how old is old.
« on: 28 May 2013, 05:32:28 pm »
I was just reading a topic on here and some of the lads  think they are old at 50, I am 47 and still feeling good, and I am of the opinion once you start to feel old you get old faster,  so how old is old?
sent from my carafan in tenby, ;)

Its when your Doc asks you to go for a blood test and puts on sample age related.

Was 1966 a busy year for Fazer rider parents then? I'd say look after yourself and your not 'old' until long after you're past 60 - just don't try dressing like a teenager and going to Fabric, doesn't matter whether or not you feel old you'll certainly look it  :lol

As I'm only a couple months past 21, anyone past about 25 in my books!

On a slightly more serious note, it's definitely down to the individual. I know a few 20 year olds who are really about 50 odd, and my grandad who passed away last year was a 19 year old through and through until he went!

Well I have hit 65 and still thrashing the Fazer thou, want another 15 years out of it yet, feel a bit guilty using my heating allowance for new tyres though. When I fit a new chain or brake pads  I always think  " It should see my time out"

Had a new girl at work ask me "how old are you then?", so I told her 32.
Asked her how old she thought I was, she says "I thought you were about 26!"

I'll take that as a compliment  :D

(Still don't act 32 though!)

Who says 50 is old!?!? I'll be 57 in about 6 weeks and I'm off to Download for some headbanging in 2. The Fazer gets ridden most days, all year round, and I've no plans to give up.
You only start to feel old when you stop doing those things you love!

I've just hit 40 (yes, I know, I'm a sprog!) My body's absolutely hammered after a lifetime in the forces, I have to sit down to put my shoes on, and can't get up if I lie on the floor. I still think I'm 22, and on the bike I behave like a right tw@! Next day I suffer though. :-D
Bottom line is, your as old as you want to be!

Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!

What the hell is the matter with you guys. If you feel like riding just ride. I am 74 years young and am visiting spa in Belgium next month for the classic meeting. Stop counting and keep riding. Good luck and ride safe.

Good on ya Mikelockyer.

I turn 51 this year and still ride like Rossi... well maybe not that good but I'm still fighting fit and exercise regularly. I've got a 'six pack' and can still pull twenty year olds. My Mrs will testify to that.

 :lol

I will add that my speed proccessing power while riding dosen't seem as quick as it used to be but it's still bloody quick IMO.
Up until last year I was racing bikes as side car passenger in 1000cc Grasstrack and National Sprints but have now retired not due to health but because of family commitments. It's still in my blood and I miss it so badly. I've been lucky enough to win National Championships on two, three and four wheels and still feel I'd be quick enough to bag another, maybe racing supermarket trollys. I smoke, drink, ride fast, and look at good women. Maybe that's the secret.

Never ever ever give up because you think you're to old. I think my body will give up before I do.

I think theres more to it than physical years-although these take their toll with some health conditions. State of mind is so important & recognising that I don't have the reserves of energy nor the physical strength I had in my 50s. But if  you are generally happy & keep your sense of humour  you wont dwell on the gloomy things in life. Every day I take an inventory of all the good things I have & remember to feel grateful that I am still here when so many good people I knew are no longer around.....I love my bike for lots of reasons.....mainly for the same ones I felt 50 years ago! :lol

Hi That raised a few comments. My final word - If you are in any doubt as to wether you are still competent on the road, take the IAM course  or something similar. I took mine in 2007 at 67 years of age and was surprised at the amount I learnt and how it changed my rideing style. Try it !! Regard Mike

I have just turned 50 and this year I finally get the opertunity to do something I have wanted to to for 20 years. I am getting the ferry into Cherbourg and will ride to Sete on the south coast of France via the Milleau viaduct, and back again via Carcasonne. Just over 2000Km. I wish I had done it 20 years ago as I am sure it would have hurt less, but the only real difference is that age makes is that I will be packing Aspirin and Deep Heat instead of condoms and old spice.

After 30 you're old. We're not built to last much longer. Injuries start happening more often, even when warmed up, things take longer to heal, you can't party all night and go on to work as if nothing happened... you're old.

How people cope with it and how much they let it limit them, that's another matter... but there are limits.

One advantage - some wisdom perhaps. But in my country people say that wisdom and experience are what comes to you when you can no longer use it.   :)

Most things done in a hurry need to be done again - patiently.

you've all waffled - here's the definitive answer:

90 is a pretty good innings these days, so 0-30 is young, 30-60 is middle aged and 60-90 is old.

90 onwards is dead.

there.
is it clean enough?
