Title: FZS/FZ1 (Gen 1) Oil change frequency
Post by: Decoke Dave on 02 March 2019, 06:23:46 pm
Just thought i would ask if anyone knows why the difference in oil change mileages, according to the Haynes manual, between the European models (6,000 miles) and the U.S. models (4,000 miles).  On a Gen 1, 2001-2005, i believe its only a designation difference, the bikes are the same?

Its because 1 American mile is equal to  1.5  UK miles  :)

It's because oil is cheap in the USA and so owners don't mind changing more frequently.  Well, no, actually it's a scheme to ensure that Pep Boys do more business.  Or maybe we just have better oil in Europe ... ;)

My guess, kidding aside, is that it's either to do with product liability/warranty issues in the USA or maybe Europe has better oil.

Or it could simply be a misprint.  6000 miles vs 6000kms.

Early 600s were designated as 4000 miles, later ones 6000. Exactly same engine. Erring on the side of caution I think, until they realised the engine wouldn't blow up. Either that or perhaps the oil just got better?

Probably just trying to get us owners back in more frequently to pay for a service to generate revenue.
As time wore on and people realised there was no need, the intervals were relaxed.

My Gen 1 UK model Fazer 1000 which I bought new in 2001 has a 4000 mile oil change/service schedule, according to the service book which came with the bike. To date its had 40 oil and filter changes.

I change my oil and filter every year or 4000miles which ever comes first. Just changed mine 1200miles busy last year never got chance to ride much. Don't treat the cage the same 10000ml  or every 12 months WHICH EVER COME LAST.

I would love to have the time/and price of the fuel to put enough miles to warrant changing my rear tyre and oil and filter every 12 weeks

No need to envy me, tyres and oil change every 5 to 6 weeks from April to October. My black Gen 1 is my winter bike and is meant to do less miles but with the mild weather, especially February, its now due yet another oil change and rear tyre. Over the winter months I stockpile new discount priced tyres, Avon Storm 3D XM are my favourite for all my bikes, they grip good enough for me and last really well.  Ebay sent me 2 vouchers which got me an extra 20% and 15% off the price of 5 pairs. Now if only I could get a discount on the price of petrol!!!!
