New to Fazers (and pretty much new to Yamahas)
« on: 27 December 2014, 01:41:26 pm »
Greetings all, I've had Bandits and a GSXR Slingshot previously as well as an American import XJ750 in the dim and distant past.

I'm about to buy an '05 600 Fazer and will be looking to upgrade it and generally keep it on road myself.

I think I'm reasonably competent and have a wide selection of hammers so I'll be fine, right???

The bike I will be buying needs tyres and probably a clutch + an oil change so has anyone got any fixes/upgrades/choices for what I should fit??

Also, any special tools that would be useful?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to contributing to this forum
Just think how stupid the "average" person is.  Isn't it a worry that statistically approximately 50% of the population are thicker!

Oh yeah, I forgot, anyone tell me any Fazer quirks that I need to look out for when looking this bike over?

An 05, so It's either the last of the foxeye fzs600's or an early gen two FZ6. Which one matey?

Tyres is a commonly discussed topic, best bet is to search the forum, many threads on it. I like Michelin pilot roads, some others like Bridgestone or metzeler, Stevie likes maxxis :lol

There are two versions of the clutch, normal and heavy duty (for the fzs600 anyway), some have had problems with the springs of the heavy duty one.

Welcome to the forum, as long as you don't mind a bit of pisstaking you will fit right in. And both bikes are cracking bikes :)

Greetings helmetvonthrob, and welcome to the foc-ers!

You'll love the Fazer, everyone does, it's The only bike you'll ever need. I've got no experience with the fz6, but owners rave about them. I've had 3 Fzs600's, and always regretted moving on from them.
I've done well about100k on them all year round, with not a single fault on any.
If you buy anything for this bike, buy the best you can get, then you only buy it once.

And tyres.......... Don't get me started
Everyone's got their preferences. A good quality sports/touring tyre suits these bikes well. (in not going to mention maxxis diamonds
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Welcome in pal

Sounds like you've got an FZ6 Fazer.

The old bike was the FZS600 Fazer and they were slightly updated from rectangle headlights to fox eye before the FZ6 was introduced as a new bike ith Fox Eyes.

Here's a pic of my old FZs600 and my dads 2004 FZ6

Simple. This is an Fzs600

And this is an fz6

Pretty different looking, so easy to tell. Probably an fz6 you have I guess?

It's an FZ6s.

So a couple of questions:

Does this age have a catalytic converter and how easy to get rid of it?

Assuming things like oil/plugs etc are ok, what would be the 1st. thing YOU would do?

By all accounts i think they're a pretty reliable bike the FZ6....they just werent all that popular, but they handle well and are quick if you keep the revs high.........only probkem my dad has had on his since 2004 is the steering head bearings needeing replaced......apparently yamaha forgot to put grease in......i dont think it's a common probkem.

If i had to do something then it would be replacing the plastic looking exhaust end cans for a set of twin scorpions 8)

Hi and welcome, please don't kill the the cat, it's there for a reason (where the exhaust goes through the swing arm, I think?) if it becomes part of the mot, what then?
Personally I don't like loud exhausts they just annoy people and attract Mr Plod which you don't need?

So I'll be doing a fair amount of motorway so was thinking about a set of flatter bars, anyone got any thoughts?  They certainly helped my Bandit.
