Got mine direct from China off ebay for £18 a year ago and it was a drop-in fit.
The H1 (left side) is more tricky as you can't use the existing bulb holder and you'll have to make something to hold the HID H1 (I used 15 sheets of PTFE oven-ready-meal tray, cut to size).
HIDs are bloody marvellous BUT they will (should) fail MOT so you'll have to return it to standard once a year.
I have bought 2X HIDs from randomly selected Ebay vendors in China and they have both worked fine.
They REALLY want your positive feedback and offer good customer service.

On the other hand, Osram "nightbreaker" and the similar Philips things are also very good and require zero modification.
Beware this route, there are a zillion forgeries and lookalikes out there - stick to branded products from reputable sources.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: My front brakes are Sh1t
« on: 11 September 2012, 10:23:41 pm »
My brake pads are the original 12 yr old item and they are NOT pish! :)

Brake pads seem to not like being kept damp.

How they work is a 'dark art' : It seems that they contain some soft brass or copper that smears against the Iron of the disc and creates friction when it drags against the 'filler' (which used to be asbestos but is now something that is less likely to kill you 40 years down the line).
The result is a black powder that contains Iron and copper: The black stuff that you keep having to clean off the front wheels on your car.

If they're kept wet, the surface tends to 'grow' (ie the pad gets thicker) and they turn green (if you look at them with a magnifying glass)
and your job is to wear it down below the "reacted layer".

A few 'hard stops' might well solve your problem.

I think you'll find that the "sliding mask" is in fact fixed (looks like its screwed to the locating ring.

Its the HID capsule that waggles up and down.

Aside from the metal shroud (which is intended to change the beam pattern and prevent oncoming drivers looking directly at the HID, I think) that looks exactly the same as the
£18 chinese special that I got off ebay.

I'd hate any of the cheapskates on here to miss the chance to save a few quid  :)

My local Asda (North Swindon) is selling 4 litre cans of 10/40 semi synthetic for £8 on the grounds that it is "Discontinued"
Alongside it is the new identical looking 5 litre can for £18 (I think).

Ticks all the boxes ... SL/CF spec ACEA A3/B3 ...its what's going in mine next but of course, its not for the discerning few who like their oil "reassuringly expensive". :eek

Its probably in all big Asdas: get it while its hot!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Water water everywhere !
« on: 26 August 2012, 11:04:38 pm »
Don't know how big that container is but that could be about 1 litre of water.... If so it might be about the volume of 'unusable fuel' in the tank  which would mean that it could have been builiding up for a while on account of a blocked filler cap drain and suddenly caused problems when it started getting sucked into the fuel filter.

Just a thought ... it may not be 'enemy action'. :\

I ride it on fine summer evenings to country pubs ... I gave up riding in the cold and wet 20 years ago   :o .

Anything below 5C is 'car time'... and modern computer generated weather forecasts mean that "getting wet" is punishment for not
doing your climate simulation properly before you go out.

Use NOAA (kindly funded by the American taxpayer and me!) ... http://ready.arl.noaa.gov/READYcmet.php

You need never get wet again!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: The front sprocket nut and washer saga
« on: 24 August 2012, 09:59:03 pm »
Its worth noting that this nut replacement ONLY needs doing if the OD of the output shaft is less than a certain size (17mm from memory).

You CAN measure this with the nut and sprocket in place: you need a steel ruler and a close-up view and an understanding of the word "parallax".

Mine is a 2000 bike, 10K miles, it has never had its nut replaced, the output shaft is definitely greater than 17mm... (by at least 0.2mm) so I'm leaving it alone.

Probably corroded on by now anyway   :eek .
