General / Joining NSL roads
« on: 01 November 2015, 08:46:43 pm »
Hi,

My commute involves Joining the A52 from fairly slow speed slip roads. I sometimes have to join at Spondon where there are also cars trying to get off it at the same place which can be a problem. With the bike I can get up to speed fairly quickly if I have to and can normally get into the outside lane if I really want to. I'm just concerned as the other day someone got a bit worried as they didn't seem aware of how quickly I could pick up the speed. Is it more polite to not do that or is it safer to get into the outside lane where there's less bunching and less chance of being mistaken for a gap?

I did once get a mini driver who seemed to have decided she was in a fast car and could follow me despite the gap being much smaller for her.

FZS600 Fazer / Indicators to work with a wingrack
« on: 19 August 2015, 02:15:39 pm »
I had a side stand mishap last week and my fazer went over, thankfully I have the mini crash bars fitted so damage was just the wingrack indicator. I don't know if it can be glued back togeather and if not was wondering if I could fit something in the original place so that they don't stick out. They are a tight fit with the current cover.

The other damage is the trim to the Givi 46V

I don't know if I could just add something to support some reflective tape and replace that (which is quite handy). If not the trim is about £20

General / Protective gear materials
« on: 25 February 2015, 10:03:34 pm »
At the risk of being an outcast I will admit that I'm just about vegan, I have knowing made one purchase that breaks this - motorbike gloves. I decided that my safety came first.

Asking other vegans if there is a specific reason why there is such a  lack of textile gloves tends to be a bit pointless. When summer comes I'll be on the look out for summer gloves so the whole fun will start again. All this had resulting in me having a few questions from your collective experience.

1. Does leather still work better (at least on the road) then textile gear (when new)?
2. How do they compare after a few years use?
3. Would "normal" people be put off by non leather gloves? I'm not sure that this is an issue as I didn't find a shortage or Loric/microfibre boots (I got some TCX ones which I'm happy with)

In addition I was wondering if anyone has come across gloves coming off during a crash. Besides the very cheap or motorcross gloves I have since found a few textile gloves that look interesting. Rukka appear to make a winter glove

I also came across a company called Motoport that makes these

They look a bit home made (and expensive after import costs)

General / Reflecting on a near miss
« on: 08 July 2014, 07:55:53 pm »
Having received some great moral support with a claim while stationary last November (which admittedly is still outstanding) I thought I may get some advice after a near miss last week. I don't think I did anything wrong but am trying to figure out if I may have missed warning signs that could have made avoiding a crash easier.

I entered a round about to go straight on (2nd exit) and then a lorry failed to give way. The round about has a significant amount of cobbled area that most vans and lorries clip  when going round. I used this to avoid the crash.

The weather was good as was the visibility at the junction so it can only be that the driver failed to look or looked but didn't see. I tend to struggle to tell when drivers are going to do that rather then come to a stop. I to favour a quick beep if in doubt (and when I see cars looking to emerge from a junction with a line of traffic going the other way) but in this case I thought it had stopped.

Any little nuggets of wisdom that you've noticed? I've noticed since passing my test and getting on the Fazer rather then the 125 I do at least seem to respond more decisively then in the past where I've seen a danger and then not knowing if steering away is better then just braking. I'm now glad for that part of the Mod1 test.

FZS600 Fazer / Anyone had a lowered bike?
« on: 05 May 2014, 06:13:08 pm »
Between not being tall and having dodgy joints getting on the fazer is sometimes quite a challange. I can get on it ok on flat ground but when slopes are involved I start to struggle. Given my knees I would also don't fancy reducing the distance to the pegs, if anything increasing this would be best (this is only an issue on longer rides).

I'm fairly light and won't be carrying a pillion so I don't think the back end being softer is much of a concern. I'd like to take it camping so may have kit on the back.

How much lower can you safely get away with?
Will lowering it make it easier to get upright on a slope? (this is sometimes tricky with a full tank plus tankbag and topbox). I was wondering if it being slightly lower would give me more leverage.

I saw this thread

but thought if I lowered the seat my knees might not thank me, lowering the whole bike would also lower the panniers if I got a pair.

General / advice on crash responsibility
« on: 30 January 2014, 05:20:24 pm »
Hi,

I had a bump on my last bike in November.
I was filtering past stationary traffic using the other lane as it was empty, a car pulled out of a side road.
I came to a stop but this has been disputed by the car driver. It's bent the front disc on my bike and an unspecified amount of damage to the car (who was turning right)

The insurance company was going to settle  against me using Powell Vs Moody

They have refused to consider the Davis Vs Schogrin on the grounds that the situation is different though they did accept Leesen Vs Bevis and have now agreed to settle 50/50

There are no witnesses to use so I can't prove I cam to a full stop. I did point out that the trend in the case law was more in the riders favor the the previous case law and while she agreed that was the trend she said the specific circumstances are different.

The damage to my bike is minor (2nd hand parts for an SR125 are cheap) but I understand this will affect premiums in future for both bikes and cars (I'm hoping to pass my car test soon).

Has anyone used Davis Vs Schogrin for an incident at a junction?

For Sale & Wanted / FOUND blue grab bar FZS600
« on: 27 January 2014, 02:09:49 pm »
I'm looking a grab bar as someone has agreed to sell me a wingrack if I can replace the bar. The bike's a 2003 model and the colour looks a bit different to my 01 bike.
Rear indicators may also be handy.

EDIT: I have now bought one, thanks

FZS600 Fazer / What Racks do people have?
« on: 26 January 2014, 07:57:36 pm »
I'd like to add at least a top box and possibly panniers to my bike. My old 125 has a rentec rack and a givi monolock case. It's only rated to 3kg though so was planning to go for something a bit stronger.

I doubt I'll be able to get a wingrack unless someone has a source for making a fitting kit but it seems easy enough to get the Givi top box kit. Other then Rentec rack & my current box is there anything I should look at?

Introduction / Just passed and bought a FZS600
« on: 24 November 2013, 05:54:01 pm »
Hi,

I passed my big bike test earlier this month so after 4 years pottering around on a 125 I've bought something with a bit more poke. I did my test on a 650 bandit but felt better on the fazer with the test ride. It's a 2001 model but it looks to be in good condition.

I'll be on the lookout for hard luggage to add to this (currently I have a monolock box but would like to get a monokey set up)
