Title: Brands Hatch ride skills day
Post by: dazza on 15 January 2014, 02:59:35 pm
For those of you who expressed an interest some provisional dates have been set. It would be good if we could get a foccer contingent to enrole on the same date. Thoughts anyone ?

Silly question maybe, but can you do one without a rideable bike? I am sure extra training will help me, but orders from above (i.e. Mum) mean that I have had to cancel the insurance on the ZX4 - and am not allowed to renew it until after Uni is over: Over a year and a hafl off bikes!!  :'( :'(

Christo, yes, you're right, that was a silly question, in fact, it was unbelievably dumb. Unless of course, someone would be willing to lend you their bike. :rollin
Exupnut, get yourself on fleabay and get a cheapo 2nd hand set.

If you want, you can borrow my set. It's not as if I'm using them, and you're the same sort of size as me...

Surely there are hire bikes available,  sounds like you can hire bikes for track days so why not bikesafe

would this be a case of book individually or group booking?
Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day
Post by: dazza on 18 January 2014, 10:05:57 pm
Strictly run what you brung for bikesafe I was told, for one you are taken on the road with an IAMS instructor and would imagine the slow speed control would be tricky on a track bike. Individual booking, but if a few of us want to go then perhaps mention in the email that we would like to go on the same date. Maybe later in the year when the weather should be better would also give us a better chance of getting the same date.

Been thinking about this. Maybe those interested should agree on a month, say may/june give the weather chance to improve, people get themselves some leathers and if we book it soon we should all be able to get on the same date. Just saying.

2x 20 minute track sessions!
since it's meant to be primarily about safer riding skills on the roads (or so i thought)and not racing surely having to have 1peice leathers eliminates a good number of the riders who probably need it most :\ .

They hold different types of road skills days, holding this one at a track makes perfect sense as you can learn a lot more about what you and the bike are capable of on the track safer than on roads.
Having received an email it appears you can hire leathers for £45 for the day.
If you want to do their road skills training without the track sessions then pick a suitable training day!

Hope it comes off as sometimes they can be a bit tricky weatherwise, as Brands is a natural frost pocket if there is snow about I live about 10 mins away, weather so fickle, they have run brilliant Jan/Feb days lol
Will keep fingers crossed, as they already had the October one postponed because of the storm, be a shame to be disappointed twice.

Yeah, although I ride all weather's I'd much prefer to do this on a warmer dry day!
I agree, it is a safety thing too, as my son came off a few years back on a Feb day (one of many) they had delayed start waiting for snow to melt, but of course track was still very cold and a few forgot to wait until tyres warmed up and came off as a result, while waiting for these to be picked up, my son forgot his tyres were losing heat and became another victim. Came off at Graham Hill so had a soft landing on grass, so no real harm done!

Another good reason why we should wait till May I think.  Slippery conditions has got to take the fun out of it a bit and to be perfectly honest the track sessions are the main reason a lot of people go,  me included.

codgie, this event is structured to cater for all abilities and the emphasis is on having fun. So, don't know if you were serious or not but either way it's beneficial to all.
Just, had an e-mail from Jim and to get us on the same day I will need to give him the other names, somehow I don't think punkstig and kitcrazy is going to mean a lot to him :lol. So give me your real names foccer's (if their too embarrassing you can pm me) :b

Post by: dazza on 04 February 2014, 05:19:59 am
Ok foccers, I've had an e-mail from Jim giving me a slot on 24 March but I'm going to decline that one and hold out for a later one as I intend to fully rag it round that track.  :b. So would rather it not be too slippery. He also mentioned that he didn't recognize punkstig's or kitkrazy's names on any of the emails and has asked if you would get back in touch to ensure we can get on together. So. If you both agree to get on a later date and want to go together drop him a line,  cheers.  Also any other foccer's seriously thinking of this get an e-mail sent mentioning the forum and opting for a later slot,  say May I think would be good.

If you enjoyed yesterday with those lovely bends, you will enjoy track sessions with KFB, as only their peeps on the track during their sessions, so no racers cutting you up, cones to mark turn in points, three slow sighting laps with no overtaking, and a MSV instructor to help if you ask. Very relaxed and friendly day 8)

You really can buy a cheap set of leathers be it a one piece or two piece on eBay.There are literally hundreds on there. For sizing you can go to a shop try on a brand new set so you know what size to look out for, only Day this because the European sizes can be confusing. Just a thought.

For those saying lack of leathers is putting them off, you can hire them from Motor Sport Vision on the day, I think it's about £45.  My friend did it last time.

Ok, for those that don't check emails regularly I've had one from Jim today offering us either may 6th or June 30th, what's the general consensus- I'm easy for either, and life in general!

Hmm, is it worth the challenge of getting my bike built for the 30th?  ;)

Depends on whether it survives your ownership or not...

Does modding count as survival?
Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day

I guess so... but relationships with German estates, tarmac and grass verges don't count as modding (amongst many other items)

All Firebike peeps go in one dedicated group, whatever their experience on track, to keep novices safe from MSV guys, as it is a combined day. go as fast or as slow as you like in complete safety, it is up to you.
As Brands is my home track have done Indy masses of times in Inters, but not brave or flush enough to try GP or fast group lol
Have also done Cadwell several times on R6 and R1, Darley Moor (R6) and Oulton Park R1
Down to be there March 25th, May 6th and June  as had a seven year break until last year, then went round Brands on Fazer 8 and wasn't dissapointed 8)

Punkstig - do they allow leopard print on the track or is it a scrutineering fail?  :b
Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day
Post by: Punkstig on 04 April 2014, 08:29:45 am
Leopard print is a definite fail, mainly because it seems to be the popular choice for punks/emo's/scene kids, hence why I chose TIGER print, because in a class of being 'different' I choose to be different!
Hahaha!

So, we are in June....not long to go, hopefully I'll have my exhaust studs fixed (Yeah, thanks Red!) and will have scrubbed in my new tyres.

So, who is actually coming to this on the 30th June??

I was going to speak to Jim at Kent firebike and see if we could organise a slow ride down the main straight at the end of the day a la Top Gear style, all the fazers in a row with a photo of us all taken from in front by some brave soul standing on the track.  Could be done I reckon!   :)
Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day

Hi Harry, as far as I know there will be....Me, you
Harry Hornby
Dazza
Kitcrazy (subject to getting a bike)
Punkstig
Grandma (Think she is one of the IAMS instructors)
Buzz

If there is anymore, make yourself known.

Yes it would be good if we could get a Foccer photo on the main straight, perhaps all on the start line with pole position reserved for the fastest of the day and retrospective positions for the 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th fastest. Gives a little added incentive to rag it. :b

Been having a little Fazer fettle today in preparation
Barn door screen replaced
Barkbusters removed
Givi rack removed
Oil and filter changed
Frame covers dropped off at powder coaters
Exup valved checked
Brakes checked and pistons regreased
New rear tyre at the end of the week to be fitted
Booked in for valve clearance check next week
And
Subject to funds
Fresh front fork oil nearer the day. :)

Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day
Post by: dazza on 03 June 2014, 11:50:56 pm
Actually Neil, that's a fair point. Although only the Indy circuit so pretty tight, the 600's will get swamped out of the bends, although Punkstig's  pretty good in the corners.

How about, for a thou to gain a position on a 600, they have to lap them at least once......

What do you think, does that sound fair ?
Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day

In that case then Dazza, I reckon it will be Grandma on pole, Punkstig, Dazza on the front row, in that order.  I know my place, I'll head straight for the back row!

PS, they don't allow timing on a track day like this, saying that, would they notice the sundial for my timed lap???  :lol

You will need both parts of driving licence, one piece or full zip around two piece leathers if going on track, and baffles in, as bike will be noise tested before going on track.
The refreshments should be open that day, there have been days when for some reason it was not, fuel station on A20 just along road from track entrance, though advisable to fill up just before reaching Brands in morning if time.
Hoping for a nice sunny dry day, though not too hot please lol :D
Sure Jim will post out info, as he is usually very efficient :b

BRILLIANT day out, all foccers should go on this.  Thanks to Grandma for my fairly glowing report after my advanced ride (I read it when I got home).  and PS, what's wrong with 30mph in a 60??  :b

Felt loads more confident on the track this time, even managed to scrub up my tires a bit :-)  I certainly overtook more than I was overtaken this time, a complete reversal from the last time  :) :) :) :)

Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day
Post by: Buzz on 01 July 2014, 08:55:23 am
Very happy to take the the wooden spoon prize of "Slowest Foccer on the track".  Even Punkstig going past on the outside round Clearways, punching the air whilst "knee down" couldn't speed me up!

The first lap of the day was pretty nerve wracking as being on a track was way out of my normal riding comfort zone, but after the end of the second session (after 20ish laps) I was pretty much getting the lines right and feeling miles more comfortable.  The ratio of being overtaken to overtook was probably about 10 to 1 but I didn't really care, it's an experience I won't forget and was on a massive high afterwards (so much so that only when I was on the M25 did I realise that I forgot my rucksack like a total tw@t and had to come back for it!!   :lol ).

I think I'm going to do a Novice track day on that back of it, I must be mad.

Greetings to Dazza, HarryHornby and Punkstig, a lovely bunch of lads and you've really shown me what Fazers are capable of.  That yellow one was crazy fast!  Sorry that I didn't say Hi to you, Grandma...you were always deep in conversation and I never got the chance...next time.

And yes, that hill was like dropping off the end of the world.  :eek

Buzz- a proper trackday will be mutch better for your confidence, mainly because you'll be in groups of similar abilities.
Focused events trackdays now fit all bikes with a tracker system that works out all your lap times etc and after lunch they put you in proper matched speed groups!
Title: Re: Brands Hatch ride skills day
Post by: HarryHornby on 01 July 2014, 04:25:47 pm
Buzz, that was soooo me last time.  On both sessions I was just glad they were over and I got back in one piece, while grinning because I'd actually ridden Brands Hatch (a track I've watched races at so often over the years).
Yesterday was a different ball game, I remembered corners from last time, I didn't try to push it (except once on Clearways, the bike squirmed a little and I shouted, FUCKING YESSSS in my helmet, with a big grin) but apart from that I felt so much different going round.  Still at my own pace, but this time I over took more than I was overtaken.....bonus!
Do ride skills or a track day again and you will notice the difference, I did!   :)
