has anyone tapped into the blanks on a fazer 600 cylinder head.are they deep enough?is there any chance of drilling into the water jacket or oilways. :) :) only asking as it would be an idea to use them as spare locations for studs.

I guess that's what they are there for. I reckon if you drill no deeper than 18mm in the right direction you shouldn't hit anything....
I've got an old knackered head sat outside. I'll drill into it to find out, if it helps.

Someone mentioned doing this a long time back rather than trying to drill out a broken stud, but I don't know if he ever did it. It certainly looks like it would be o.k. but it would be brilliant if Betty does some exploratory drilling on his scrap head first.

Ok, tomorrow evening I (Brett 'Bretty') will mainly be drilling holes in an old scrap head. Lets see how deep I can drill... :eek

I do it all the time. The main thing is that once the stud has been broken off flush and drilling is the absolute last resort (don't ffs ever consider EZ outs).
File the stud so you are starting with a flat surface if possible. Take a good quality centre punch and punch a divot in the centre of the broken stud, this will stop the drill "wandering" when you start drilling. (top tip, take a paper towel and dip it in grease and put into the exhaust port, the swarf from drilling will stick to it and not drop down the port into the valve seat)
Start small with a 3mm drill and slowly drill into the stud and try to keep it absolutely straight. If you manage to keep it straight when you get to the 5 mm drill bit it will be possible to "wind out" what is left of the old thread of the original stud and then use a bottoming tap to clean up the threads before winding in a new stud.
If you have wandered off centre which happens to everyone, use a cutting tap to cut the new thread, then a bottoming tap to clean it out. (top tip, before use dip the tap in grease which helps lubricate the cut but also picks up all the metal swarf out of the hole). If the thread feels a little on the loose side then take the tap back out and refit with a coating of stud-lock.
If you have mucked the hole up or cannot be bothered to attempt to recover the original thread then an M6 Wire Thread Insert kit is the way to go, which involves drilling an oversized hole and taping it with an M7 thread and then winding in a insert (looks a bit like a spring) which then forms the replacement thread.

i messed up my exhaust studs ( 2 of them ) on my head, and ended up taking it off to the engine shop
they drilled new stud holes in the opposite sides, i think thats what you are talking about?
so now i have a "reversed" exhaust port clamp if that make sense....
is that what you are talking about
they could not salvage the origonal studs as when they drilled one i messed up out the drill bit blew the side of the stud mount out
will get a photo tmrw ( or later today )

What i have..u can see the top left stud mount is blown out and the clamps reversed, not a single issue and its done 4K since that whole shambles, never had an issue with anything

Listen to this man he has been there and done it and has the scars, and after being there with him on this forum ------- we too have the scars--we all have. It keeps me awake at night sometimes, I still wake up in the middle of the night shouting PLUS GAS !
