Just spoke to a fellow who is into vintage cars about this and he thinks you might be able to get a core plug in the Local Engineering machine shop, not sure of the size of the one on the Fazer/R1. Considering how many I have come across (mostly R1s), I never thought of measuring it. Not sure who suggested measuring the hole on the Facebook post as I cannot find the post now. It may be a 1/2" as they are a common enough oil way plug apparently.
For future info : Generally the Fzs1000 is very easy to get  neutral as a stand still, , if you suddenly have problems getting neutral and the clutch drags a bit this is usually the issue, core cap/llug has popped out of the end of the clutch shaft and will normally sit in the clutch basket as it cannot go anywhere.. Since yours was not there it is safe to say the previous owner may have replaced the clutch in a bid to fix the issue and lost the cap. Many Fazer/R1 were sold because of this issue which as I mentioned  in your Faccebook post was probably why yours was sold off relatively cheap.

Thank you for the help. Plug ordered from eBay for the princely sum of £1.96 looking forward to fitting and getting out on the road. So nice to be part of a group of genuinely nice and helpful people.

Hope you kept the clutch plates in order to ensure you put them back in the same way they came out

From the Haynes manual :
First fit the type B friction plate, (which is thicker and has the larger internal diameter) so it fits over the anti-judder spring & seat. Now fit a plain plate, followed by a blue colour coded type A friction plate, then alternate plain and friction plates, fitting the two remaining blue-coded friction plates, then the four black-coded type A friction plates.
Hope that helps.
Btw, Haynes manual is a decent investment. Less than £20 on ebay…..

If OEM plates are fitted, then above is correct, if there is no colour coding then they are pattern plates and you will have to put them back on as they came off.
You can download the service manual in the downloads section along with a few other useful bits.

Buy a core/frost plug in the local motor factors 12mm or 1/2inch as far as I can remember from the last one I did on an R1

Sorry, but please bear with me here!  :'( I’ve looked at this post a couple of times, looked at the Fowler’s exploded view of the clutch parts and still cannot understand what this “centre cap” item is or where it goes. Had bike clutches stripped several times. Not an FZS one I admit!  :o   What is the part number on Fowler’s exploded view? Or is it supplied with shaft, item 20?
