Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Warp speed
« on: 17 November 2014, 08:34:43 pm »

Just a little feel good message about the speed of the old Gen 2.

Fair to say it still isnt the ideal bike for me but that doesnt mean that it doesn't make me grin when i ride it.

One of my favourite things about it - Getting ready for an overtake and sitting at circa 6k revs in 3rd gear and then going full throttle all the way passed and straight to the redline......& then 4th..........foccccccccccccccccc!!!!! 8) .......so quick and such a thrill...only overtaking i know but foc me there cant be anything quicker than it surely......you seem to get by a car in less than a second it's ace.......clearly allot of car drivers cant quite comprehend how quickly you'll be passed them.

That is all. :D

Ok this is a tyre thread......... :2guns with a minor twist i suppose......noggys sure are inquisitive.

But I'm just throwing it out there as a discussion thread if anyone fancies it. (It is winter season after all)

Last night at work i was reading MCN campaign about pot hole UK and i agree that it is fair to agree that our roads are well and truly FUBAR. I at least get the joys of some decent Welsh roads which are far better than the average English roads but that's not totally true as most of the minor roads are still trashed.

Sometimes when I'm in my car car i even think to myself that should i just buy an old 4x4 with big ass suspension as the average journey these days is a pretty rough ride, but i much prefer a sporty ride on the corners and a car is still best at the moment.

The same applies on the bike as i do like a decent corner and the FZ1 is a pretty precise weapon on a fast and open sweeper......but there are less and less fast sweepers available that aren't pot holed, patched or cracked to bits and if you hit the wrong shit mid bend it could be end of.

So what's the only thing holding you to that shit house of defective tarmac.......the tyres right..... :think

So i can see how slicks are good on a nice dry and smooth track....& actually my thoughts are currently excluding wet weather as i "try" to only ride dry roads.....and so the road sports tyres that are pretty much the slicks of road riding are supposed to be the bees knees......but are they really all that applicable any more?

I know lots of guys go for sports touring tyres but that mainly seems to be because they want longevity which i'm not all that interested in either as I'm talking about 1 full summer season of good performance and then change them.

What i'm getting at is this......what's really the best performing tyre for 2014/2015 roads in dry conditions, for 1 summer season only?

If you said to someone........excellent and smooth well surfaced and warm tarmac.....dry....then they'd say  a sports road tyre so diablo 3 or whatever.....soft, sticky, hardly any tread......but when a soft sticky tyre hits a rough patch then how does it behave?, perhaps it is still the best tyre i really don't have a clue thats why I'm asking.

If you said to that same person......off road then they'd no doubt say a knobbly but why are knobblys knobbly lol.....to say "because you get more grip" i think simplifies it all a bit too much.....is it to give more grip? or is it really to stop the wheel sinking into mud? or is it to get rid of the water which I'm saying isn't applicable in my ideal tyre anyway? (any crossers on here?, MX, not cross dressers :biker !)....but riding a knobbly over dry rocky stuff i imagine the knobbles also absorb some of the pressure or impact of the ruts and stones.....or perhaps they distribute the
Pressure over a wider area as the rubber knobbles squish over them so what does that mean in terms of a rough road exactly?

Dont ask why I've drawn the comparison between road and off road.....i just have.....i am only a noggy  :groan i suppose they are the extremes but perhaps it isn't a good comparison.....like helicopters and jets.....both in the sky...do different things....its just a thought provoking idea thats all.......thinking outside the box n all that.

Is there such a thing as a modern day road knobbly.....a mix between the 2......big tread and handles on a turn yet when it hits a rut or a dodgy patch it also absorbs some of the energy whilst maintaining the same level of grip?......or would yous argue that this is the nature of a sports tourer tyre.....if so then which one and give examples of when a tyre has saved your bacon

Mmmmmmmmmmm........Bacon!!!!!! :b

Events, Meets, Ride outs etc / Sunny spells in Wales
« on: 08 November 2014, 08:35:21 pm »

Lets face it........sunny spells is the best that Wales is gonna get for another 6 months before it is plunged into the depths of Mordor....eternal darkness and and wet stuff.

Im not even organising a rideout but i will be going out........my battery needs a charge plus i wanna run everything up to temperature for a couple hundred miles before a good ol winter wash and polish n stuff.

But i strongly suggest that every foccer gets out in Wales tomorrow and spreads the cheer.........and catches those sunny spells :sun :sun :sun

29
I've got possible options for next year......keep my thou.........or trade in the thou for something else.

If I keep it then i'll be wanting a big'ish service done just for peace of mind as I have very limited service history and the state of the old air filter was worrying....the oil is still squeaky clean though. So that's oil, coolant, Valve clearances...plus I need new tyres.

If I trade the bike in then I'm thinking I still need new tyres and i'll get an oil and filter change (already just got a K&N and a new battery)....i'll run the bike for half of next season after it comes outta winter hibernation.... to get my moneys worth and enjoy the bike a bit before chopping it in.

my main conundrum is this - if I do trade the bike in with a dealer and I've got basically no worthwhile service history....is it better for me to get a dealer service done anyway prior trade in (oil, coolant, valves checked) or am as I suspect very much not likely to recoup this money anyway and just get bottom book price on the trade in?.....are dealers likely to hum and ha about my lack of service history or will they be more likely to bite my hand off because they're getting another deal?

I only paid £3500 for the bike but it has 35k miles so I'm not realistically expecting too much for it as trade in...im thinking ill end up getting along the lines of £2500 for it no doubt one way or another because lets face it they'll want a profit on it and maybe sell it for circa £3300 via their forecourt IMHO.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 08 FZ1 fairing decals.
« on: 13 October 2014, 10:24:57 pm »

My flymo attacked my bike in the shed a while back....i think it was a turf war :b .........turns out i got lucky as it mainly hit the decal on the front fairing but it's a big scratch through the middle & it does my nut in.

Here's the trouble...it's an FZ1 stickered model which i think means it was originally an import and searching on google i cant find any replacements.

Does anyone know a source for these decals....official ones would be good.

If i cant find one then i've spied with my little eye some motografix decals but they're nigh on 60 foccin squid :eek .....but they will at least do away with the original decals and be a mod of the smallest order.

Ideally i dont think my fairing warrants a £60 upgrade as it has a small crack under the indicator so it's hardly as if i can say oh the motografix kit will protect my minted fairing so the original decal would be ideal.

Any ideas???......cheers.

General / Crash investigation outcomes.
« on: 27 September 2014, 07:25:57 pm »

I've mentioned this a couple of times within other posts but no luck yet.

We are supposed to all learn from mistakes...both our own and others and it is good general industry practice for an investigation board to file reports on an incident.....a list of factors and the root cause is identified although usually individuals are not named...then lessons learned are listed and how the incident could have been avoided.

So of all of the bad crashes in Wales last year involving bikes i don't recall ever hearing the outcomes.

The mainstream media are somewhat biased and always report a bike crash with the finger tilting towards the biker....even if they don't say that it is at least inferred with their word choice & exclusion of certain facts........if it is cars involved then it is just a road incident although if a motorbike is involved then a big emphasis is made of the motorcycle.

I've recently come across a map which shows all the crash's but it just briefly lists the vehicles involved and where on the map....that is useless!.

Is there an official government accident report website where we can all view the crashes and what and who was really at fault?.........this would be most useful...much of which is no doubt harrowing.....but bikers aren't always without blame and it would be useful learn from the mistakes of others and come out a better rider......we all hear stories and are constantly told you shouldn't do this this & this but to actually read where this has been proven and from an official and impartial source is of the most benefit.

I also just read that road deaths have jumped in Wales......but injuries are down.......so the silly slow speed stuff is maybe gotten away with via modern safety and technology in vehicles and protection.........but perhaps the faster incidents are indeed much faster than in the past.....& no amount of safety features are helping......more folk are ending up pan bread.

Any ideas?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 2 intermittent starting.
« on: 04 September 2014, 08:39:47 pm »

My Gen 2 has developed an issue whereby sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't.......but it is always turning over. there isn't really any pattern to it, cold, warm, start of the day, end of the day....just really random.

Usually starts within a second of pressing the starter switch and when running all is well.....but when it doesn't want to start it will just keep turning over until i switch off the ignition and try again.....sometimes 2 attempts, sometimes 3 or 4 and then it fires up...then next time i stop then it might just start within a second of the first attempt again.

When it has its funny turn then the engine trouble warning light flashes off and on until it fires and then it goes off.

Initial power up on the dash initiation is always the same and i always get all the same noises from the bike priming itself etc.

I believe if there was an electrical circuit fault then there is a self diagnosis device fitted and that there would then be fault code displayed where the clock time is usually displayed......i dont have any codes there....just the clock.

Just thought id ask if anyone has any suggestions to give me a head start when i talk to my garage about them checking it out so I'm not completely in the dark as i can do some googling beforehand.

Is the engine light flashing during the turning over normal?....as in on lots of engines cars and bikes you can have dash lights on until the engine starts and then they go out..........or is it genuinely indicating a fault.....if so then why no code???

What are the likely culprits???

I have oxford heated grips fitted and I've heard a few stories about them causing issues with bikes.....could they be the culprit???.....i dont really need them for my summer riding.

I dont have any electrical diagnostic tools....im just after some rough suggestions.....as said once the bike is running it goes well.

Could it just be something as simple as the battery being a bit goosed?

Any suggestions welcomed and listened to.......nobody likes an askhole :lol

Cheers

General / Wales pics.
« on: 03 September 2014, 10:12:10 pm »

About time i got out,  and with the perfect weather this week it was rude not to.

So me & pilgo met up at Aberystwyth and then yesterday we spent the day on some of the more obscure roads......not too fast...loads of stops for photos and refreshments.....no deadlines or mileage targets...just enjoying it....did the old slow road from Devils bridge to the Ellan Valley dams and then North to Llanidloes before again going cross country on a B road and cutting up northwards towards Machynlleth ......then onwards to Corris and beyond.

Seen more lakes than i could shake a shitty stick at really.....also a highlight for me coz im a sad bastard was the RAF hawk training jets flying right over my napper and real close as as i was climbing up the pass towards dollgellau with Cadair Idris mountain as a backdrop.....only a few seconds but really priceless. 8) ....came back down the pass and cut off towards Tywyn and passed the Dolgoch falls and then onwards to Aberdovey.....eventually getting back to Aber.

Stayed overnight in Aber which is a pretty classy place and then set off today up the A44 to Rhayader-Newtown-Beulah-Llandovery and finally home.

So basically im just gloating about my trip but at the same time there aint much good weather left so I'm also doing my bit for the welsh tourism industry......no matter how many times i do that A44 it never fails to amaze me as a biking dream road. 8)

Got a few pics along the way...they really don't do it justice though....thing is that when you get to the real fast roads then the last thing on the mind is taking photos so yous'll have to take my word for it that there's so much more to offer.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 2 Cat
« on: 20 August 2014, 12:21:23 pm »

Decided to take out my baffle outta curiosity......yep....foccin noisy.....my inner demon wants at least 1 spin with it out just to sample it. :evil

However jammed inside the baffle were these bits of metal.....lighweight.....corrugated on one side and smooth on the other side.

I take it this is bits of the cat is it?

I dont know if the cat is even in the exhaust but can someone elaborate on it please....ie does it look like someone has just rammed a screwdriver into it to get rid of it kind of thing and maybe this was some of the leftovers that got blown out and jammed i side the baffle?

Cheers

As above please foccers

I know the brackets themselves are different but is the mounting point that is welded to the front of the bike the same?

Her is the box eye mount for example.

36

Well i didnt expect it to continue to go so smoothly......got all the bolts out easy enough on 3 of the rubbers and then booom!!!,....one of them gets mushed....& subsequent meddling means it is well and truely focced.

The engine will be coming out but whats the best plan of action?...i have a basic cordless power drill and im guessing i need a decent easy out set plus a punch maybe although how much the punch applies to an allen bolt im not sure.

So i know I've not to choose a drill bit too big that ends up obliterating the bolt itself.......do i need a left hand drill bit so as not to further tighten the bolt & if so can i just buy maybe 2 sizes of left handed drill bits on the cheap or most conveniently ie homebase or jewsons or can anyone recommend a decent kit complete with all i need?

Lets be honest i wont be regularly doing this but I'm staying positive and seeing it as a learning process and in future i might have have an idea what to do on any projects or even help someone else out.

They are really tight...heat of the engine etc so i need something that wont in turn snap off and then ill just be throwing the engine in the skip as i cant be focced trying to learn how to drill out an easy out with diamond tipped machinery....just to get a few quid.

Any help appreciated as always.

Cheers

For Sale & Wanted / 2008 FZ1S for sale.£3k.
« on: 26 June 2014, 05:35:04 pm »

:rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes ..........ok i know i know.......but i took the punt.....but the bike is not for me.......it is with sadness that i'm on a whim deciding to sell it........if it sells then thats my biking year finished which i'm sad about but i just think there's a much better chance of me selling it now rather than at the start of winter.

I have my reasons & i'm happy to discuss them on here as a conclusion to my endless what bike should i get saga.

Most will know that i only bought the bike a couple months ago for £3500.......which was a good price......by virtue of Deks bike selling so low & the other competition plus the fact i feel i've had £500 worth of fun from it , i scraped the belly pan overcooking it on a corner & i've added a few thousand miles then the price is £3000.00 earth pounds.....no offers please....if i cant get 3k then i will learn to live with the bike & do some serious fettling to get it just right for me.

Here is the original sellers spec list but please note that the mileage was higher than advertised & is now at 35k.......there is no tom tom plus i dont have the original bits.

Bike is located in South West Wales.

Usual sales jargon applies....ie no test rides without full price in cash in hand first.

Quote

I am looking at selling but cant be bothered taking all the bits off i have put on over the years, the main reason being i know longer have a garage and store the bike which isn't getting out and being used, anyway here is the details as i can best remember, testing the water see if i am pitching at the right price

Unquote

it seems i was also duped about the tax which turned out to be for a Honda so i've just bought 6 months tax which expires 30/11/14......thankfully the bike is legit as i did a text check prior purchase.

What else can i add.......there are a few age/mileage related marks here & there which weren't advertised but i feel should be.......the fuel filler lip was a little rusty so i kurusted it & wipe it with an oily rag......there's a few snipped/taped up wires from the left hand controls...previous owner says from the tom tom which was removed.....i have my doubts about that but to be fair the bike runs flawlessly so i cant see them being an issue.....perhaps further investigation will find that they are snipped as part of a mod with the exup valve or something....i really dont know....any thou guys know about this????

I just did 2000 miles on it on my Scotland trip......it was flawless mechanically and it is a very quick bike, it looks lovely and sounds mean, the oil is still spotless clean through the sight glass.....for an old bike it is a head turner still......it is not perfect....i wont claim that....but for 3k it is a bit of cheap fun & perhaps some more of you 600 boys want to give it a try like i did.

My main reason for sale is this..........i have no more fun on it than on my 600......yes I've edged the tyres and scraped the belly pan & so i must be shifting...but i'm scaring myself shitless in the process & i really dont think i'm  ready for it.....I'm glad i tried & it has been an experience.....but id rather feel quick on a smaller bike even if i'm actually going slower..........ill be looking at something low capacity and naked.....possibly an MT07......but that will be next year.

Anyway here's a couple pics.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / FZ1 suspension set up.
« on: 07 June 2014, 08:17:18 pm »
May I ask some basic questions about the FZ front fork adjusters please.

Just dropped my yokes down the forks by 10mm to improve turn in...I only did 15 miles to work so not enough time to say what difference dropping the forks has made but it definitely worked on the 600....you cant get a cheaper mod than a free mod :)

My main plan now is to sort out the suspension to suit me and I've been doing some basic reading up about it....basically it is a bit too hard for me at the moment...maybe set up more for the track and I've made a few observations........the bike does appear to want to run wide and vague on the front & it is a bit too crashy over even the smallest of bumps front and rear........

I think the preload seems ok for me but I probably need a little less compression up front & a little More rebound.......this would also explain why I don't feel as confident on the brakes with the mighty thou as i'm not getting enough travel under braking so getting less force onto the front tyre....im still having fun on the bike...don't think it is a million miles out but I wanna get it just right.

I'll have a fiddle and see if I can sort out the front end and then move to the Nitron rear.

First Question I suppose is.......can you adjust Compression & Rebound on the FZ1 forks.....mines a 2008....any hints on which way is which ie more or less......I can see what looks like the usual rings which im guessing are still preload....then theres the inner part which looks like it is adjustable..mine is wound almost all the way in...what does that mean then???......so is this just 2 way adjustable...preload and either Compression or Rebound???

39
I know i know :rolleyes

Only ever put 36/42 in the 600 and got on just fine but just wondering whether there's any specific reason why this wouldn't be the case on the heavier FZ1......& yes im a fat bastard.....probably talking 18 stone kitted up......plus im talking a hot sunny day like tomorrow. :sun

I know it's a Boring subject and everyone will have an opinion about it but just seeing if anyone has a magical formula.

Cheers

General / Single day bike insurance.
« on: 28 April 2014, 05:16:53 pm »

Anyone got any reliable contacts for single day bike insurance please???

Im going round in circles....i just need insured to pick up my Thou so only 1 day until i store it & get storage only insurance.

My current policy is only third party..they dont do single day, wont let me add a bike for the remainder of policy.

Mcn has a link...when you go on it there are no bike options....ive been passed around on the phone to no avail.

Every site i look on only offers car or van.

Has something happened recently...perhaps track days have something to do with it but i doubt that........will jeremy beadle pop out from the dead with a film crew. :\

I mean how the foc does anyone legally pick a bike up these days......traders are of course insured for any bike but surely i aint the only person that just needed insured to pick a bike up.

Nowts easy is it, i is a grumpy nog :( :( :(

General / Foccin fireworks!!!!!!
« on: 16 April 2014, 10:17:43 pm »

Don't get me wrong here...i used to go crazy with fireworks when i was a kid and stuff........& in the nineties there was these ace bangers that you could chuck down the street storm drains and they'd bubble away before blasting all the water out the grating & stuff...bits of plastic guttering to make bazookas etc etc.

But being a dick with fireworks as a so called respectable adult is taking the piss!!!....i live in a tiny, sleepy , bungallow filled, wee smelling village..........& some cnut has decided to start letting off airburst rockets at 2200hrs on a foccin Wednesday night in April.

But being even more dickish by leaving long gaps between so everyone thinks its over and you cant see where they're coming from.

Seriously...it wont be kids...they'd have an excuse...they're kids.............it'll be some prick with a fancy job who doesn't indicate & cuts his grass at 0600 on a sunday morning......for 4 hours!!! :evil

Anyway i think it was the next street over.

& a scream of "Cut it out you fuckin bell ends" seems to have worked a treat quite nicely......ahhhh blisss! :smokin

43

Ok i've made my mind up.....when i get back from my Scotland trip in June i'm gonna strip the noggyfighter..an MOT'd & well loved bike that took a tumble....it is sad to strip her....but even sadder to just give her away....1 fazer shall die to keep many others alive.

As it will be a foccers only sale i'll check prices on ebay & breakers etc....then i'll reduce mine so that they are the cheapest (unless some knobber is selling stuff stupidly low, it wont be a charity).

Pic shows bike in all its glory, pic taken a few days ago.

FZS600 Fazer / Noggys price is right...or is it.
« on: 31 March 2014, 09:51:37 pm »

Nice to see you......to see you nice......with wonga!

You've all endured my should i do loads of mods followed by my recommend a new bike thread.....next on the list for end of this season.......how much is the noggyfighter "likely to fetch".....I'm not saying worth...that's a mine field....& target market, where i am located in Wales etc are factors....plus there's so many easily sellable items on it that i fear i may be forced to break the bike & sell everything off...yes a real shame i think...but a financial fact...I'm aware that this will be hard work & the nitty gritty of foccing about with engines etc isn't high on my things i want to do list.

I already know that fazers are going low....i'd say for a good, original & undamaged bike roughly £1500 any day....maybe £1800 tops for the above which has been fully modded up with all the desirable bits & bobs.
Mostly the hacks are around £700 to £800

My bike is better than just a hack though & has lots of tasty bits....it just needs a little tlc....it hasn't been used in all weathers for all of its life, it is low mileage & the engine is really sound.....it just had a bit of a spill...before that it was a really clean example.

So i would describe it as a decent project bike.....& i have most of the bits to complete it.

Bad bits first:-

Has been crashed.....last years off at 40 - 50mph....slid down road on its right side.
No front fairing.
Fairing bracket is bent back in place but not acceptably straight for fairing.
Simmi end can has superficial damage.
Tank has an inch diameter dent which has been touched up.
Right side rear panel has a scrape which is touched up.
Radiator has 1 bolt from side trim snapped off inside hole.( not from crash, from alu blue weak bolt)
Polisport mx headlight with crap light, only got for mot passing.
Rear brake switch needs the wiring attached properly, snapped off when trying to change the brake lever so it is bodged on by me but works perfectly...just 2 wires for someone that's handy with fiddly stuff.

So not that bad...but still nowt special.....but what about the good points:-

Fzs600 2001
Engine is bulletproof, only 14k miles, very powerful, used hard but oil changed every year, Treated with Activ8 additive (no activ8 threads please, it shows i care, i am a believer), gearbox is sound with no jumping or crunching.
Will have a fresh MOT.
Yamaha brake pads & brake fluid, front & rear changed by yamaha dealer about 2k miles ago.

So that's allot of foccin stuff & allot of moneys worth if i sell it all separate.......but how much as a complete package????...i mean pretty much all of the components are there to complete the project......i would say a new second hand tank would be in order & a paint job...& a bit of time & it is an awesome bike again..

To top it off.....the icing on the cake........the chance to buy my snazzy Dave Cooper single bike, collapsible motorcycle trailer( £370 new) used on only 2 scotland trips......i really cant bare another 500 mile 50mph trailer trip plus my new car doesn't have a tow bar & i aint shelling out another 300 quid for one.....all funds required for a new bike.
This could potentially be a fettlers dream package....a project bike....plus a minted bike trailer.....plus tow the bike away using the trailer which overcomes wales distance issue.
What dyas reckon.......what sort of price could i realistically get for all of this...1 package...wham bam thank you mam????...& would anyone seriously consider it by end of summer???.....serious foccers i'd consider a decent deal to just know that the bike was appreciated & i could see its reincarnation......but i dont want the piss taken by anyone who I've never even "virtually" liaised with...some of you have helped me out allot since i've had the bike.
No clambering for individual parts please.....if i do end up having to go down that road i'll pop another post up.
Noggyfighter will still be seen having another few thou miles of fun this year & proving that I'm not selling for any undisclosed reasons or because I'm hiding something.
Cheers

General / Recommend me a bike.
« on: 22 March 2014, 12:44:32 pm »
Well to compliment my other post on the 600 section.....I'm after something different..can i kindly have some recommendations to help me narrow down which bikes i want to test ride.

Ok so my requirements are "ideal world" dreams & i realise there will always be a compromise.

Ok...me...31 year old...6 foot tall & heavy at circa 15 & a half stone before clothing.....long legged.

What riding do i do.....fun & hooning with a little bit of scenery loving...fair weather....usually 200 to 300 miles per ride.....i try to keep speeds down to circa 80mph & keep fun for the corners.....rarely go over the tonne....usually by mistake or briefly to get passed stuff or because my bike is coming on song.....wanna keep my licence.

Type of roads.....Mainly well surfaced fast twisty A roads with consecutive quick left/rights......plus some medium speed imperfect B roads with varying surfaces...the odd dual carriageway just to get to the above roads.

What power delivery do i want....grunt up to 100mph...after that I'm not bothered.....hence i've decided that a large capacity inline 4 isnt for me.....prob a twin...maybe a triple...i want overtaking ability so from 50/60mph to 90mph.....I'm guessing this is in the mid range bracket......I'm not a wheely monster or show off at the traffic lights so i don't even fully need the low down or the top end......just the mid range once im up & moving.....idon't  want snatchyness or surging whilst in mid corner so a smooth throttle or delivery for powering round would be nice.

What quality am i looking at...ok top quality...trick parts....performance stuff....I've done budget..now i want something quality straight outta the box without needing upgrades.

Reliability & maintaing costs.... ok so who doesn't want good reliability..goes without saying really but i don't want something prone to dodgy electrics or the kind of issues that even mechanics struggle to figure out.....i'll be looking more towards dealer servicing apart from the very basic stuff like oil changes & lubing.

Ergonomics.....a big bike....weight isn't too important so long as it doesn't detract from handling.I'm big enough to man handle at slow speed ...but i want the bike looking proportionate to my size....not like an adult sitting on a kids plastic red tractor......i want more leg room so a high seat is fine & i also like to be high up to see over traffic for overtakes & generally give a greater field of vision for obstacles & killer objects (cars at junctions etc).....a pillion seat is good but i don't really care how comfy a pillion is.....wide bars like my renthal 758's are a requirement.....no superbike stance......a fairing isnt important as i do fine on my fighter with no wind protection & if i drop it i want to minimise cosmetic damage to plastics.

Bikes i've narrowed down to so far are as follows:-

Fazer8.....ok I'm trying to give fazers a chance here...mid range probably quite good .....but still revs high & is pricey & is a bit small, lower than my old 600 & prob a bit cramped.....defo the underdog which is appealing.

Fz1 gen 2....excellent handling & performance, but dont look any bigger than the fazer8.....& with all that top end i fear my licence wouldn't last very long.

BMW F800S........seem like nice bikes...grunty....not that big though....not sure about belt drive either.

BMW F800R.......so chain drive...no adjustable front suspension though & looks too tiny.

Yamaha TRX850....nice sensible road power delivery...but sporty riding position..old as the hills...drink oil...& not many around.....probably too costly & full of problems....no thanks...poor trx...do have a soft spot.

Triumph street triple r- oo la la.....what a machine...trick stuff, good power delivery, awesome induction noise, excellent handling....but not a tall bike....& not overly big either but still being european maybe slightly more proportional than a jap bike....one of the main contenders at the moment.

KTM 990 SM.....fits the bill really....big engine but more for the grunt than the top end...i really like these....im just not sure about KTM in general...apparently reliability is now good but it does worry me a little bit.

Aprillia Tuono V4......such lovely machines....someone on here is selling one...fits the bill....again slightly worried about reliability & who is best for dealer access & reliability KTM or Aprillia????

Aprillia Dorsoduro....again as above...supposed to be a more road biased version of the KTM 990.

Any more suggestions or comments most appreciated, have i missed out a whole genre or engine type maybe?

FZS600 Fazer / Not sure what to do.
« on: 21 March 2014, 12:18:18 pm »

I'm really fighting the itch for a newer bike....it is all consuming.

Old fzs is good but there's allot of money still needs spending to get it up to scratch....i really dunno if it is worth doing.

So i need to spend considerable dosh to get it up to scratch & future proof it a bit.

It is my fun bike...for fast A & B roads.....power is good but suspension is lacking.

I dont want to waste time doing on the cheap....i neither have the tools or the expertise....& i've kinda had enough of messing about...i prefer the riding to the fettling...just being honest...minor stuff is enjoyable.

So here's what i reckon i need to get it to where i need it:-

-Front suspensionK tech fork springs, heavier oil & any other bits that would be wise to change on them whilst being upgraded.....i can't find fzs600 specific on the k tech website but looks like £85 for the springs....so after factoring in oil, maybe seals plus fitting costs i reckon safe to assume £180.

-Rear suspension-ok no foccing about.....Nitron made for my weight...nice & easy.....but circa £400....so couple hours labour max guess & I'm looking at circa £450 fitted.

-Chain & Sprockets.....ok they arent terrible but i dont know when they were last done......so a DID gold plus sprockets....change in teeth for more accelaration....lets estimate £160 fitted.......(edit...these are just consumables so shouldn't really be factored in....same as tyres i now need.

-Brakes-i already have new pads & fluid but i also have a nice thou caliper sat in my shed.....so fitting & replace & bleed fluid.....very rough estimate £40.....the hoses are still original so braided lines will be needed...not sure of exact cost of them but lets say £100 for all braking needs.

-Tank.....ok my tank is useable but looks shit as it is dented in & touch up painted over.....£60 off ebay maybe.

-Headlight......i really need rid of the scabby MX headlight....i dunno....something else for £100.

-Carb balance....£40?

So basically i'm looking at £1000 to get the bike up to a good standard........plus another £450 in consumables.....so yep i'm sure it will be an absolute beast & be tip top in the handling stakes....a bit of a A road blaster etc.......but it will still be an old bike subject to the usual bad earths, tps issues, stutters etc etc....but equally may never suffer from these niggles.

Here is my dilemma.

Coz a £1500 spend is allot of wonga.....i could buy a decent fazer for that money...one with consumables already done.....but it still wont handle as good as my modded bike so still not worthwhile doing..but christ i could sell my bike as is easy for £800.....then buy a nice £1500 fazer with new tyres, sprockets, chain etc...& use the £800 to mod it & end up with a stunning bike.

Plus at the mo I'm third party fire & theft.....ill get none of that dosh back if it is nicked or crashed so i really gotta go fully comp & declare loads of mods so higher premiums.

Or do i just plod along....spend £450 on consumables & continue on until next year & buy a newer bike, one that handles well straight outta the box....ok so i'll be looking at 4k for something decent....but it will be nice & new, not crashed, insurable as is.ok so i'd be spending 3k more than just modding my bike.....but if i managed to get 1k for my bike as a good project (needs a new tank & fairing, only done 14k miles)...or stripped for parts if applicable then only 2k difference.

So only really talking 2k effective spend to get a 4k bike....so an FZ8, Fz1, Street triple......seems to make most sense....would like a newer bike....would be different story if my bike was mint & had no damage.

But interested to hear others thoughts on it.

Well i've had fun & games trying to diagnose a strange pinging noise from my front wheel.

On the plus side i have learned how to get my front wheel off & a little bit more of my fazer is realised.

So i have this noise like a stone pinging underneath my front mudguard, usually when moving off but also when coming to a stand still, sometimes 1 ping, sometimes 2 or 3.....once im going i cant notice anything and i don't think it is speed relative...doesn't get faster...i can always hear it loudly & im quite sure i'd notice it whilst at speed & it would be pretty obvious.....so only at slow speed hmmmmmmm!

Whipped my wheel off....checked the speedo sensor dog...all looking good........took the wheel to the garage & they reckon the bearings in the wheel look good...the bike freewheels fine with no obvious brake binding & no indication either on the discs....the steering smoothely moves from lock to lock....basically the bike seems fine apart from this annoying noise.

I've put everything back on with plenty lithium grease & copper ease.....& the noise is still there.

So hard to replicate it without riding under power but tomorrow i'll try find a large & quiet hill so that i can roll down it unpowered & try get it to happen & rule out other stuff.

Got a feeling the fender might just be catching on the tyre sometimes...it is very close.....see pic.....& maybe it needs my weight on it to do so as it doesn't do it while pushing the bike.....no obvious marks on the tyre...or the fender though.

Anyway....still a good day learning some more  :faz  Stuff.....garden slabs came in handy.

FZS600 Fazer / The noggyfighter is alive.
« on: 10 March 2014, 11:38:22 am »

Just a little gloat about how the noggyfighter is back up & running after hibernating in its little wooden noggy nest. 8)

I go with dont touch it, start it until your ready to use it ethos, i take the battery out, clean & oil the bike & i maybe bring it out the shed now & again to do some fettling but i never start it up & this worked a treat last year.

So again i did an oil change first, then the coolant (only coz i was a numpty & a pipe came off :rolleyes )

Started her up last night but i had a massive stutter & she just wasnt running or even blippable on the throttle.

Came back to it today, lifted the tank, checked fuel pipe, got some more air outta the coolant system & topped up.....then took each plugs off & squirted with WD40.

Worked a treat :woot

Had her bouncing off the limiter & got rid of the cobwebs.

So after reading on here on various rough running issues it goes to show that starting with the basics can pay off & yes WD40 & black tape can & will fix everything. :b

Heres a pic of the noggyfighter at noggy towers 8)

Time to ride the thing. :sun :sun :sun
