Title: My Fazer so far
Post by: thunderpantz on 24 September 2013, 07:30:22 am
HI all, still relatively new to the whole 'biking scene' but just thought i'd share a few pictures of my current project :)

Bought my Fazer nearly 4 weeks weeks ago, and although it was in an 'okay' condition for a 13 year old bike, I felt like it was missing something and it didn't feel like mine. Here are some photos (apologies for the poor quality) of when I bought it:

The bike came with a newly fitted D.I.D Chain and sprocket, Givi Wing Rack, Givi top box, Oxford intelligent heated grips 9 months Tax and MOT and a little over 40k miles for the princely sum of £750! Got the bike back and one of the lads who works for me (ex motorbike instructor and mechanic) gave it the once over and the thumbs up on the engine. The paint work wasn't in a fantastic condition and it must have been dropped at some point as the headlight fairing was a mismatched colour but nothing that couldn't be sorted. So it seems I got myself a little bit of a bargain!

So then I move on the last week, after talking to a friend, who powder coats for a living, he was saying he wants to get into spraying and wanted some little projects. He's refurbed alloys and sprayed various other bits and bobs. Being as the bike was just my toy I've taken all the fairing off, given them to him and said 'have fun'.

As you can see, i've gone for a Dark Grey Metallic/Anthracite (the actual colour is Honda Graphite Grey) and the finish is awesome. He started on the tank yesterday, so fingers crossed it will all be back together ready for the weekend.

Watch this space :)

Yet again proof of 'its not what you know, its who you know'
Good choice of colour, you going to get the wheels matched?
40,000 is nothing on a bike these days, my last fzs had 120,000 when I disposed of it.

Plenty of people will be after your wingrack if you don't want it, good results from the for sale section on here.

As I say to everyone- spend Some money preferably on a set of engine protection bars, or at the minimum decent crash bungs, after getting all that work done it'll be a shame to ruin it if you drop it!

Other than that, have fun!

Agreed, lovely colour and a cracking finish! Going to look a sweet bike fella.

Reckon your mate needs to do another bike though just to hone his skills so to speak. He probably wouldn't feel right after doing just one bike and then offering his services as chargeable.

As such, I would be glad to offer my bike up for his ongoing re-training. I know it's a risk but a worthy cause in the current economic climate.

Let me know when he wants it  :D

just out of curiosity how much do you guys reckon a tank respray like that would cost normally?

Funny you say that. Some one he knows (who wasn't aware of his particular skillset) has just paid £150 to have the tank done.

Picked up all the parts last night. Yay!!

Boxeye centrestands are different to foxeye's, guess they should fit though if the mounting points are the same which I guess they are. Might be worth checking though.

Nice paintjob, love the colour. Like Punkstig said get some protection, I had a full respray (in a similar colour actually) and within a month someone had knocked it over and trashed the front fairing. That was with bungs, got bars now!

Out of interest. How much would the wing rack be worth, minus the indicators (had a slight assembly error!)

Quick Update, decided to ditch the wing rack as I never used the thing. He's a quck pic before he was put away for the next few weeks.

Many thanks for all the replies chaps, really is appreciated. Still got a fair bit of work to do to make it mine, and as I keep making jobs for my self, I best get a jog on with it!

So in the spirit of 'pulling my finger out', first quick update:

Edit: sorry, just seen your other thread which says it's one of the metal unions you're replacing.

Well after snapping one of the infamous exhaust studs an executive decision has been made. New MOTAD pipes were collected this morning. Easter weekend, the jobs getting done. Decided i'm not going to FOC about. Dremel the nuts off, heads coming off and replacing all the studs.

Off to ebay I go to get studs and head gasket :)

Having got some spare time today, i've set about having a fettle with the bike. First up, I've swapped out all the engine bolts with new stainless replacements:

Looks much better imo, next plan, swap rocker cover over for a 'cleaner' unit :)
Title: Re: My Fazer so far

Rocker cover replaced and also fitted new front indicators to match the rear:

Spot the difference:

New front indicators:

And how he stood after a couple of hours:

(ignore the black mark on the down pipe, exhaust is ever so slightly blowing fron the head, pushed a hot down pipe in with a microfiber.... end result is melted microfiber. All gone now though)

Next job is to re seat the downpipes and fit new gaskets again and sort the brakes; new pads, braided lines and fluid.

Title: Re: My Fazer so far

My next job was supposed to be brakes.... then I had an interesting packing from noggy

Inside it were Renthals, Bar Ends and some elusive coolant hoses. Yesterday I set about doing the pipes

Anyway, you get the hint. It was all going so well until literally the final part. Putting the coolant plug back in:

Which as you can see, took it upon itself to snap. At this point, I said a few swearies, down'ed tools and called it a day. I was miffed  :'(

So Today came, feeling fresh and ready to go:

TADA!! Got it out! So, phoned 3 local Yammy dealers and nothing, they don't keep spares and would be a 2 week wait. Cue me going through the dad's shed looking for bolts that 'might just do it'

And after a bit of jigery pokey with a dremal:

And this is how he stood earlier. Haven't had chance to fit the bars as the car is going for it's MOT in a sec (wish me luck!)

Thunderpants....your bike rocks :guitar :guitar :guitar

Im quute impressed with those hoses, it's a shame that a few of them arent visible allot of the time and the bike needs a few more blue touches.....if i'm honest i went overboard with the blue levers but the blue bar ends will add a spot to the upper right portion, then theres the blue spots for lower right, the hoses for the centre.

But i really do think a splash of blue on the lower left portion would complete without going ott.......& what better way than with a blue spot thou caliper 8) 8) 8) ......i dont have one.....but it wiuld look the biz.

& i also think you should paint the plastic frame plugs the same Blue.....woola 8) .

& the upgraded rear grab rail would modernise things.......ooooh i have one of those for sale ;)

& i might have another small addition you could be interested in....nowt special but ill show you tomorrow.

Grab rail you say.... im interested. And cant wait to see you special something ;)

Lookey lookey mr pants :photo

Upgraded grab rail in black...a few scratches but generally a nice item in black (youd need to check they still fit the older bikes)..........£15

And what else?......these 2 luxurious and fresh looking side panels.........complete with decadent yamaha tuning fork dome stickers.......& pro bolt allen bolts.....woooooooooooooohhhhhhhh 8) 8) 8) .........£5 each side bargain.

Plus postage whatever that comes to.

What you reckon?

So, the winter has come and gone and today I thought I'd start giving the bike some love. Bought a set of HEL lines and new pads to go on and decided to have a bash at fitting them. Me and my trusty haynes manual were good to go.

Safe to say, things didn't go well. Set about doing the rear brake first. Now I should mention the rear brake has always been 'questionable' and to get it through the MOT a fair old amount of force had to be applied (imagine an 18st guy bouncing on the pedal). I'm no mechanical expert but I know when something is focced.

Pretty sure theres meant to be a rubber seal somewhere and that the pistons are meant to move with a bit of a push? Alas, there is neither. Well, theres bits of a seal...

So, focced?

Finally replaced my failed rear caliper today with one from a TRX850... my word, the stopping power of that thing is awesome!

Does the rear caliber from the TRX-850 fit without modifications?

You have to replace the caliper hanger too. But other than that its a bolt off bolt on job.

You do know that those two thin hoses to the left of your oil filler cap don't belong there don't you ?

When you route the hoses to the picture bimbam posted if you follow where they are going underneath the bike you should see a metal loop that they should just reach that holds them

Been a while since I updated this! Have been hectic the last few month with work and the like and have totally forget about my beloved Fazer. Have had no time to ride, maintain or enjoy the ownership :(

Think he's going up for sale soon...
