ive never tried the bleach trick, but i'm going to,normally i use fine wire wool with t-cut metal polish 1st then polishing tube/cloth with t-cut metal polish on to buff the exhaust up. it normally takes an hour, but it lasts a full season,4000/5000 mile
i buy the stuff from asda, but i'm guessing all supermarkets will have a motoring isle

with saying petrol on your filter,it would have to be a cany leak to get your k&n wet, petrol evaporates so sounds like you've decent leak to me,and it shouldnt be too hard to find i hope

i've gone with bennets this year, moved from mce because got a cheaper quote and mce excess was massive £575/600 ish, with bennets i've getting it down to around £350.
told the lad on the phone that my bike has an after market can and it went up by a whole £8
you can be the most careful rider in world but could be arse ended by somebody who simply didnt see you at the lights junction etc and when the insurance bloke comes to see your bike they're not daft, they know if your bikes modded in anyway and chances are he'll suck through his teeth wash his hands of any malice by saying he's just doing his job.....but your not insured for that aftermarket exhaust etc and so we wont be paying you out.
it pays to be honest imho :angel

my bike did not come with a tool kit,i normally use plumbers box spanners and a plug socket and long reach wibbly wobbly ratchet extension.the type where you can move the extension around when its in the spark plug socket.
i just took the tank off and went about it in the normal way,no moving the radiator or ais system.
yes its tight but do able from above with the tank off
if you dont have the correct tools(wibbly wobbly extension)go get 1 if your a diy er like me.
these are what garages use and i'm sure you'll have the job done in an hour with correct tools
4 hrs from a garage? REALLY!

it is my belief that a dry foam or paper airfilter makes your bike missfire,i went through this problem a few year back, his airbox has been opened up and the bikes taking in too much unregulated air.
cleaning and reoiling the pipercross filter he has will imho make his bike run correct
if i'm wrong please feel free to say i was wrong or even call me names i can take it x

you need to clean and re oil it mate asap,it will make your bike run much better,it might eliminate the other probs you have

its defo piper cross, make sure it doesn't dry out as it could make your bike miss fire, cleaning kits are available for them, less than £20 for a cleaner and an oil,i easily get 4 clean and re-oils out of them, imho better than k&n for cleaning and re oiling its simpler
OH I NEARLY FORGOT TO SAY,DON'T THROW IT AWAY,it doesn't need replacing.

if you have a gas axe(blow torch) use a centre punch while its glowing red to put a dint in the stud that wont budge as central as possible, use this to keep the drill from moving all over when attempting to drill it out, heat it up till it glowing again and try drilling it on a slow speed(so you dont get red hot swarf on you) using a smaller drill bit 3mm say, then reheat until red and go to a 4mm,i think the studs are 5mm,but im not certain
you might get lucky, ive done something similar on a snapped caliper bolt on my bmw that (ahem) was too rusted in to remove and i needed a new part!

its my 1st go with bridgestones. ive got t30 gt on my fazer 1000,got them from tyre leader£176 a pair, done around 3500 miles
including a 4 day trip to the highlands hardly worn i'm really impressed with them.after a 1000 mile they still had some outer nobles on them!
on sports bikes ive had in the past ive seen the rear tyre squared of in around the same milage, sorry dont know why the txt gone tiny ,but i cant put it right on my pc
i do recommend them and will definitely use them again

if its foam, just get the correct cleaning +re-oiling kit for around £15.i had trouble with a pipercross foam filter albeit on a ducati, when they were dry the would cause the bike to miss fire over 70mph,once cleaned and oiled they worked perfectly.in fact i prefer them to k&n filters. just far simpler and do just a good as job

check your exup valves working,(take cover off and move it with your hand)also a dry air filter can cause all sorts of problems if you have an aftermarket one,k+n or pippercross, make sure that they are oiled correctly.another thing it could be is the fuel filter, very easy and cheap to replace.ive learnt over the years to start replacing the servicing parts on a bike before going full technical if any running problems arrise

ive a fazer 1000 gen 1 and its been off the road since October last year,my exup valve had seized up(14/03/2016)took the cover off and moved it by hand and its fine again.
i hope yours is as simple as that.
i cant strip mine down as the bolts holding it in are broken and undrillable too.they need the gas axe,but i cant be arsed.

i bought my bike with that noise on it too, under the tank on the right hand side there are 2 cables that can be adjusted to take up the slack that run down to the exup valve.i hope your lucky like me and it can be sorted without removing it.

this was a tremendous help too the link above it showed me how to cure the rattle
good luck mick

Introduction / newbie

peek-a-boo.
just bought a 2002 fazer....so far so so good, well actually no,got away with adjusting the exup valve cables as it was rattling when i bought it(the exup valve),now it doesnt rattle. got an ever so slight oil leak on the  left side engine cover, tightened the bolts up,but its come back, probably needs a gasket.its got a 44 tooth sprocket on the rear  maybe 16ish front, not counted it,and at 70 mph in 6th its on 4500rpm which is a bit high for my liking.
but hey ive joined a fazer forum so i can get all the answers.
thanks mick  :)
