FZS600 Fazer / Rear Caliper seal...
« on: 10 June 2015, 10:12:29 pm »
So when i took off my OEM caliper i thought it was toast....so put a 1000 caliper on it...

Now that i know a little more....or have done a lot with the front and rear braking i think it will actually be salavagable....

But i have lost a little "O" ring seal i think

Anyone know what part this is, i cannot see a caliper expanded to this level in parts catalaogs...

The seal goes i think in the recess on the second pic, of course these are the 2 "halves..." of the caliper...

FZS600 Fazer / Horny....
« on: 09 June 2015, 11:46:40 am »
So i took the horn off today as i thought it was broken.....

I hooked my AVO ( Amp/Volt/Ohmeter...) to the switched terminals and when i pushed the switch it showed as 12V....

I HAD previously painted it with hammerite so assumed i have "broke" it then, but i thought i would have a fiddle...

There is a small screw on the back of it....i un-did that and it sprang into life, scaring the hell out of me in the process....

I suspect its to adjust the tone of the horn by screwing it in or out and i think when i painted it i just screwed it all the way in locking the diaphragm down fully....so no tone!!!!

Just thought i would post in case anyone else had seen the issue....

Said screw shown here:

FZS600 Fazer / Spark plug noises...
« on: 09 June 2015, 11:32:38 am »
So i have been turning the bike over each day for a few days now and from cold it is a little clicky.....

when i say clicky i percieve it to be the spark plugs - they sound rapid and constant initially and then after the engine warms up nicely they are much quiter and i eventually do not notice anything..for the most part....

it revvs fine, on the center stand, not road tested yet, and it revs strongly as i would expect to the limiter, no issue there...

so do spark plugs sound noisey initially or is that crap  :)

FZS600 Fazer / Braided Lines...
« on: 07 June 2015, 04:11:08 pm »
So i had a go at fitting my braided lines...and for now as i have an MOT this week have settled with my stock lines and re-bled them..

The issue i had was routing, all looked ok, but anyone have any examples of how they routed their braied lines, this being 2 piece kit, i.e. no OEM joint on the bottom yoke...

Thanks

« on: 06 June 2015, 12:32:27 pm »
My front sprocket is show here, there were comments on an older thread it is worn, and after a bit or research i think it is as well....

I intend to replace it and also the chain and rear sprocket as i know it should be done as a set....

Any comments and also any one used the +1 front sprockets - real noticable affects....????

FZS600 Fazer / Brake Fluid on Pads...
« on: 04 June 2015, 08:37:21 pm »
So - i have been doing lots on my brakes, and have new pads for all calipers, i have been using the olds ones while practicing bleeding.....

I want to make sure i do not get any oil on the new pads - what are people opinions on what to do IF you get oil on new pads...

Bin them or can you do anything to safely salvage them - i have read all sorts....but not sure what the general consensus is...

I cannot disconnect it and need to...

FZS600 Fazer / Fire!!!
« on: 29 May 2015, 10:17:20 am »
So no fire, just recently i aquired some old fire extinguishers....and i wandered does any one else have one handy in case their DIY on their bikes takes a turn for the worse?

I have never had major issues, but once i did have some fuel spill on a hot engine - my own fault, nothing went up, but had it then i may have wished i had an extinguisher...

« on: 24 May 2015, 12:41:55 pm »
Anyone using End of Bar mounted mirrors here - and dropped the faired ones?

I know i can get some screw in mirrors that locate into the level assemblies...but what are the mirrors that screw on the end of the bars like - in terms of visibility, if they were all you had?

FZS600 Fazer / Kick Stand Removal...
« on: 20 May 2015, 08:23:47 am »
So i decided to get my kick stand cleaned up....cannot ride the bike for a few weeks at least...

One bolt was needed to be removed with a socket - here you can see it from my point of view lying on my side

Once i un-did it a little parts of it rotated around and the spring which was not under any real tension  was easy to remove....

Cleaned up the parts....with some spare brake component cleaner - worked well  :) , be careful with anything like that around the switch as its got some rubber bits....and i don't think it plays nice...

Painted most of the stand with hammerite but not the smooth machined bearing surface...

NOW something i am still looking at - here you can see the Sidestand Switch - its mucky and i am considering taking it off, but i think i cannot get to one of the screws for the crankcase...

Here you can see i am pushing the switch in - something the stand normally does with a projection it has on it...

Will update if i get it off and once back together....

FZS600 Fazer / Snapped Exhaust studs part II
« on: 18 May 2015, 08:42:45 pm »
***** WILL AMMEND INITIAL POST AS I CHANGE THINGS OR HAVE QUESTIONS ******

Not any more - updates inline with latest posts, else landing page is a monster in terms of pulling down images...

18/05/2015

So - during the nightmare of my last advneture into snapping my exhaust studs i purchased a spare engine as at one point i never thought i would get the current one back into order....i did....but this thread is now about the spare...

I purchased it with 12,000 miles and 1 snapped engine stud already.....plan was to get the studs removed professionally and replace with stainless steel etc...

Well i managed to get 5 studs out with a campingaz torch, leaves 3 that need drilling out, 2 have snapped flush, one has snapped arkward but that was already done...

Point of the thread is just to document what it turns out like and show some pics of the engine for bits people may not have seen  :)

Also any advice and comments good or bad, welcome....

Here it is - little dirty...

Made sure to make notes of current timing chain alignement - did not do that on my current engine!

Note the back marks - and also Cylinder 1 is at TDC on the Compression stroke - cams face outwards as opposed to inwards

Head off...

When i tapped away the Cylinder Head, i distubed the Cylinder, oil leaked out....as can be seen here!

So decided to remove the oil delivery pipe and coolant hoses and to remove the cylinders as well.....

Timing chain...and intake side guide.....

And the cylinders....

Off to the engine shop tommorow to leave the head there, once the 3 studs are removed i shall be fitting a stainless steel set  :)

QUESTIONS

Why so much deposits on the pistons.....????

19/05/2015

Head at engine shop - 2 studs snapped flush, and one was already hacked off, 4th one although removed, might be some issue with the thread so most likely 3-4 repairs - should be within a week...

Looking at these for replacment studs: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Exhaust-Stud-Set-for-Yamaha-FZS600-Fazer-1998-2003-/331542724598?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d317c7ff6

Unless i can find a Dome Nut variant - will just put my own dome nuts over the top of these...

20/05/2015

So got some deposits off the pistons....stubborn stuff left, used a bit of brake part cleaner i had left and a cloth...

Pic of the state of the cylinders bores....

24/05/2015

Starting to clean things a little more now with some natural degreaser, safe around rubbers etc and plastics not too abrasive

Cooling pipes came off ok, no issues there, there is some rust on the end of the pipe i may try to remove...

Degreaser seems ok as well : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006ZZ4AHS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Also noted these spark plugs, double electrode type as opposed to what i am used to seeing based on my current installed engine...

Is it a good or bad thing to have this type verusus the single electrode????

25/05/2015

The bores after  alittle wipe down....

26/05/2015

Valve compressing kit arrived - looks ok and feels strong enough....shall post some pics when i mess around with the spare head i have...

FZS600 Fazer / Speedo Position and Cable Routing
« on: 16 May 2015, 09:16:08 pm »
So - i have fitted some new headlights and indicators to my bike.....and with some sound advice from some helpful foccers.....think i can wire it up fine ( cheers Sinto!)

Now the dilema i am in.....the speedo i have....is this...

I am not too concerned with the process of making a new wiring loom for the front end - have a few spare base ones and will chop and change as needed etc...

The issue is routing the wire and where to put the speedo....mainly is it a bad idea to have it on the handle bars so its moving all the time or not.......??????

Any one who has added a custom speedo etc would appreciate input

FZS600 Fazer / Center Stand clean up...
« on: 12 May 2015, 07:40:56 pm »
So i decided to continue taking my bike to bits and cleaning/breaking/fixing bits....center stand is current object of affections....

I made sure i was wearing some goggles in case the spring shot off....

it was a little tricky to get the bolts off but a quick heat with a torch sorted that - then i had to remove the nuts and then knock one of the bolts out - the one OPPOSITE the side where the spring attaches..

once that bolt was out i wiggled it around a bit till the tension was off the spring and then it fell to bits and i could knock the other bolt out

Here it is before hand:

And...after some attention with wire brush and wire drill bits as well as some degrease....

And

Almost painted it with my exhaust paint i was using at the weekend but then realised how do i take the center stand for a spin  :lol

Any recommendations on what to paint this with?

FZS600 Fazer / Braided Lines...
« on: 09 May 2015, 10:43:29 pm »
I don't understand something...

Braided line packs such as this - which im looking at....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wezmoto-Stainless-Steel-Braided-Hoses-Kit-Yamaha-FZS600-Fazer-1998-2003-/141086727834?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20d96c9e9a#ht_3212wt_1214

Why is there only 2 front lines....

It seems like you only use braided lines from the junction to the calipers - do you not use braied lines from the cylinder to the "T"

I though the whole point was to remove any give or play in the rubber hoses so why not have a braided line from the master cylinder as well...?

Might be missing something here?

FZS600 Fazer / How do i detach the headlight wiring loom....
« on: 09 May 2015, 05:26:52 pm »
So simple question, it looks obvious, unwind the tape or cut it?

I don't see any other way, there is a similar holder on the main wiring loom as well under thank....am i missing something of i just cut/un-wrap?

FZS600 Fazer / Finally getting my downpipes painted...
« on: 09 May 2015, 12:45:39 pm »
So after the stud snapping nightmare....finally getting around to the real reason.....painting the downpipes with rust off  :lol

I used some wire brush drill bits to get the rust off, and then rubbed them down with some coarse wet and dry - with no water, cleaned them with degreaser as well

I am using this:

Plan to re-attach to the bike and leave it running to let them "cure"

Drying at room temp before i put them back on the bike

FZS600 Fazer / Brake Caliper Pistons
« on: 01 May 2015, 08:34:38 pm »
I have been trying to clean my calliper pistons....

I don't know if I need to be concerned about the amount of light rust/gunk on some of them...

The brakes have always worked but there has been a binding issue ( slight ) since I got the bike ( 20,000 miles 2001 years, 5 owners...)

Have got some stuff off them, and have used a razor to carefully tease off some rust, but I cannot rotate them and I have read I should be able to...do not know if that's the case...

FZS600 Fazer / Timing Chain Tensioner Gasket...
« on: 30 April 2015, 08:31:51 pm »
So I had found small oil leak from the timing chain tensioner, I have got it out now and I notice I neglected to remove some bits of gasket that were on it, the rest of the gasket is absent...

So I now have no gasket....and I have searched the parts catalog and cannot see it listed and also in the service manual its no listed in terms of part number...

Anyone know how to get one?

FZS600 Fazer / Replacing the instrument panel...
« on: 30 April 2015, 04:32:41 pm »
So I would like to remove the fairing and put a new headlight on, change the instrument panel etc....whilst the bike has been without cowling for a while in the garage I actually prefer it!

Has anyone looked at these before http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/db-01r-multi-function-200-p.asp

Its a good price and I am not sure it will be too hard to fit
