Stiff Centre & Side Stand..
« on: 11 March 2015, 03:20:45 pm »
Both the centre & side stands on my '98 Fazer 600 are fairly stiff…what's the best method for freeing them up a bit..?

Cheers in advance chaps..

Clean the accumulated road gunk off, and spray WD40 in there.

Probably stiff due to grit in there. Clean it!  :lol :lol :lol

Make sure and check it carefully for cracks, especially on the bar that goes between the two legs. If this becomes weakened, which seems to happen a lot with them, then it can flex too much on it's two mounts which can make it stiff. Make sure the bolts haven't been done up too tight, and a general clean and wd40 should free it up a bit.

Chris

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Wd40 is fine for driving water off surfaces and general cleaning, but it's useless as a lubricant in that situation.
You need to dismantle and clean the stands and pivots, then pack them with the heaviest grease you can get hold of.

I used to do that, but it gunked up really fast. I would spray WD40 on it once a fortnight (with daily use of both), and that kept it happy.

Ive had this problem intermitently on my fazer for the last 5 years, but ive got it sussed now.Clean the crap/chain lube of the pivot with a stiff brush and some parrafin then wash and blast with a pressure washer. If you have a compressor blast the air nozzle into the gaps in the pivot to blast to blow out the last of the crap, and spray some wd40 into the pivot.Repeat wd every  couple of weeks or when you lube the chain.

Pressure washer on bikes is never a great idea in my opinion.
You're either forcing water into places that really don't want it, or blowing paint off.
More people are born because of alcohol than will ever die from it.

Yup. This talk of blasting the crap out, and doing it every two weeks - well that's why you're doing it every 2 weeks! Clean it properly, get some decent grease in there. Wd40 is not a lubricant!

Sometimes so called "solutions" only create problems.
As said follow the advice already given about stripping, cleaning, greasing.
You cant overtighten the mount bolts for centre stand since they are only threaded for a certain distance-the midsection acts as pivot for the stand.
WD40 has its uses but is NOT suitable for lubricating areas that require GREASE.
While you are dismantling stand-there is NO OTHER Way to lubricate it properly-thats why it gets "forgotten"-check for structural integrity-ie that its not corroded/weakened to the point where the legs move out of alignment.
Its cheaper & safer in the long run to do the job properly-a collapsed stand is not funny! :eek

Calm down girls,i was only passing on what works for me and if used properly a pressure washer used on a motorcycle is actually invaluable, and the pressure washer scaremongers have usually never used one.In nearly 30 years of biking ive used one on nearly every bike ive owned and never had water ingress into a suspension or wheel bearing, even my boys mx bikes have never been damaged from a pressure washers use as it needs cleaning after every outing. As for blowing paint off,you probably shouldnt be allowed to use a mechanically propelled vehicle if youve not got the sense to put a pressure washer lance an inch from your body work. The linkeages on the fazer are stripped and checked and regreased twice a year as its used every day and id notice if there was any water ingress in them.

If youd bothered to read the post properly i said i put some wd in the cetre stand  when i lubed the chain, not go through the whole cleaning process every two weeks and yes once a year the pin is removed and regreased which funnily enough hasnt been killed to death with the pressure washer.

Sometimes so called solutions actually work and dont create problems 5 years and 27000 miles of fazer ownership ridden every day with no problems, the reason the pivot hasnt fractured as they do on some is because its properly maintained. And i guess you guys who say wd isnt a lubricant perhaps you should buy a tin cuz  as i rembeber it says frees sticky mechanisms on the tin :lol

the only solution is to take it off.
you'll probably find that the inner shaft is very rusty 'thats why its so hard to move'
you need to remove it regardless what some say.
clean the shaft thoroughly and while you at it...
check for cracks or broken welds etc.if you find ant get it fixed before you put it back on.
if there is cracks etc and you put it back on you may find your bike on it side more grief .
put grease on shaft and the tubing.
if you've got the gear..drill and tap and put in a grease nipple in for future regreasing.
this will save all the hassle of taking it off.
If I wanted to make a life-long career out of

have opened a Harley Davidson Dealership!

Plus one on the grease nipple mod,it will negate the whole problem.

I know, my shed is a state, i started tidying it out yesterday coz i couldnt work on my thou, i was squeezing around and kept knocking things over, ive got a few 600 items but nothing majorly exciting but the centre stand is solid and has a good lick of Hammerite paint over it, a worthy item especially for the future when they all start snapping in half.
