Title: Lubing EXUP Cables
Post by: PieEater on 26 June 2013, 10:52:12 am
Have done my clutch and throttle cables and thought it might not be a bad idea to do the EXUP ones, any tips, tricks or advice on the best way to do these?

Get yersel a can of spray 3in1 an wd40. The get an extra long spray adapter prob double the length of the one that comes with it. Undo tank bolt at fromt and lift and hold in position wiv a bitta wood or woteva and the get that spray adapter threaded  through the front left side into the top of the cable runners. U dont need to take the servo out. Start with the 3in1 and give it  a 10 second squirt and then a3/4 second squirt of wd to help work it down while the engine is on so u can rev the bike a little and get the cabble movin to help work it down. Repeat till u can see it start to come out the bottom of the cable. Then do the other one.

That was a top from anuvver foccer but cant rem hoo.

undo bottom of cables at the exup, undo the adjusters by the carbs. fill up the exup side and let gravity do the business, use a cable oiler to lube the servo side.
reattach cables, ADJUST cables and relax!

"Get yersel a can of spray 3in1 an wd40"

I would be wary of that advise !

I was told that the cables (OE ones) have a teflon coating which wd40 and three in one type oils strip of causing the cables to stiffen and cease prematurlly .

might be total Bo77ocks but is it worth the risk ?

I use white spray grease in a plastic bag a couple of elastic bands and then move the cable back and forth for a while , although I havent done this for a long time , maybe a bit over due ?

Kind of wandering if I should leave well enough alone?

From what I've come to understand WD40 doesn't have much to recommend it as a lubricant it's main purpose in life is to displace water (WD = Water Displacement) and it doesn't appear to have any active lubricating ingredients unlike the sprays which contain PTFE and / or Silicone, so you've probably achieved very little by flooding your cables with it.

U only use the wd to help get the 3in1 down the cable but ifu just wacked wd in ur cables will be ok but not lubed properly is all.

No problems,  I'll do them again soon with a nice can of silicone I found at work

Halfords sell a Bikehut oil thats got Teflon in it.  Using a syringe with the hypo needle you can inject it directly into each cable at the servo.  Needs a couple of goes & some just floods back but as soon as you put enough in past the highest point, gravity is on your side & it siphons down in a day or so, even quicker with heat from the engine.  Did the same with the clutch cable, really works well.

Meant to add, I used a blunt needle normally for printer ink cartridge filling, they are really cheap on ebay, does the throttle & choke cables also but it's the clutch cable that you will really feel the difference.

Nice one Capt, a real easy way to lune the cables. I have a cable oiler, one of those things you clamp on the cable and stick the tube from the spay into it, never sure if how much actually squirts in.
