i know someone who gets snotty when asked to remove his helmet when filling up at "pay at the pump" pumps.

He does the simpple thing - gets back on his bike and rides away.....................leaving the nozzle lying on the garage forecourt. If hes really grumpy, he maybe lifts off the other side pump and lies that down too.

me - i always take the helmet off when paying in shop.

Are we all not getting a little bit over excited about the simple act of removing your helmet? I like to take mine off for a breath of fresh air, if you have hair problems and getting it back in then perhaps it's time for a bit of a trim :) No.3 on top, No. 2  sides and back, taper neck please :P

Never had the problem but I do wear a flip front which I generally flip up when stopped but as Pittt says doesn't take more than a minute or two max to take a bash hat off and on. Look at it from their point of veiw no cctv recognition with a helmet on and they don't know if the bike is on a false plate or even if the bike is robbed or not unfortunately bilking seems an everyday occurance maybe due to high fuel prices.

I blame the Government.  :rollin

I never take my lid off to fill up and would go to another garage if asked. I dont like balancing it on the bike and would never put it on the floor or on the pump as they are contaminated with petrol however clean they may look. I know this as my family used to run a few Esso locations and still have one in the depths of Kent.

Petrol and plastic do not mix and lids fall from bikes. £20 worth of petrol plus £300 for a new lid anyone?

BTW, I have a flip front I normally wear and do open that up to stop any arguments about seeing who i am. Once or twice I have been wearing a balaclava which defeats the object :)

I leave my black visor down and usually respond to the till monkeys request for removal with a brusque 'sod off'!  8)

Actually I don't. I remove my lid if asked, if you imagine yourself in the till persons position you can understand why they want you to do it. We all look menacing enough as it is.

this is Esso's reply
Dear Mr. Wildman

Thank   you   for   your  recent  enquiry  regarding  the  requirement  for
motorcyclists  to  remove their helmets on certain occasions whilst on Esso
forecourts.  We  value our motorcyclist customers and should like to assure
you  that  any  complaint received by Esso is taken extremely seriously and
followed up appropriately.

It  is a legal requirement that our Sales Advisors supervise our forecourts
to  ensure  the  safety and security of our customers and staff onsite.  We
are  also  required  to  check that anyone using a fuel pump is at least 16
years  of  age  - the minimum age for buying fuel.  Consequently, our Sales
Advisors  visually  check  our  customers  before  authorising  the pump to
dispense  fuel.   Whilst  we do not insist as a rule that all motorcyclists
remove  their  helmets  before  dispensing  fuel, we may do so if the Sales
Advisor is unable to see the individual clearly.

In  addition,  in  the  past  there  have been a number of robberies at our
service  stations  where those responsible have worn motorcycle helmets for
the  sole  purpose  of hiding their faces to avoid being identified.  It is
also,  therefore,  our  standard  policy to ask anyone wearing a motorcycle
helmet  to  remove  it before entering our stores. We do this with the best
intention  of trying to ensure the safety and security of our customers and
staff.

I  regret  if  the  request  for  you  to remove your helmet caused you any
offence, and hope that you understand the reasons for our policy.

Yours sincerely,

Anett Furedi

Their reply sounds fair enough to me. Try going to some countries like Belgium where at a lot of stations everyone has to pay in advance, then go back in and get your change if you dont use all the €20 you have given them.

Where a Burka under your helmet next time you go in there. That'll fok em right up.

 :lol
Why under helmet,  ride in to station with one over the helmet, that would cause a dilemma.
I also think the burka/helmet difference is not so much fear of religion but the fact that a baseball bat more effective across the burka than the helmet ;)

He can be, but most of the time he's not that bad... I've had the occasional moment of incredible frustration due to one issue after another, after another etc - most of the time this is in the car though :( On the bike you can usually escape a bit easier...

One of the garages I use is normally full of police where they stop to get a coffee and probably several doughnuts.
I've never removed my lid in there but they do all tend to give me dirty looks.  :lol

Lol that'd be an interesting one :D

Personally, if I get asked to remove my lid I'll just stick the pump back and buy my fuel elsewhere.  I'd have to be on fumes to take it off and should that happen I'll just take my time putting my balaclava back on, then sorting my jacket out, then my lid, then gloves all standing at the counter holding the queue up.

I only ever fill up at morrisons, mainly because it's less than a quarter of a mile from work,
Never once been asked to remove my lid, I did once have a jokey telling off from one of the girls for filling up while sat on the bike but never mentioned the lid, even with the camera on the side not even a second glance.

However, the tesco directly across the road refuse point blank to even turn the pump on, once while a guy from the group was stood inside with no lid on waving a £20 note under their noses!
I wear glasses too and it's just a bit of a ball ache really.
