Thanks for the post about heat nivek24.  You are right - they respond well to that.  My mechanic friend Dan managed to get one out that way, the other snapped level with the flange and I've still got to sort it out.  It's not helped because we've a broken off torx stuck down it .  I've bought some HSS-Cobalt drills to try and drill out from here.  Apparently these are very hard ... but brittle.


If things do go wrong, Dan's got a helicoil kit, but I'll wait until I have plenty of time and go steady.  Await further update!   

Well done with the fix.  I've done a similar thing for now.  As the headers are sturdy I've just built everything up after spraying it and even though I'm two nuts short, the joints don't appear to leak.  I did a bit of a test run yesterday (after purchasing an essential bottle of milk) and it will be fine for now until I can get it fixed after lockdown. 


I think the studs on the FZ6 are a bit easier to get at than on the FZS600 from what I remember; they are on shoulders and not directly into the main block of the head.   

My next task is to spray the front of the engine with engine paint. 


I recently changed oil and filter.  Does anyone know, if I take off the oil cooler to clean and spray around it, how much oil I will lose?  Will I need to drain it first or will it just be what's in the cooler, in which case I can top up afterwards?

I soaked them every night for a few days with a penetrating oil with graphite.

Yes  I see what you mean about getting the bolt nearer to the head - would give more immediate torque to the troublesome area.  Only thing is, if it snaps off again its 'Goodnight Vienna'.

I'm going to pay the local Yam dealer a visit tomorrow to see what they do - they must have had a few over the years I would have thought and may either offer a service or advice. 

Another possibility my Mig friend came up with is getting a threaded bar joiner and using that (grinding off the hex part on his lathe) to add some more thread.  The collets on the headers are already corroded but I'm not too bothered about them. They are quite a loose fit anyway and would probably drill out a little if I need to.  I'm aiming for 'tidy' but not mint - I want to ride it!   

I've done the plugs, got the header pipes shining again and the aim is to next strip and re-paint the front of the block and deal with corrosion on the water pipes.

I've now purchased an early FZ6 with 14,500 miles.  I sold my FZS600 a year ago.  I've read all the stuff and I was a bit apprehensive about buying it, but so far I'm pleasantly surprised.  The FZ6 rides well and feels similar in many ways to the FZS600. 


Now going through the process of cleaning, servicing and checking everything.  It's an 'honest' bike which has had basic servicing but needs some TLC.  One thing I hadn't realised and seems very silly is having the battery up top at the front.  The main reason I love the 600s is because they are lighter and change direction much quicker on the road.  I don't like 'top heavy', although to be honest I hadn't felt that.  Found the battery today as I wanted to add my optimiser wires. I also found some corrosion under the tank - surprised Yamaha didn't fully spray it with a good coat under there.  It's only light, spotty bits of rust so for now I've just cleaned it up and added a coat of clear Waxoyl.


Next job will be to try and remove Exhaust header nuts, remove then prepare to get some paint back on the front of the engine.....

Hi.  I originally joined FOCU around 2006 and went on Aberdare and Spring Meets a couple of times plus track days at Llandow.  I kept that well loved FZS600 until a year or so ago, having taken to an FZS1000.  These days I do less riding and more local stuff and the FZS1000 is a bit big for that. 


I've now come across a great condition FZ6 which I pick up tomorrow.  Yes, a 16 year old bike and I'm quite excited about it!  I do go to the Bike Show at Birmingham NEC, but there is nothing newer I really fancy owning.  I've ridden a few things but still love Fazer 600s.  So, I shall be looking forward to looking more on the site.  No big mods planned, but a good service, headlamps and exhaust (less of it!) will be the priorities!  All the best, Clive.

I can't ride a Street Triple or Speed Triple; as well as being naked the riding position is all canted forward - I feel too near the ensuing accident  .


I agree the Tiger 1050 R (or Sport) was a brilliant ride and has a 'Fazer' look about it, but you are looking at a 5 figure price which put me off, along with pricey servicing.  Second hand ones that have done a Winter still rust and corrode.


Just a thought, I took out a Fazer 8.  They didn't get the best press, but I thought it looked good and the engine is an absolute peach.  Suspension was under-damped was my only complaint but perhaps it wasn't set up properly.  Best of all they come at the right money - more like £5K for a mint low miler?

I'm an amateur dabbler and, like you, I've done a few sites in the past.  Your shopping facility is brilliant though - never done that.  Does Wordpress give you the tools to do that too?

I haven't found anything better than my old FZS600 yet which I've kept. 


You could try a Street Triple if you aren't bothered about a fairing and you like riding like you've been tipped forward, or a Bonnerville if you don't need Fazer performance?


.......I did try a Honda CBF1000 which felt a bit like a modern Fazer and was not too heavy (I can still remember your entrance at 'dare when you chucked your Fazer into the courteyard  )

Lots of good advice here.  This has been alluded to, but there will be lots of stuff that has installed itself on startup. 


Go to the Run command and type in 'msconfig' and you will see what is starting and disable what you don't need.  Leave all the Microsoft stuff but get rid of pretty much everything else except the AVG entries.  If you miss anything you can just go back into msconfig and re-enable it.
