FZS600 Fazer / ex dead spot in revs.
« on: 21 July 2015, 01:16:48 pm »
well it was with a certain lack of confidence in changing the air filter doing the trick that it was changed. I have never had an air filter have that effect. Modifying an ER5 air box caused it to rev to 5k, no more in any gear or neutral so I guess it could be.

Amazing result, flat spot completely gone, amazing. Thanks.

get a helicoil fitted it'll be fine. I would do all of them as they are probably worn if gorilla did them up.

I have a laser thermometer so that's handy, but only falters under load but is definitely a useful bit of kit, especially for tyre temperatures on the track. Got air filter now, just need to fit. I would be pleasantly surprised if it was. The only similar effect I had was on a kwak. Drilled the airbox as it was restrictive. Revved to 5k and that was that, no more. Oh well. Filled holes back in and fine. Obviously needed the plenum effect  :D

plus 1 on the front for me, been using it for 50 000 miles. Can pull the wheel forward enough for a new tyre to scrape the hugger though. Standard chain. It's the equivalent of minus 3 on the rear. Much better.

« on: 06 July 2015, 03:58:32 pm »
for the record, the tension on the chain will keep the sprocket on the spline unless the wheel is badly misaligned, over use can cause play to be introduced in the spline and for the threads to wear. The tab washer should hold the nut in place if used properly. I had a TDM 850 where the nut had completely come off and never had an issue. I didn't know it had but it had been off for ages. The end result was no damage amazingly. Not to be recommended but it's not as scary as it's made out to be.

The carb is changing over from one set of jets to another at that rev range point and it only takes very slight pressure change from dirty air filter to mess it up totally.  Once you get the revs higher it will be running slightly rich but not enough to give misfires or significant power loss
it's definitely not happy and if the air filter doesn't help matters I shall swap it for another TPS I know is okay. I may try the iridium plugs I swapped out last time for normal 9Es too. I know NGK state 8Es but some recommended 9s

cheers guys. Odd it will clearish when it pulls through the dead spot. Need to set the tps to start with. I reckon if the air filter was to blame it wouldn't pull through? I think she needs newer carbs but it does feel electrical.

Air filter isn't very old I think but I do a fair mileage so may be I guess, the fact it runs though it of sorts makes me think ignition of carbs.Carbs must be shagged by now, I know they are well out of balance. I wondered if a dead spot on the tps would screw with the ECU.

my less than pristine 98 with only 120 000 miles on has developed a massive dead spot and misfire between 7k and 8k, once through this it's better but not perfect. Most of the use she gets is up to 7k but it's irritating all the same when I do want the extra revs. Carbs are worn to fook of course although it feels electrical. The TPS doesn't affect higher revs does it?

I have some spare coils so may fit them and check connections of course but I have heard many other stories of this dead spot, almost like turning the ignition off, but no resolution other than substitution hoping to hit the cause. The plugs aren't that old but if they were knackered it wouldn't pull through. The problem is worse due to the open 2 port blue flame of course but it never used to be there

any definitive ideas other than the usual clean carbs, change plugs please  ;)

Mind you, took the bike out this evening.. At 40 mph 2500rpm, 70mph 4750rpm,
far better than standard gearing, 120 tyre is far better too

I went +1 on the front.
It takes less than a 1/4 hour (assuming you've got an air impact wrench) and has knocked about 7-800 RPM off in top gear.
I haven't noticed any difference in acceleration, bloody fast is bloody fast if you ask me.
It's a lot more relaxed now and 7K RPM cruising at 90(ish) is fine for the big miles.
IIRC it's doing about 4.5K RPM at 60MPH, it still picks up from there but a change down to 5th is needed for a quick squirt round the cars.
One thing though, it struggles to rev out in top, it gets to about 125 and runs out of puff so for top speed runs it's a case of 5th and scream it.

***All speed tests were done on private roads****
mine doesn't quite rev out but I am a heavy fooker, but shows 140 plus on the speedo with +1 on the front. My speed testing is done on public roads :-)

I still haven't done this, but need to order new chain and sprockets anyway soon.

Tempted to go two up on the front now, and maybe one down on the rear.

I'll then use my drz4 sm for honing around on!
2 up on the front and a standard length chain will cause the tyre to drag on the hugger if you have one fitted, I know this :-)

1 up on the front is the equivalent of 3 down on the back, 2 on the front the equvalent of 6 on the rear, it is quite drastic but would be interesting to know. I have tried 4 down on the back, and now run standard rear and one up on the front with standard length chain. Trouble is, 7k is about 100ish and the flat spot causes slow accelration when in top, easier to drop a gear to 110 and then hook top again. Depends how you ride but you con't want the torque of the engine to struggle in the higher gears on hills, 2 up on the front should be just about okay but will play havoc in certain situations. Standard gearing is far too buzzy for me, feels like a gear missing

Hmm, 2 up un front and 2 down on rear may give issues on steep climbs or heavily loaded to keep the torque up but try it and see, thats the way.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: thou rear caliper on 600
« on: 13 June 2014, 08:34:11 am »
Yes it is easier to lock the rear wheel, especially with the weight transfer to the front, especially under panic braking, but the benefits outweigh the negatives. As riding is all a matter of confidence, fit whatever brakes and tyres you want so that psychologically you feel it is the best for you. Personally the thou caliper with soft pads has been fantastic for me even with the occasional skipping through partial lock up. Of course, with observation it is very rare to need to panic brake, but that comes with experience and skill.

No, just an advisory. Mine passed on Tuesday without a chain guard on.
change your MoT place, the one you use isn't professional. Something like this for an advisory is incompetent, as it riding a bike without some form of chain guard.

is there a planned meeting time FireDwarf? Would like to pop along but may not be able to go on the procession afterwards due to other commitments near the area.

£50 buys a replacement. That amount of deformation is a scrapper. How the fuck though? Spares are easy to come by, I have a pair in the garage.
