Good morning all, hope you're all ok.
I was just wondering if anyone knew any more about the 6 month extension to MOTS (as below)? Mine's due May 2nd, so will be extended to November 2nd, but does this mean that when I get my MOT done (e.g. in October) it will run from November 2020 to November 2021, or will it be that no matter when it's done it resets to May 2nd? Not the biggest issue I know, but I can't seem to find any information on this.

Hope that makes sense!

I'd assume the MOT would run for 12 months from the date that the new test is carried out, which must be no later than 6 months after the current MOT's expiry date?.

I'd expect it to be like when the Passport Office was on a strike/go slow. Passports were extended, I think at main Post Offices if I remember correctly. Then you just applied, and got a 10 year when the dispute was resolved. Otherwise you'd be paying full price for possibly a 6 month MOT. Mind you, garage owners would rather have it that way as they'll be seriously losing out, especially those that specialise in MOT's.

It says it's 'an extension of the current MOT by 6 months'. So certainly implies your new MOT, when you get it, would be for a full 12 months.

Thanks guys,
I was reading it both ways and confusing myself, the wording (to me) was slightly ambiguous about whether it was a 6 month extension to the MOT (so current MOT lasts 18 months), or it was allowing extra time to get the MOT done; which, as you say, could then result in a 6 month MOT.
I thought it would probably be the former, so I'm glad you guys agree :thumbup

I can see it taking another 6 months after the extension to get booked into an MOT station.

That was part of my confusion, there's going to be the MOTs that were due in May, as well as the ones that already need to be done in November. So it would sort of make sense for it to just revert to your initial MOT date and you just get it done ASAP rather than waiting until a month before the new date.

Mine was due 7th April all booked etc, I'm just going to get it done asap now.

My local citroen franchise has sent an email saying that they are shut but remain open for MOT service and repairs for key workers and the vulnerable. So if you fit one of these then it seems you can still get your MOT at its normal time. Could actually be handy way of moving your date to something else if your normal one was always at a crap time.
I was under the impression that the MOT system was shut down.

If you're not an essential worker, just declare the bike SORN.

My mate is a mechanic and he's "busier than ever" with MOT's.

OK they don't do bikes, but Kwik Fit are staying open to carry out there normal services, including MOTs.
