Title: Standard Mods?
Post by: BurnTheWitch on 20 April 2018, 01:07:16 pm
Are there any mods that i should think about with my bike?
It's a stock 2001 FZS600 68k. Been serviced and well cared for.

What has everyone else done to their bike to make it preform, sound, handle and look better?

2001 Boxeye?
If so, do the dual headlight mod if it hasn't been done already.

Ah the yearning for more. Just like me you want to spice up your fazer. Trouble is Yamaha did such a good job that if the fazer was put back into production tomorrow I honestly believe it would sell.

Nevertheless there are ways to modify it. For the relatively  cheap and easy:
Stainless radiator grill
Braided brake lines (real flair comes with getting them colour matched to other upgrades)
Seat re-upholstery. (Polish guys on eBay or DIY kits from France.
Touring screen (colour match!)
New grips (I only say this one because I bought some yesterday. I got blue bar ends to match the blue dot brake calipers cos I'm a real pro)

For a bit more cash:
Aftermarket exhaust and headers.
Upside down fork upgrade or just an upgrade to linear springs with better oil (suited to your weight)
Rear shock upgrade ( I've heard the R1s can be adapted to fit our fazers)

I'm sure others can think of many more as well. The Fazer was always a bargain bin bike made of the leftovers of others but it is far more than the sum of its parts.

K&N air filter for a little bit more bhp (although some may disagree)

Front fender extender to keep some of the crap off the road from getting over your engine/exhaust pipes.

It's more for cleaner throttle, i've had my bike Dyno'd a few times and there's no real BHP improvement, but i'm 100% certain that it contributes to a better all round feel to the bike, and would totally recommend one as well.

Whenever mods are mentioned I always forget about the grips and it is one of the first things I did as I was feeling vibrations and a set of Pro Grips (I think) sorted it for me.
If you dont intend to carry pillion like me then I think removing the grab rail and lifting the numberplate right under the rear light and cut the rear guard flush makes the back end look better and is very cheap to do but also to be leagal you need to add a reflector at the bottom - my picture is before I added it and a hugger looks good with it too.

Double bubble screen tinted, R1 or R6 pattern mirrors, renthal bars, Chinese anodised CNC brake/clutch levers, short stem smoked lens indicators. None of these will make your bike faster but will bring your bike into the 21st century in terms of looks.

Thank you all so much for the advice.
Will hopefully be collecting her Monday, theni can start thinking about the changes to be made.

I'm not looking to make her faster, but if i can make her prettier i'll be very happy :-)

Not everyones cup of tea but kept my mods subtle. Renthal bars, braided hoses, exhaust, heavier fork oil, grab rail removal after advice on this site and a smoked rear light, which after my doubts turns out to be brighter than the original, de badged . All I need to do is upgrade the rear shock.

Front sprocket nut, twin headlight, Orange indicator bulbs with clear lenses, hugger, fender extender, heated grips. I really like Fazersharps tail tidy too.

Here is another angle, there is scope to further shape the mudguard until you get too close to the turn signal stalks. I covered the gap rail holes with black gloss sticky vinyl in a lozenge shape covering both holes with one piece but two layers to make it thicker it is nice and flat and unless you are standing next to the bike you can not see them. I was easy for me because its black but if you have a colour bike then you may struggle for a match I suggest you could go to a local sign makers who will have a big selection of colour vinyl on rolls.
I used the same mounting holes in the guard so needed a new plate so I could drill the holes in the new position on the plate.

Hi Fazersharp the rims are stripped back, done by the previous owner, I plugged my grab rail holes with some rubber blind grommets so I can take them out and put the rail back on if needed and vice versa.

Hi it's the ones up to 2008, I think the most recent ones have the electronics to tilt the mirror.
They're a bit longer and sleeker looking than fazer originals.

Do they take much looking after - would you rather they were not done, from a maintenance ball ache point of view.
And yes I still have the grab rail and can peal off the black sticky.

I bought a set of cheap mirrors for my FZS 600 2003 from eGay, I paid about 24 quid for them, I certainly got what I paid for, they buzzed with vibration at most speeds and above 80 the right hand side mirror used to fold back in so I could see my own chest and right arm, very useful. I sent them back and got a refund.
Bought a pair of second hand genuine ones from a seller on eGay £30, worth every penny, they were practically unmarked, polished the plastics backs up with solvo and they came up like new.

The pitch between the holes is a standard 30mm, if in doubt you can send them a message on fleabay.

Tommy's right, the quality isn't going to be as good as the genuine article. However, I've had no problems with mine. You can adjust their tension it's a simple spring and bolt arrangement.

Strangely enough... When I had my FJR1300 I replaced the mirrors with FZS1000 mirrors for a much better view. If the R1 mirrors are anything like the difference I had with my FJR you will be amazed at what you can see behind you. Just be careful of filtering etc until you get used to them.
I have bar end mirrors on my FZS1000 and they are great but a tad small.

Filled the original mirror mount holes with LEDs connected to the indicators, I don't think they make much difference but they fill the holes.

Every time I tidy it up our son does 'some work' in there and it's a mess again because he doesn't put anything away. I've recently been having a right go at him about it and it is slowly paying off... and I do mean slowly! Basically I keep my stuff tidy and if his stuff is in my way I kick it out of the way.

Replace the rear shock, the OE were crap when new many didn't last more than 8k, there's load to choose from to match your budget all will be better than OE.  The front is also a little soft set of up rated springs, if the budget allows get the dampener/shim stack sorted, fit a Quill Evo and a K&N couple hp more top end but it really cleans up the low to mid range.

If your's is a box eye fit HID's, don't bother with the headlight mod it's a waste of time compered to the HID conversion.  Just remember you've got to convert back to standard at MOT time, some will let the HID go others wont, it's easy to convert back and forth.  Or fit the later twin H4 firing, you need the bracket as well and you'll have to do a bit of modding but it's worth it, go HID with that and it's better than your car!!!

That's about it, the Fazer is one of those rare bikes where they're pretty much right out of the show room, in my opinion it's the best bike Yam have ever made and probably the best all round bike ever made. :D

There's no performance improvement over serviceable standard copper core plugs.  This has been gone over and over, iridium plugs just last longer, you will feel an improvement if the plugs they replaced were at the end of their service life but no more than if you fit new copper core.  Of course it's personnel choice and it's your money to throw away they cost approximately twice as much as chopper.
