2007 FZ1 Flywheel Rotor looking for recommendations
« on: 17 October 2021, 10:21:34 pm »
Hi all, recently got back into the Fazer game with a pretty tidy 2007 FZ1 with 19k on the ODO.
It's a lovely bike, but I must admit I didn't really understand about the potential for rotor failure before I purchased it...

Now fully ready up so I have now followed up
I've checked the history and with the vendor (neither of which could help) and ultimately pulled the cover to find (predictably on this MY) I have got the original rotor not the later one, though it does at least look to be in good condition.
So next step, I don't want to have a potential handgrenade in the motor so I need to replace it and I don't want to pay the ridiculous amount quoted for an original part (I think Fowlups want nearly £800).
I note the recommendation of Motoelectrical above, but was wondering if anyone has any experience with any of the rotors advertised on Amazon;
e.g.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B097GTTCGM/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_9?smid=A17J3QBEVA38J0&psc=1
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09179TFJR/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_8?smid=AED614JO421AM&psc=1
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09HXS9CGK/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_6?smid=A2NZ9VXET6IPK9&psc=1

Any thoughts or advice gratefully accepted

No experience but certainly some thoughts - I am in the same position as you and will not pay the original Yamaha parts price.  I don't doubt that these Chinese parts will work fine as they really are just a lump of metal that spins around with some magnets - As long as they are dimensionally correct and balanced then there is little to go wrong.  I would not try unbranded con rods or valves but the rotor does not worry me.  The parts look pretty good in the picture and I will get to changing it in due course but it has lasted for 32,000 miles and 15 years so I don't expect it to grenade in the very near future.

For roughly the same money you can get the same thing but from a reputable company  - https://www.motoelectrical.co.uk/product/makes/yamaha/motorcycles/fz1/2007/998cc/. They also do upgraded generators and reg/recs.

The issue was thhose 3 amazon listing is there is no feedback at all, so you dont know if the seller/s are trustworthy.

Oh and visually looking at the amazon items, the qaulity of the cast doesn't appear to be of the same quality as the motoelectrical ones.

- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B097GTTCGM?psc=1 - this one on closer inspection does not looks the same as ME one, look at the bottom of the casting
- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09179TFJR?psc=1 - there are defects through out the casting
- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09HXS9CGK?psc=1 - this is just using the same image as the one above it, so same casting issues.

for the extra £40 I would buy the ME one, it also comes with a 1yr warranty that the amazon ones do not. Plus do you really want some unbranded part exploding in your engine..?

That's a really good point actually (i.e. casting quality), that plus the total lack of feedback on any of those items, which was my initial concern.

I was trying to justify why I would buy the RM stator.
It's not the cost other than the fact I get offended by paying 'too much' but I think you are correct; the value is there with the casting quality and warranty.
Also I notice the motoelectrical part is about £40 cheaper than last I looked, and then when I added it to my basket I got another single use 10% code for immediate use, so it is now ordered  :D

Thanks for the input!

Good conversation thread - I think that you are right. The RMSTATOR item does look better than the eBay / Amazon items.  Additionally, the captive shield covering the magnets runs all the way to the back plate same as the OEM upgrade part whereas the cheaper ones stop short.

Chris 50+ - It would be great to get feedback when you get the rotor installed.

I'll let you know, it has been dispatched already.

It might be a week or so, I need a dry day (I have no garage) and I am away next week (school half term).
(I do already have a genuine gasket for when I get to it)

I spotted that also, and forgot to mention it.

Here is a good video guide to replacing the rotor - https://youtu.be/NoQ5ROywKto

Click on the "Additional Options...." link below the text window. I received a replacement generator cover gasket today so will pull the cover on mine to check that it is indeed the original version rotor.

Very noice mista, I have the exact same colour FZ1.

on a different note, Id be wary of those frame mounted frame sliders, hit them the wrong way in a drop and they will snap the frame mount clean off...!

Hey Chris I had the unfortunate task of having to replace mine last year after the original decided to give up its hold of the magnets 🙈 I too used the RMStator one and was perfect.
The only additional thing I would add is keep an ear out for a high pitched whiney noise. I had it develop after around 600 miles and it turned out to be the bearing in the engine case giving in. The weird thing was it sounded and worked fine when spinning the rotor by hand and gave no indication that it was failing at all but once it was removed my mechanic spun it up to full speed using an air gun and it sounded awful
Now I might have been unlucky or it could have been that the new Rotor was a few 1000ths thinner but it needed to be changed out. Was relatively cheap to replace and wasn't causing any issues at the time other than a high pitched whine when the engine was revved (think of a crap sounding turbo whine haha) anyway just something to look out for mate 👍🏻

Thanks for those points.

Re the frame sliders, in my defence it came with them, and one has been scraped... I mostly avoided dropping my previous Fazer so will see how it goes; they might come off.
Previous bike below.

Thanks for the point about the bearings, currently they seem ok so will just do the rotor; but will keep an ear open for that whine.

So this thread inspired me to check my rotor this afternoon and none of the previous several owners have thought to upgrade it......Guess I will need to order one up  :(

Yes I'm afraid that is the problematic one you have there 😔 on the plus side after a relatively small amount of money you should have nothing to ever worry about with the bike again so it's kind of worth it for the peace of mind

...and fitted today.  Fits perfectly but not the same machining quality or smooth casting of the original.  Also noted from the receipt that the RMSTATOR rotor is Chinese.  Regardless, hopefully it will do the job.

Anybody want to buy the original time bomb?
