Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: Chopped the Fazer 8 in for a Tracer....
« on: 18 May 2015, 07:12:49 pm »
Ok thoughts so far on the Tracer,

The riding position is roomy and upright with great visibility. The bike itself is narrow and light with a riding position that is canted slightly forward. The bars are wide in comparison to the Fazer with loads of leverage which  makes for a flickable, responsive ride. Certainly more manoeuvrable than the Fazer but what you gain in flick-ability... you lose in stability. The front paws at the air under hard acceleration and can feel remote in the wet (the first time I've had ABS kick in in any bike). That said, I changed the oe tyres on the Fazer at one point and it felt much more confidence inspiring. Of course. You can leave the TCS on, and use the mode buttons but unless it's torrential I don't bother.

So, the motor...... There was nothing wrong with the Fazer. Great linear power delivery that reacts well to being spun up and ridden hard. However, the Tracer is very, very easy to ride fast. The power is easily accessible and the motor spins-up quickly. You can leave it in third gear and it will cope with hairpins and any thing up to treble figures. However, the clutch is light and effortless and the motor has a split personality which also enjoys working the gear box and keeping things spinning.

The bike is quick, comfortable and well built. It's a lot of bike for the money but it does feel insubstantial at times. This probably because I'm still getting used to sitting upright and have never really ridden trail-style, light weight bikes. For me I'd like to be sat a little bit more over the front but that is just a personal preference.

In conclusion, I'm thrilled with the Tracer. However, at times I do miss the Fazer and on balance I'd say that these are two different bikes rather than one being better than the other.

Cheers,

Scotty aka The Fatwasp

Happy to oblige. Just rolled over 1000 miles so I'll post something soon.

Thanks mate. Yes, it's all run-in now. Easy to ride, great power...the front is a bit lively when you give it the beans.... But then you can always leave the traction control on!!!! Chuffed to bits with the Tracer. The MT07 is a great bit of kit too by all accounts. It's great showing the race rep boys a clean pair of heals....

Just done thirty motorway miles with the screen on its highest setting in the pissing rain. I'm 5'8" and found the protection on a par with the Fazer. I had a touring screen fitted on the Fazer. First impressions were that the Tracer has a smaller screen but the overall front profile also includes hand guards and quite a high light cluster. Overall, I was fairly snug and had dry hands so no complaints there.

No extras mate. They've sold six in a week. I've gone for the matte grey. Love it.... frustrated with running-in restrictions but overall, really pleased with it. Headlights are fantastic too with the led lights.

I have heard a rumour that Yamaha will be putting prices up and that they are nearly sold out. I doubt that though.

I've had two years of enjoyment on the Fazer which I maintain is the most underrated bike in the market today. However, I popped in to South Wales Superbikes in Thursday and Dave threw the keys for the Tracer demo' bike at me. I took it for a 30 minute spin and fell for it completely. It is light, extremely torquey and very comfortable. The seating position affords a great view over traffic (I'm 5'8") and the bike is very flickable without being skittish. It is very, very easy to ride quickly and has a larger tank and better economy than the Fazer which is important to me as this is my daily commuter. I'm completely smitten and was able to chop then Fazer in and lower my monthly payments through a PCP deal with nothing to find... which proves that the residuals on the Fazer aren't as bad as reported. Anyway.... I guess I'll have to find another forum. All the best folks.

"Fatwasp, what kind of milage did you get out of the MPR3s? or are you still on the first set?"

I'm still on the first set mate. I replaced the OE tyres after 3,500miles. They had a pronounced, of centre 'V' shaped profile on the front and were squared-off at the rear. I'm 3,000miles into the MPR3s - travelling the same daily commute and the odd weekend scratch. There is no noticeable change in profile to the front or rear and no change in feel. They are great. I would replace like for like in the future. I don't think my ability would benefit from any marginal improvement from the MPR4's - but then again, I DIDN'T REALISE THAT THE OE TYRES WERE SO POOR. While I'm at it, how on earth do you manage to get 10,000 + miles from a set of tyres? That's a great return on your investment - fair play.

I've just fitted a set of Michelin Pilot Road 3 to the Fazer and it has totally transformed the ride, handling and braking of the bike.

I had no idea that the OE tyres were so poor until I upgraded them today. The bike no longer falls into bends, it now 'rolls' and feels planted to the road. It doesn't shimmy over white lines and the rear suspension feels less 'loose' on choppy roads when banked over. I've had a few heart stopping moments especially on roundabouts when the front has lost grip in the wet but these things are incredible.

These are my initial thoughts having covered one hundred miles on un-scrubbed tyres in the wet. If these things last as well as the reviews suggest I'll be chuffed to bits.

Oh and no I don't work for Michelin.

I chose a Fazer8 after owning a new gen FZ1 and GSXR750. I was looking for a compromise as I was spending too much on tyres and petrol but needed big bike thrills. As it happens I didn't have to compromise the Fazer8 is real world fast, handles well, is economical and with a touring screen and Akrapovic I can commute, scratch and tour. I am a lot quicker on the Fazer8 than the FZ1 as the power is more accessible and the riding position and wide bars allow you to throw it about with relish. Added a bit of preload and an extra 2 psi to the back to sort out the ride... spot on. Can keep up with anything. Bargains to be had now as well...

Looking good there Grandma.

I've put 2000 miles on the Fazer in a couple of months. I have to confess, I've put two more clicks of preload on the rear and an extra PSI.

It now handles as it should. Glad I didn't shell out on a new shock.

Hi Grandma. Yes, I've just had the 600 mile service done at SW Superbikes. I mentioned it to Dave and he said don't bother with a rear shock upgrade. They tend to bed-in after 1000 miles. I've never heard of suspension being run-in but as it is the cheapest option I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'll probably just get used to it. I've noticed the gearbox to be a little slicker after the service but still not thrashed the thing in anger yet.

Thanks for the input lads. Much appreciated.

Just put 300 miles on it this weekend around Monmouthsire's lanes. It only gets a bit tastey on poorly surfaced B roads. Still remains predictable but have been kicked out of the seat a couple of times.

Must admit, third gear is very flexible between 30 and 100 on the twisties. Hit the limiter a couple of times... any thoughts about running-in periods? I confess to having been lost in the moment and neglected the manufacturers instructions!!

Hi folks,
Loving my new Fazer8. Anyone got any advice on suspension improvement. I've got a model without the adjustable sussy. I'm 13st and need better damping and less dive at the front. The rear just needs better damping as preload is adjustable. I can't afford new shocks would stiffer springs and heavier fork oil help and is this something a dealer could do? Any ideas on cost?
Cheers

Hi mate,

Have a look at the Fazer 8 thread, I've posted a picture on there.

I really wanted a black Fazer 8 so went for a deal on a 2011 model which they were looking to clear. They have various options. I was tempted by a 2013 unfaired in black and white but a test ride convinced me that I need a fairing for the daily commute.

They have a demonstrator in white with an Akrapovic can which I test rode. The free breathing pipe releases a decent chunk of mid range, sounds great and pops and bangs on the over-run.... lovely!!

They have the full range of colours. Go down and see Dave... say that Scott sent you. I'm really pleased with it. My brother in law has a fazer6 which is great fun. I find that I don't have to work quite as hard as him on the 800. I don't miss my FZ1 and haven't really wound the FZ8 up yet as I'm still running it in.

Good luck, great weekend for a test ride let me know how you get on.

The touring screen does a great job of keeping the flies out of my teeth and allows for comfortable cruising up to 100. That said, I'm only 5ft 8 so I can't account for any turbulence for taller riders. I'm struggling to find fault to be honest. The rear shock is a bit choppy on bumpy roads at speed. I might add a bit of preload to the rear but am hesitant as it may make things worse and the only thing that would deal with these shitty roads is a landrover. I'm still running it in but have to say that in the real world it is a far better package than my FZ1 Fazer... 99% of the time... for me.

New Fazer 8

Touring Screen and Akrapovic.

I'm really pleased and seem to be able to access the performance a lot more easily than on my recent Fazer1.

I think it will improve as I run it in. Have to say that first impressions are that it's nimble, torquey and sure-footed. Fuel economy has pleasantly surprised me and I really don't feel as though I've compromised from the litre bike whilst gaining more practical advantages. I used to go through fuel and rear tyres at an alarming rate and commute 12 months a year.

Overall - early days but i'm chuffed.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks, very much appreciated.

Picked up the bike yesterday so doing a bit of gentle running-in. The Akrapovics are tasty without being overly raucous!! I'm well chuffed and up for a scratch with local valley dwellers.

Cheers!!

My biking journey so far...

From sunny south Wales just outside of Pontypool:

 • BMWR1150R - ok but too heavy
 • CBR600F - loved it....written off by dizzy cow roughly from behind
 • Aprilia Futura RSV1000 - loved it.... flimsy plastics crap wiring great motor
 • FZ1 Fazer (2008) - bought new, loved it but too thirsty, fantastic fit and finish
 • XJR6 Diversion (2010) - fun, economical but not enough torque and a bit light-weight
 • GSXR750R - absolutely brilliant but brought out the inner lunatic, thirsty and below average build quality
 • FZ8 Fazer (2013) akrapovic - got there in the end!!!!
So, seven bikes later and I've actually arrived at the right bike for me. I was initially put off my luke warm reviews and the thought of castrating a FZ1 seemed all wrong. However, I popped in to South Wales Superbikes and was persuaded to take the demonstrator out for a blast in the pissing rain at the weekend. It was a revelation -  nimble but stable and offering all of the advantages of my much missed FZ1 without the disadvantages. I sold the FZ1 because the performance whilst stunning was only accessible at license shredding speeds. Below the ton I found that it was very thirsty and I was spending a fortune on tyres. The FZ8 is the best kept secret in biking... I have been looking at the Triumph Street Triple but found it too be a bit delicate and lacking presence. I'm really glad to be back on a Fazer...

I'm sure the new Yamaha triple will be special - but I rather like the idea of being in an exclusive club of FZ8 enthusiasts for the forseable.
