Nice one, glad to be of service. I made a thinner bit to go next to the bar end out of aluminium and cut off the thick plastic bit, then rivetted the two together.

Cheers for the replies folks, will look at eBay etc as soon as the bones have knitted back together, as 700 notes is a bit steep.

Seems odd that they refused to do it even when you asked. I did mine last year following an MOT advisory for the rears. I did the fronts rears and swingarm ones too (the swingarm was off to fit a new chain) it is not a difficult job, as I did not have a puller I used a brass drift to knock to old ones out, bit of a pain but all three done in a morning, used the old ones to get the new ones in, had no probs with MOT this year. If you can borrow a puller the job is a pretty easy DIY one..........

Hi,
I had the original bars with variobar risers, I had to get longer brake lines but the cables were ok.
After an accident last year I fitted renthal bars, medium road I think they are and I had to remove the bar risers as the cables were far too tight. You maybe lucky, but if the bike still has the original brake lines, it may well be worth getting longer/braided ones anyway? If you say you are a member of the FOC then HEL give you a decent discount, I think I got nearly 25%.

Plus 1 for the exup, mine stuck opens few years back and the bike was not exactly gutless but noticeably slower than before until over 5000rpm or so.
It's easy to check: take the cover off (carefully incase the bolts are rusted in.....) Turn ign on pulley should rotate to its initial position, then fire up bike, pulley should rotate as you rev bike. Normally fully open by 7k.
Loads of exup info on Pat's site (cartestsoftware)

Cheers

No no longer have the handguards as had an accident last week that ripped them off. They were about £50 from Suzuki but you maybe able to get pattern ones elsewhere??

Nice review and welcome to the fold.

I have had mine since new in 2004, and up to say 6 years ago had no probs with neck and shoulders etc but now I suffer a lot, i put it down to getting old and less flexible/fit!
I Have a dB screen and also a higher one for longer trips, both are fairly noisy opinion here is divided some say use a short one and let your helmet do the work. I fitted dl650 handguards and Oxford grips but now have heated gloves... Never had a prob with the legs but I don't have long legs, that said I cobbled together some highway pegs for long trips just to vary knee position.

Keeping at say half revs, 90ish you can easily get 180-200 from a full tank, even giving it some 170 is no problem.
If it doesn't have one already a multigauge is a nice option/toy.

Enjoy the bike :-)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 1 fuel tank
« on: 30 April 2017, 10:11:49 am »
Hi all,

Following an accidental last Sunday i am i need of a new fuel tank, the original having a big dent in it. Is the tank specific to the 1000 or was it used on other models too? Hoping to get one from a scrappy/breakers so as many options as poss would be good. Also the plate that holds the footrest and gear lever has split in two, can this be welded or must it be replaced. If so same qn as for the tank...

I take it new tanks are going to be bloody expensive, any ideas how much??

Cheers

Why not just support the swingarm, remove the bolt and regrease it then replace. That's what i have done for the past 13 years no worries so far........

Same as anything else, it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

« on: 22 March 2017, 07:16:23 pm »
Thanks for the replies folks, i would agree get the best paint and do it right, if the bike was a minter, but it is a 13 year old machine used all year round stored outside as i have no garden or garage. So whilst it is mechanically in excellent condition the plastics are showing their age plus the cowling has suffered impact damage that i have had to fix with fibre glass. It goes against the grain to say that it is never going to look like it did before no matter how much time and effort i put into the fairing but that is the reality. At which point you might say well any ok silver will do then but i still want it to be a fairly close match.........

If the bike was worth anything for say px i would just buy a new cowling from Yamaha as they arrive painted, but even before the accident i was only offered £1500 against a £10k Honda machine and the local Yamaha people were not even interested at all, i quote "razer 1000s are obsolete and no one wants them any more" that was the yam dealer!!

I suppose i will just do the primer and wait till i visit the uk to get a near match, cheers anyway!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Renthal medium bars 755s or other sizes.
« on: 20 March 2017, 02:42:08 pm »
Are the 755 the ones that are reasonably close to the originals in terms of reach etc? If so I fitted them to mine after mine got bent. I had the originals fitted with variobars bar lifters, because I needed to have the bars higher and closer to me (I get very painful shoulders after an hour or so) and longer hel brake lines but when I tried to fit the renthals the cables were far too tight so I had to take the variobars off. Using the original bar fittings and the renthals the cables are fine. I have not done a long ride since fitting them but am about too........

It may well be an option for those who live in or near a large city but in the depths of rural country I am afraid it is not an option. Unfortunately I Have not seen many tractors in silver round here, shame as there are more tractor dealers than car or bike ones!
Cheers for the reply though!

« on: 19 March 2017, 11:44:14 am »
Hi folks,
Recovering after hitting a tree and breaking my collar bone. Bike ok but needs the fairing/cowling sticking back together and then painting. Spoke to Yamaha and they don't sell the paint, silver tech 3 or S3 they said it was. Anyone know if there is a car paint that is a close match to that. Over here in France getting car paint is hard enough let alone bike paint. (I know rs paints do an exact match but that's £50 and the bike is 13 years old so the rest of the paint will be faded compared to the new paint.....)

Here's hoping, thanks

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 1 Headlights, how many on dip?
« on: 14 July 2015, 08:29:35 pm »
Have a closer look at the lights, I just did on mine and the left hand light (clutch side) has two arrows one above the E13 marking and one to the side of it both pointing to the left But the right hand (throttle side) has the two arrows pointing in different directions one to the left and one to the right. I used a decent torch to see the markings.

As the shape of the lights is different I don't see that one of arrows tells the fitter which way to install them so why have two arrows in opposing directions????

Here are, as promised, the markings on the headlights....

02HC/RPL
02A  E13 (in a circle) 125
9914
STANLEY P1772

Each light has an arrow pointing left or right but the writing seems to be the same on each, I may have confused some of the letters etc as left my glasses at work!!

I agree with pieeater you can ask for a second opinion, it depends on how well you get on with the test centre as they can all say it was in the opinion of the tester as a catch all excuse.

Will have a look at the lights tomorrow, Harness.

As to the MOT question, I used to have a 205 GTi with a big bore exhaust, passed its MOTs at the same place for three years then one year failed due to excess noise, I told the new guy it had passed before he said nothing but opened his MOT manual to a page which simply said "in the opinion of the examiner...." so we don't really have much chance do we!!

Had my 2004 gen 1 from new and both lamps are on when on dipped beam. No problem so far with MOTs but next one is in august! I have always thought my beam just goes up and down rather than up and right ( and therefore down and left ) but maybe my eyesight is crap or I am always too close to the wall I am using? Never really use full beam on the road as not out much at proper night time on unlit roads.

If the fan kicks in when it is needed is when the temp is a but high then leave it like that, I am sure that overcooling a motor is not good for it, but willing to stand, or actually sit with a beer, corrected!

If the charcoal filter is the same or similar to the one on my car it is designed to absorb the fumes from the top of the fuel tank, rather than vent them into the atmosphere, then when you start the car the filter is purged by a valve allowing the 'stored' fumes to be burnt somehow. I have not traced all the pipework, but it probably goes into the air filter housing.

Can't see how this affects the engine power???

Maybe someone on the US site may have a better idea?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Chain adjuster snapped!
« on: 05 July 2015, 09:25:01 am »
Well I finally managed to drill out the old bolt and retap an 8mm thread so now I have replaced the bolt and applied lots of nice copper grease so hopefully it will not  seize up and snap again.

Surely a company like Yamaha could afford to grease bolts when assembling their bikes??

It was a bit of a pig to drill out as the drills need to be much longer than normal, not easy to find in small diameters.

Now just got to get the rear wheel aligned, any bright ideas on how to do this on your own, outside??
