FZS600 Fazer / Cost to fit 2 tyres???
« on: 14 May 2013, 12:26:38 pm »
Just checking whats generally speaking a decent price to fit front& back tyres please???

Ive found the site below which gives a good spread of prices for a variety of tyres but if i go to some local fitters they'll no doubt give me the price including fitting so would be good to spot whether they're being a bit cheeky.

Cheers

FZS600 Fazer / Starting up without throttle.
« on: 14 April 2013, 10:19:54 am »
Reading davebo's post in the thou section entitled-starting on the button, ive made a few observations recently on when my 600 has & hasnt started on the button.

My bike has always started on the button, choke first thing but no throttle at any time. 8)

After recently fitting my K&N air filter it no longer did it,now needed just a little throttle. :\

Then fitted my simmi end can yestaerday & hey presto....back to starting on the button again :)

So taking the ability to start on the button as a general indicator of being in tune.

What is my pea brain deducing-well could it be that with the k&n there was greater air flow into the bike but not enough out through the standard exhaust & it was enough to upset the balance.

Then getting the new exhaust has increased the flow out through the exhaust enough to match the air flow in & is now back in harmony??????????

FZS600 Fazer / My birthday SIMMI end can.
« on: 13 April 2013, 01:09:26 pm »
Well then, whilst everyone is falling out over trivia like politics & death, i've been focusing on the important things in life....like fazers.....& bling!!! 8)

So my missus got me a Simmi end can for my birthday, plus she put me through my test last year :eek ..she's a keeper alright...along the lines of the famous Heather (shouldnt Heather become the patron saint of fazers :lol )

After a bit of helpful advice from darrsi & jones the steam i finally got it on.

I went for the same size as the original,im young but old fashioned regards exhausts,i like a big set of cans ;)

I liked the gumpf about simmi & the reviews i have seen have been full of praise & it certainly looks & feels like quality.

Its pissin wi rain down here so ive only started it up in the garden but wow am i impressed with the sound even with the baffle still in,very sweet indeed.cant wait to go out for a blast.& here's a pic :D

Mornin all,Ive just been trying to fit my simmi end can but the link pipe doesnt want to go on as far as the original was.

The link pipe has 3 slots cut outta it for expanding but it only goes on as far as the end of the slots (which makes sense),about an inch instead of going flush up the end of the tapered part of the downpipe like the original,im guessing this is normal,i cant push it on any further & it wont twist on any further but it doesnt seem like allot of a join & its annoying it doesnt go up to the end of the down pipe, plus the sticky out triangular piece on the link pipe (guessing is a stop for the centre stand or somethin) is quite close to the rear brake torque arm.

Anyone got any suggestions please?

Oil time.
Oil time.

So after waiting & waiting & waiting for some nice weather i finally decide enough's enough & drag the bike outta the shed,5 months later :eek .

Reading all the controversy about starting or not starting a stored bike up periodically, back in october i opted for battery out & indoors, brimmed tank wi super unleaded, stuck a bottle of fuel stabiliser in ( which actually ended up being an additive that protects against ethanol & not stabiliser,oh well :\ ), i didnt start the bike once in all that time & i figured if there was water in the oil from storage shed condensation then it was prob best not to start it,seems logical, happy days.but i was still cacking myself about making the wrong decision & my carbs being all gummed up & glazed & having endless problems.

Thanks to the foccer fold i also plucked up the courage to do my own oil change, im not that practical so it was a bold leap but thanks everyone for all the step by step guides & answers to silly questions.ordered some castrol power,(foced up on ebay though & got 10w30,instead o 40 but ill take risk wi that considering its never likely to get hot in britain this year anyway :( )official yamaha sump plug, k&n filter, got all my little funnels & old oil container as per the pic.........&

I managed it :D :D 8) .

For any other newbs considering giving it a go then its time to hang from the honesty tree & fess up to the mistakes i made:-

-i stuck my bike on the side stand as it gives more lean for the oil coming out, originally it was all set up nicely on the main stand but i changed to side stand last minute.because my bikes jacked up with modified wishbones it leans way over on the side stand & clearance for my oil container & funnel was minimum, as such i ended up fiddling about, being awkward & spilling oil all over the path :'( ,got most of it in the end.i think next time ill start on main stand then sit on the bike & lean it over for the last drops.

-the original filter doesn't have the spanner attachment on it like the k&n,i'd read folks here saying they use gardening gloves & take it off by hand.this wasn't possible for me, my knuckles were rubbing against the downpipes & stopping me get the leverage.i opted for the messy, screwdriver hammered through the filter to get it off,i wont need to next time with the k&n.

-sump plug, im not exactly sure how tight it's supposed to be so i got it tight then gave a good half turn on top.silly statement time-the washer is described as a crush washer, does this mean that the plug should be tightened until it crushes the washer right up flush???,the old plug seemed to have the washer melted onto it,bit confused???????

After all that, choke on full,2 seconds max on starter & it fired into life 8)  yes!!!!!!!!!cash back!!!!!

Coughed & spluttered for a few seconds, almost stalled....i left it be....couple more seconds & it started picking up....few more seconds & it ran perfect & i slowly eased off the choke to zero, sat ticking over nicely.

Took it out to quickly test it out....in all my summer clothing, ended up doing 60 miles....it ran like an absolute dream!!!stonking!

Can just about feel my hands again brrrrrr!!!!

It must be a  :faz

FZS600 Fazer / Supreme bike set up suggestions required please.
« on: 27 February 2013, 11:14:45 pm »
I would like to try a different suspension & tyre set up this year & am interested to hear your thoughts.Last year i jacked the bike up, went with the  stiffest setting on the rear shock & had 2 lines showing on the front shocks, the bike felt precise, turned in quickly but was a little bit jumpy & i was bounced off the seat a few times.I am aiming for a bit of speed & fun, not particularly doing any slow speed touring.Im circa 15 stone.

I got thinking about the way i corner in the car & i tend to hold wide on the corners, wait until the suspension has gone all the way over before powering out or around the corner & i quite like that bit of sponginess the suspension gives me rather than being stiff as a board on solid suspension, ive no doubt the stiff suspension is in reality better for cornering but the comfort of the soft suspension makes me feel more comfortable and thus more relaxed and feeling in control so maybe i am quicker on that type of set up.

back to bikes then, anyone got any suggestions for softening things up whilst still being able to do some spirited riding???

i was running 36psi front and 42psi rear i believe after reading the article on here somewhere about this universal tyre pressure for all bike tyres being just that but perhaps that's part of the problem.

open to suggestions, anyone of similar weight & their set ups please, apologies if it's a bit de-ja-vu.thanks  8)

FZS600 Fazer / My fancy/shiney torque arm.
« on: 15 February 2013, 10:14:55 am »
Hey peeps, a while back i got a really nice torque arm made up & i havent seen another one like it,so in true foccer fashion here's the details if you'd like one.lets try a couple o pics first though:-

The guys name is herb,he's a one man band so dont expect mega fast turnaround.

He can do the fazer infill writing in different colours.

If you tell him Fraser sent you he'll know what its all about, i did ask him and he's happy to do more.

His email is info@dustyherb.com

He doesnt have them on his website so he must not have marketed them very well, what better way than through here.

Cheers

General / New style exhausts-they look crap!
« on: 31 December 2012, 03:38:23 pm »
I happened to be looking at a cbr 250r on the net last night during the night shift and i cant believe how rubbish the exhaust made it look, whats the score with these new style futuristic judge dredd exhausts,

Im guessing its to do with emissions and catalytic converters but surely they could come up with better than that,

Anyone know how easy these new bikes are to just take off the can and swap with a more traditional looking can or does it that generally mess up the engine management.

Its the one thing putting me off even considering a newish bike in the future.

General / Winter trailie recomendations?
« on: 16 December 2012, 02:34:10 pm »
Thought i could get away with being just a fair wx biker but now getting withdrawls.thing is although my fazers only worth just over a grand i still think its too nice to  use through the winter.

Been thinking about a trailie type bike to potter about on back and forward to work etc, would love a suzuki drz400 but they're still about 2k,

Anyone got any recomendations on a good bike for about 1k, top of the list is reliability, something simple,4 cylinder, i take it a 125 will be a struggle as im 15 stone, height not an issue as im 5 11,be good if it could do some green laning also.

Any advice appreciated.

General / On bike cameras-do they change the way you ride?
« on: 08 December 2012, 11:49:18 am »
I was discussing with a mate about having a camera on the bike/helmet etc and my worry is that it would change my riding as in playing up to the camera, getting worthy material to look at etc, like making silly mistakes on a driving test when you know someone is watching.

Has anyone had one and stopped using it for this reason or do you generally forget that its there after a while.

I enjoy watching lewis's antics on his fazer,he seems to be used to it although lewis maybe you get a bit occupied with commentating etc but then the police do running commentary and maybe it makes you more aware, the footage where you round a corner to an arctic all over the road is a reminder to all about hazards.

FZS600 Fazer / Brasso
« on: 07 November 2012, 09:13:29 pm »
Just found a full tin of brasso

Anyone used it on bike bits before?

Says excellent results on brass, copper, stainless steel and chrome so was thinking about doing the foot peg brackets/hangers as they look a bit tatty but im not sure about the laquer as it is patchy/part worn off,

Suppose the best way to find out is give it a try but if anyones had that idea before and failed i'd appreciate the advice.

FZS600 Fazer / Disconnecting battery for the winter?
« on: 19 October 2012, 01:48:07 pm »
Deciding not to go down the optimiser route for a few reasons, a-they cost money, b-i dont have power out to my shed and c-i wouldnt trust leaving a battery in the house charging up,

So ive quickly googled the subject of what to do whilst the bike is lay up for the winter and ive seen mention of disconnecting one of the terminals.

Anyone a guru on the subject of batteries, would this suffice or should i disconnect both terminals?, also if exposed to sub zero temps for a while is it better to store it in the house somewhere,

I was kinda thinking take the bike for a decent blast to get a bit of charge in there then take battery out and store it in the under stairs cupboard until about april time.

General / Rusty fuel tanks-whats the solution
« on: 26 September 2012, 10:24:35 am »
Ive read a fair few storys about internal rust in fuel tanks due to age/dodgy modern fuel/condensation etc, i also note that a brand spanking tank from yamaha is nigh on 800 quid,

So in the future when all remaining fazers are worth a grand, an 800 quid part isnt really feasible to most

So whats our options?,has anyone discovered an amazing sealant our are these only temporary fixes for a couple of years,

Is anyone into classic bikes that has a solution, what sort of price are we talking

I wouldve thought someone with the right skills could make a killing from restoring tanks from old bikes
And if indeed it is modern fuel thats partly responsible then business should be increasing all the time.

General / Doing up an old bike - is it economical
« on: 14 September 2012, 08:56:25 pm »
Before i get carried away spending money on my fazer i just thought id check your opinions on something - is it more economical doing up an old bike or buying a newer one?, ie if i spend a couple o grand getting brakes, suspension, exhaust etc on top of the 2 grand i paid for it, will it be a much better bike than if i just got a 4 grand bike in the first place?,

I love my fazer, its more than ill ever need and i cant see me wanting rid but whats the limiting factor, seems like parts are easy to come by but how longs the frame likely to last though under mostly dry conditions and stored in the shed?,are there any gadgets/devices/gizmos lurking under the bodywork that if they go wrong start to be uneconomic to replace?

Perhaps being the fazer club the answers may be biased but maybe some of yous have got some other proper old bikes as a reference.cheers!

Whilst giving the bike an acf 50 shower today I noticed some shiny (ish) arms that seemed to recognise from somewhere as being bike jack up or lowering devices, can anyone tell me what colour the originals are and how to tell if they are jack up or lowering type,I'm about 6 foot and the bike doesn't seem that low to me,the ones on the bike are gold, they just stuck out as not being quite dirty enough to be original.

93
So I ride about 120 miles up to glencoe and the bike is fine and gets a good blast, I top up the tank for return journey, mpg is fine, on way back we pull in for a quick break and I smell petrol then notice fuel pouring out from the hoses underneath the bike, bike runs but gets progressively worse and vibration felt through pegs with dash sometimes vibrating also, example overtaking in 3rd is a lull, then picks up until mid rev range lull again before apparently then going full power at high revs like a v-tec kicking in on my old type-r Honda car, so I get home eventually by skin of my teeth and use a full tank of fuel in 100 miles, half generously donated to the ozone, the carb floats and seals have already been replaced by Yamaha after it did similar in my dads garage, I wonder if anyone has suffered the same, could it be the floats again or could it be simply a bit of dirt got in from the tank etc, it's not like it happened straight after sitting in garage for a while as it ran fine all the way up and it got a good thrashing.its in the yam dealers again so I'll see what they come up with and post result.
