Just noticed half of the last post didn't "post". Bottom line is Rebz have done a better job servicing my bike than anyone anywhere else ever. I can't say enough good things about them. Phone them to arrange tyre fitting, turn up, drink coffee, be shown around the workshop by a fantastic mechanic with a drag racing/engineering background.

Just wanted to give anyone in the Borders area a heads up about Rebz down at Tweedbank just outside Galashiels. Ian and Brenda will look after you very well. A very personal service. My biggest thumbs is due to to having my Exup valve seen to properly. I've owned this bike for 4 years now. It had a slight Exup rattle when I bought it despite a full service done by the shop I bought it from. Not a big deal, they all do it at some point to a certain extent. Then I had it serviced by the place who ported and skimmed the head and removed the AIS. I also asked them to adjust the Exup valve/cables properly. It still rattled when I got got back. Had a quick go at it myself but snapped a bolt in the Exup cover. I gave it to Ian & Brenda at Rebz and asked them to do a valve clearance check (spot on or within tolerance at 30k) and also check the Exup valve for me. I got the bike back with a drilled and re-tapped Exup cover bolt,(the one I snapped) valve clearances checked (spot on or within tolerance at 30k miles) new coolant (apparently the pH of the old stuff was more or less just water which is surprising considering the place who did the head work would have had to either refill or top up the coolant/antifreeze when the head was off) and a Exup valve making zero noise at all!!!! Ian also did a compression check which was very healthy indeed!

[/size]Guy's, if you live in the area, give them a call, look them up online, whatever. Good for tyres at decent prices, Ian has forgotten more stuff than some of us have ever known and the coffee is good! Plus, it's in the borders area. Great roads everywhere. Make a day trip!

For Sale & Wanted / WANTED R6/R1/FZ6 5 spoke front wheel & 298mm discs
« on: 27 January 2016, 09:12:08 pm »
Looking for a decent front wheel. Must be 5 spoke as fitted to R6/R1 and FZ6 Fazer. (5VY, 5SL & 5VX I think are the model prefix's) Also after 298mm discs to fit them with the 5 stud pattern. Colour not important and a tyre is just a bonus. Pics if possible please

Replying to my own post quickly here. Obviously I meant 5.5 inch rear rim. The front is 3.5 inch. Everybody picked up on that right?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen! % spoke wheel upgrade
« on: 22 January 2016, 10:21:30 pm »
Further to a previous post regarding a upgrade to R1 5 spoke wheels for my Gen 1 1000 I'm now thinking of going down the route of a set of FZ6/R6 wheels for 2 reasons. The rear is a 180 section tyre on a 3.5 rim so it's not a problem for hugger clearance. The front also already has 298mm discs so exactly the same as the Fazer. These FZ6 wheels are the same as the 5SL model R6 which is where I was looking for a front wheel anyway to pick up the discs. The rear disc is still going to be the point where some engineering will be required but the hub from the Fazer should fit with the rear FZ6/R6. Any thoughts?

Dogbones need to be 13cm to return the ride height to standard again.

Also posted in the "for sale/wanted" section.

Looking to get my hands on a pair of R1 5 spoke wheels to upgrade my Gen 1 Thou. 04, 05, 06 onwards I reckon will fit with not too much engineering required. Spacers would be nice also. R6 298mm 5 bolts disc will also help out at the front end. Leaving my options open for a rear disc. Thanks to Luke (DevilsYam) for good advice so far. Any other advice would be appreciated

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted R1 5 Spoke Wheels and also R6 discs
« on: 06 January 2016, 08:48:41 pm »
Trying to upgrade my Gen 1 Thou. Already got the R6 shock and a few other mods, now looking for a wheel upgrade. 5 spoke R1 wheels can be made to fit with minimal fuss so looking for 04, 05, 06 model wheels and preferably with spacers. Also would be nice to have a pair of 298mm R6 discs. I think the 04 model? 5 bolt fitment? Big thanks to Luke (DevilsYam) for a spot of advice. Any other hints and tips on this mod very welcome

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / leaking fork cap o-ring
« on: 04 June 2015, 04:55:55 pm »
Just noticed a dribble of oil around the left fork cap. Seems to be coming from inside the fork itself. Initially I thought I had forgot to wipe up some WD40 but closer inspection leads me to believe the o-ring or rubber seal that lives with the fork cap may have perished. The cap itself is secure enough and the oil isn't coming out at the adjusters. It seeps out through the joint where the cap meets the forks. My forks are pulled up 10mm through the top yoke so the oil is running down the fork top and making it's way along the top yoke like the old Castol GTX advert. However, trying to find a replacement seal is proving a little troublesome. Apparently Yamaha don't sell it? Anyone?

Very good chance I am judging by the horrific chatter coming from mine. Most likely worn bushes. This generally seems to be the case

:(  Pretty much my gut instinct aswell. The noise from my Exup valve (we all know the famous rattle) is driving me nuts. I might just have to invest in replacement parts. Hopefully I'll be able to disect it soon and fingers crossed some new bushes will do

II'm looking to change my original headers to a set of stainless ones from Sandy Bike Spares. Only £250. It means junking the Exup system entirely but I'm sure my bike Guru who skimmed the head and did a bit of porting will be able to do a bit of carb set up to help. Anyone used these headers or indeed any other headers? Decent results?

General / Getting rid of original Gen 1 Fazer 1000 downpipes
« on: 28 April 2015, 07:37:58 pm »
I'm thinking of getting rid of my standard headers/collector and replacing them with a set of stainless ones from Sandy Bike Spares. £250 complete. The noise from my Exup valve is becoming unbearable. It's been serviced and is noisy only due to mileage and age. The original set are also needing regular touch up's with high temperature paint at the collector to keep them looking nice which is a shame coz the downpipes themselves still look fresh. Anyone used these headers from Sandy Bike Spares? I know I'd be junking the whole Exup system but I'm sure the Guru who skimmed my head and did a little porting work for me can help again with a bit of a carb tickle to sort things out.
