I'm back in the 9-5 grind again, but for the previous 10 years I worked nights and loved it!

In a 13 week period we did 10 weeks of week on - (7 nights working 20:30-07:00 starting on a Monday night)  followed by a week off.  Then 3 consecutive weeks of days, which is when we took holidays & did training, or basically any excuse we could find to stay out of the office during the daytime.

Social life did suffer a bit - I missed out on a good few gigs I'd have liked to have gone too, but that's the price you pay.
Oh yeah, the 50% shift uplift payment was nice too....  :)

the same with the size of chocolate bars! I remember mars bars been at least a 1/3 bigger than they are now! and they were wrapped in paper not plastic!
4 black jack or fruit salads for 1p
other day kids found an old threpenny bit so i then tried to explain bout proper money £ s d!!! even my mrs looked at me blank!

Don't get me started!  I've still not gotten over the great decimalisation rip off!  :'(

For those too young to remember that traumatic period in our history, a shilling used to consist of 12 'old' pennies and there were 20 of them to the pound.  When they decimalised the currency a shilling was in effect 5 new pence and an old penny was made the equivalent of 1/2 a new penny.

So overnight we went from a shilling getting you 12 penny sweets to 5ponly  getting you 10!!   :eek

Did I get a pocket money increase to adjust for this sudden & drastic devaluation of my sweet purchasing 5 bob? No I bloody didn't!  >:

Dunno what sort of mofo batteries that thing is packing, but must be something special seeing as they've deemed it necessary to equip it with wheelie bars!  :eek :)

Daytona Roadstar GTX

Anything else is quite simply less.

Had mine 18 years, still waterproof, not adorned with pointless gimmicks & tacky gee-gaws, but plenty of protection & comfy as a pair of slippers.

18 years? How often do you use them?

I use mine every day and I have to change boots about every 3 years and I wear them to the limit, I went through last winter in my current Sidi's wrapped in gaffer tape to keep the water out, the sole actually came off the left boot today

Don't use them during the summer, but every year since buying them pretty much constantly from whenever it turns cold n wet until it turns warmer & drier again.

For 15 of those 18 years I was also doing a daily 90 mile round trip commute, mostly on motorways/fast A-roads, not much putting my feet down or walking which probably explains why the soles have lasted so long.  Spent the last couple of years working from home so not used that much, but will be getting them out again once facilities sort me out on a parking space in my new job.

Like yourself, despite not buying cheapo boots (I was spending £100-120 a pair back in the mid-nineties) , before I got the Daytonas I never had a pair that lasted me more than 3 years.  The Daytonas cost me £180 at the NEC show in 1995 so I figure despite the 50% higher initial outlay I'd have spent something like £800 over the same period if I'd have stuck to the lesser makes like A-Stars or Sidis.

On top of that, I do still get a sense of pleasure from looking at & putting on a high quality product that was produced by skilled craftsmen in Germany rather than by a 10 year old in a 3rd world sweatshop.   8)

Of course it's a fake, it's been out there for years & was originally an American allegedly complaining to the State Department, hence despite a poor attemp at 'Britifying' it, it still has US only references, like visiting farms & those customs declaration forms you have to fill in when entering the US, but the dead give away is the "my family has been in this country since 1776" bit  :rolleyes

How can anyone can think those bikes are tacky, dogs dinners & in bad taste when there's things like this out there?

Those of a sensitive or aesthetic disposition should look away now!

General / Re: Heated Grips
« on: 13 October 2013, 04:19:07 pm »
My choice for mid winter riding - heated oxford grips, handguard, fleece lined muffs and summer gloves. The handguard keep the muffs off the controls and the muffs keep the rain and windchill off the lot. Ridden 100 miles in sub zero temp and hands felt toasty. I got a heated vest last winter in he sales for keeping my core warm but the I'm too fond to find the cage these days to spend long on the bike in the snow.

What hand guards do you use? I have Oxford muffs and find they press onto the levers at high speed or on particularly windy days. I was looking at ways to prevent this and Hand guards seem a good idea.

I gave up using muffs for the same reason years ago, handguards are better than nothing, but nowhere near as good as muffs for keeping your hands warm & dry.

However, whilst reading your post, I've had a thought that may just work....

General / Re: Pilot road 2 - expensive? I think not
« on: 13 October 2013, 03:32:19 pm »
When I changed my BT023s last time I wanted something different because of road noise in the front. I stumped up £280 for a pair of pilot road twos. I thought I had been had but just worked out I got 18000 miles out of them. I am kind on tyres but that is ridiculous. They were very squared by the end but still grippy and road legal. I've swapped them for Pilot Road 3s at an eye watering £303 fitted but reckon these might be the last tyres the bike will ever have at that rate. Thread pattern is weird and obviously still need riding in but hoping for big things in the wet this winter. Anyone else on them?

£303 a set?  :eek

Next time I suggest you take off your hi-viz vest  before heading to the tyre shop, that way they won't see you coming....  :)

As for PR3s being the same compound as PR2s, can't see how it can be the same, as the PR3s I'm currently running are lasting far far longer than the PR2s I had on it before.

In fact I don't really see the point in not getting PR3s instead of PR2s as not only are they much better in the wet, but  looking at the prices at my local tyre shop - FWR, although they initially cost 11.5% more to buy, they are lasting at least 50% longer, so in reality are working out a lot cheaper.

Personally I'd say not to try & do a complete lap of the island, you'll just be blatting about & will be missing out a lot by doing it in 4 days, you need to head off the beaten track a bit & make plenty of stops to really appreciate the place.

According to your profile you're in Liverpool, so I'd suggest something like getting the ferry to Belfast & following Bitfik's recommendation about heading up the Antrim coast first, then head over into Donegal the following day, it's a pretty deserted & stunningly wild landscape. Then head down through Sligo to Mayo before ending up in Galway via The Connemara Loop, before heading back to Dublin for the ferry back home.

As for when to go, I'd recommend Late April through to mid June, it may be a couple of degrees cooler but it tends to be drier during that time, plus there's not so much tourist traffic about.

Oh yeah, and by staying in the northern half you'll also save a few bob on the trip costs, as you'll not have to hire yourself a translator in Cork....  ;)

I fitted one from a naked gen2 1000,  it's identical other than the mirror mount, so a straight swap.

General / Re: What does this map tell us?
« on: 26 September 2013, 08:33:44 pm »
There are certainly police in Shetland but being a smaller community then they generally know a lot of people so you're more likely to get off with a warning as long as you're not being a complete muppet. However, there is quite a big problem with drink driving up here so I'm surprised there isn't more points because of that.

Chris

Unless things are very different up there, it's quite exceptional to get given points for drinking rather than a ban, so drink driving along with other serious driving offences such as dangerous driving, are unlikely therefore to have much impact on these maps.

First things first, whip the sprocket cover off & check to see if everything's tight & if there's anything obvious that's making the whining noise.  If you're lucky it may just be something simple like  a Mancunian stuck in there....  :)

Aren't Upper & Lower Thames Street both red routes?

If so, then they are not under the City of London's control so they cannot set the limits on them, that's up to Boris & the GLA as they are their responsibility.

Not sure it actually made it into production, but the Morbidelli V8 would take some beating :

Failing that, there's always that Phillipe Starke Aprilia abomination:

General / Re: Leathers
« on: 07 September 2013, 06:23:00 pm »
It would seem HG & RST don't go in for it so much, but loads of clothing companies indulge in 'Vanity sizing'  whereby they increase clothing measurements but retain the same size marking on the label, so for example a pair of 32" waist trousers may now well measure  34" or even 36" in reality.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_sizing

So the bottom line is that  leathers have stayed the same, the clothes shops have been flattering you to keep you happy & now your bubble has been burst you need to stop dodging the salads....  ;)

General / Re: Cheapest Place for Tyres?
« on: 05 September 2013, 09:22:26 pm »
I find by the time I've paid for fitting/ balancing there's very little difference in price buying online and faffing about with transporting wheels and tyres than just going and buying the tyres from the shop!

I've been using FWR in Kennington for years, they do the Michelin PR2 in 110/70 & 160/60 @ £199 inc next day delivery.

http://www.fwr.co.uk/product/55/michelin/Michelin-Pilot-Road-2

As it's only up the road, I normally just take my wheels up in the car, for loose wheels they'll fit the tyres for free & it then costs £8 for balancing, new valve & old tyre disposal.  If I'm feeling lazy then they also do a full ride in/ride out service @ £15 a tyre.

Really?  Sounds dead boring....

If you live, work or study in Lambeth you not only get the £10 off but another £35 off as well!  :)

Who said there's no such thing as a free lunch?  ;)

I think some other London councils may well do it for free as well.

Interesting reading.

However, it's nothing to do with the Thames Valley Road Safety Partnership, or any other 'official' body, it's just something that's been knocked up by a member of Joe Public.

As it's a 600 have you checked the front sprocket?
