why spend 5 times more money on Givi luggage

I couldn't help noticing the huge disparity in prices between different makes of what are essentially just big plastic boxes. I wondered whether there was any justification (and, from a buyers point of view, whether it was worth spending the extra money) or whether you were just paying extra for the name. Is a Givi or Krauser (for example) top box or pannier stronger or more secure? A bit thicker plastic maybe but does that really matter?

It does if u drop the bike.... A good quality box will protect ur bike and probably still be usable afterwards. Givi box's are very good imo.

Yup I've got a givvi, it's the mutts. Put one on me stepdaughters 50cc scooter, she had a walking speed spill and hardly any damage to the bike, box took it all, just loosened the rack mount a bit which was an easy fix..

I've had my Givi box for about 15 years now after buying it 2nd had from fleabay. its still solid and takes a few knocks without a problem.

A Givi box is an investment & can be moved from bike to bike so £200 or thereabouts over the boxes lifespan of say 10 years isnt a lot. Plus spares are readily available. Im biased but  have used their products for many years & theyre top quality.If you can pick up 2nd hand-even better!

I see Givi as an investment.  It is extremely well made, last forever and - importantly - waterproof.  As you change your bike all you need is the fitting kit for your new machine. Worth the extra money - you bet it is!!

Givi products don't have to cost the earth either - I managed to pick up my 45L box for £45 on eBay

Can concur with the others. Picked up a 52ltr Maxia box off ebay for £50. Bit old, but in good nick and had back rest on it. Dropped bike couple of times with it on. Last one, car swapped lanes took me out, was doing about 25-30mph, bike came down hard, Givi bars bent, M3 plate snapped in half, Givi box was sent skidding across three lanes of traffic. Fairing cracked bad, can scrapped bad. Givi box, just has an extra scratch on it... Rear of bike looks untouched.  This is with me carrying a 15kg Pragmasis chain/padlock in it!

Only bad point is the box now leaks a little in heavy rain.

Whoa there - I had Krauser panniers and a Givi top box on my FJ1200 for 15 years and it was a faultless set. I like the Krauser panniers because they are slim but still have plenty of capacity, but preferred the Givi box because of its capacity.


When Liz needed a top box for her Fazer 1000, she demanded the Givi - because it took 2 full face helmets - so I got a Krauser top box to match my panniers - every bit as good, but without the capacity, hence the Givi wins.


Then, 2 years ago, our son needed a top box for his Fazer 600 - we got a Givi rack, but then bought a £50 cheap top box that fit the Givi rack perfectly. In use, even though it feels thinner and "cheaper" than the Givi, it's been perfectly useable, waterproof and looks very nice - every bit as good as the Givi in anything "measurable", but lacking the "air of quality".


Would I spend £50 on another "copy" or pay +£200 for a Givi - so far, it would have to be the "copy".

The snob in me likes the Givi stuff, I've got a cheaper monolock on the 125 and a monokey system on the Fazer.


I paid a bit more second hand for a V46 (which doesn't take two lids) then I could have paid for a new Kappa box. Other then liking the looks of the Givi more I'm sure the Kappa box would have been fine.
