Give it some revs for a while, or reset it

how much revs are we talking about? and to reset it do you just take out the bike centre nut or the whole thing?

Give loads the red line in the lower gears now thats ONLY if it's not really rattling.  To reset it's in the manual or you can can do the in gear turn the wheel backwards lark, I'd go for the proper reset.

In a related question does anyone know any tricks to manually advance the chain tensioner without removing the carbs?


My 99 model is making a bit of annoying of chain noise. It's not really bad, just a little annoying. I've tried the redline trick but it's doesn't seem to want to click by itself.


Looking at the tensioner it seems that I need to remove the carbs to manually advance?


My bike runs sweetly apart from this noise so removing the carbs seems like overkill.


Before I give up on the idea I thought someone might know a trick that I might be missing?

Couldn't hear anything rattle at 120 so it must be alright, then!

The camchain addjuster is properly in between two adjustment positions.
a old trick was remove sparkplugs (be carefull no debris fall into the cylinder)
put the bike in a lowish gear and push the bike backwards a few meters,this reverses the
tension on the chain moves the slack onto the adjuster side and allows the adjuster
to take up the slack.

What milage is on the bike? I changed the cam chain at 50000 miles it had stretched a full link and a half. (Maybe a few to many track days and spirited rides to the road races.) I used a chain from Wemoto with a split link, took about 7 hours from start to finish and that included changing 4 shims but then I was taking it slow and methodical. Stripping it to get at the chain and putting back together took most of the time. It only took 2 hours to replace the chain and reset the cam timing.
 The cam tensioner is a good design and if the oil is changed regularly is will not give any trouble. If chain is rattling a little it is usually due to chain wear and tensioner cannot take up the slack properly due to tight spots on the chain. Best advice if it is rattling badly is change the chain.
