Jennys Surprise lived up to her name by winning
the Royal Artillery Gold Cup at
Sandown Park.
If it was hardly a shock that the 5-4 favourite triumphed in the 133rd running of this historic contest at Esher, the manner of her triumph certainly was.
It seemed Newton Thistle, with Harry Wallace on board, would get over the line first after seeing off Cowards Close - chasing the first back-to-back victory since 1890 - and going clear two fences from the end of a three mile chase which must have felt rather longer given the soft ground.
But Brodie Hampson refused to give up in the heavy rain and, as the leader visibly tired going up the steep final furlong, caught and overtook Newton Thistle to win by one-and-a half lengths
now be a good chap and fuck off if you are going to belittle someone else's acheivement!
