Oil Pan/Sensor Leak
« on: 03 September 2016, 11:20:26 am »
So, i noticed something smoking after a ride last night....

After scrambling around, looks like oil burning off the downpipes, coming from under the engine, i suspect the oil level sensor....

video :

any advice, looking like pipes off job to get to this and that going to be a real pain

All a bit too dark to make out what's going on in your video, but have you checked the oil transfer pipe at the front of the engine? It's very exposed and prone to rusting through... I've had to replace it a couple of times.

<edit>
Sorry. I saw FZS600 under your name and didn't realise this was posted in the 1000cc corner... just ignore me. :)

Looks like coolant not oil.  It's boiling off, not burning.  Prime suspect would be the water/oil pump seal which is designed to drain out of a hole in the sump if it fails, rather than let water into the engine oil.

So, got the downpipes off and sure enough coolant coming out of the drain hole at the front of the engine...

That link is excellent, did not realise its a sump off job, but here we go...

Progress, should have it all out tomorrow....fiddly job and messy as hell.

Still pondering if the clutch has to come out as the Haynes manual says to loosen the chain guard for the oil pump sprocket....but we will see....may be best time to just do a clutch plate change as have been thinking about maybe needing it

You're in there, I'd replace it rather than have to go back a second time. :)

just below front sprocket one of the water pipes that goes into the Pump in the engine...

There is a o-ring or something that goes in there, i cannot find it any where on parts lists or diagrams....
