Phew!   :D

Suspected the rear switch.  Time to get the Haynes manual out.

Afternoon all.

Liverpool losing so i have abandoned the football and looking at small problem on t'Fazer.

When starting the bike and with the lights switch in off position, there is no front light (fine) but a bright rear light.  The only thing is that when i apply the brake, both rear and front, the light barely changes intensity to register the brake.

Thoughts?  Also (and i risk sounding potentially stoopid) should the rear light be on when switch in off position?

Thanks!  Its a very good point as once the first batch of oil went in i did exactly that.  Turned the engine on then re-checked the little window and most of the oil had gone :D .
Swift top and sorted - boring addition but used Motul 5000 10 W40 semi synthetic.

Bike already sounds 'cleaner'!

A glorious sight to see fresh clean oil through the little oil level window. And what a monumental ball ache it was removing the filter!  My oil filter removal cap was 76mm, Fazer filter 70mm.  Take 2 - chain wrench only to find my tool kit didn't have a 1/2 inch extension bar to poke through the cage of the downpipes.  Take 3 - drive screwdriver through filter (not the best idea) and prise off that way - succeeded only in destroying filter.  Take 4 - buy extension bar for chain wrench, that worked but still an absolute pain.  Sill, its a Fazer with lovely clean oil and as i look out of my window, the sun is hardly shining but it's dry so i'm off out

Lovely blue Fazer!  Liking the black fork bottoms :) .  Its a part of my Fazer which really spoils it.  Everything else is pretty clean for the age of the bike but let down by the nasty corrosion on the forks.

I have access to a powder coater but assume its not an easy job removing the forks so a job for later in the year.

General / Re: what did you do with your fazer today ?

Started it.  Which thankfully after a bleak few months was successful.  Bought some new oil, a filter and some rear brake pads.  As the days are getting longer i can smell the hope of starting to use it again.

Only passed test last year but passed late August so i missed most of Spring & Summer  :'(

FZS600 Fazer / Boring Oil Question

Hi All

Sorry for what is no doubt a common question, but as the weather is looking like drying up, i thought i'd give the old girl a service of sorts (the bike that is ;) ).

Has anyone any got any oil type recommendations? There's currently a batch of 10w-40 'Yamalube' in there but handbook info seems to lend itself towards 10w 30?

Much obliged!

I share your pain -  :) .

I'm 6ft 4 and although i'm a new biker, the buffeting on my 99 Fazer is frightening, especially on the M6!!!

I initially (on the M'way) was gripping so hard i had to be prised off when i got home  :) .

Getting used to it now but appreciate the advice on the taller screens and ducking!!

-- For smoother gear changes make sure the pedal is at a low enough angle to make it easier for your toes to give it a good positive upwards "click".  When I first got the bike I found that I kept missing up-changes and hitting neutral.  I lowered the lever a cm and never had the problem again.

-- For cornering it really helps if you keep your knees tight on the tank, your upper body loose and toes on the pegs...for right handers, push with your left foot on the peg and right hand on the bars and vice versa, in other words countersteering.

Have a read of the "Full Control" PDF I've just stuck in the Downloads section, it's very good.

Awesome - cheers dude!  Have hit neutral once or twice only to be met with a screaming engine and no oomph  :)

#1 It helps if you change early from 1st to 2nd, ie. no higher than 4k rpm
#2 What's the problem? I change from 6th to 1st without releasing the clutch in between.

Fair enough - my mate advised me best practice was to engage clutch at every down shift.  Whatever suits i suppose  :) !  Interesting to hear what other people do anyway.  Thanks for 1st to 2nd advice too!

Rear wheel steering!

(well, not quite, shut up Marquez,,,)

I actually played with this a little today (safely and slowly i may add) and quite effective i thought.  Quite how much this will creep into my day to day riding remains to be seen  :)

Ha - sorry i quoted wrong reply!  Needless to say, never played with rear wheel steer, it was counter steering i played with  :b

Hi all.

Only 1 1/2 weeks since a passed my Mod 2 test, thought i'd share the trials and tribulations of my early biking experiences on the Fazer:

1)  Clunky gear changes.  1st to 2nd especially but has taken me about 150 miles of riding to start smoothing them out.  Mod 1 & 2 lessons do not teach effective gear changing.
2)  Changing down.  For reasons unbeknown, i coasted (clutch in) then went down the gears without engaging clutch.  Mate of mine told me engage clutch at every down shift - works a treat!  Again, Mod 1 & 2 lessons do not teach this.
3)  Cornering.  Still a little clumsy at times or slow but confidence slowly increasing.
4)  Speed!  I think i am going about 100mph then i look down at speedo and oh Foc, i'm only doing 30mph :) .  Getting used to this now thankfully!  Have to say, haven't enjoyed early motorway experiences!
5)  Other bikers.  Great bunch of folk.  Not a word of complaint, all very friendly and always up for a chat!

So much oomf in the thing, haven't stretched it outside of 6,000 rpm yet!   :)

You'll notice when you do mate.  ;)

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. Passed my tests almost 4 months ago and bought a 600 straight after. I love the kick up the arse you get when it hits 7,000!  :eek

Well, if it stays dry tonight, i may venture down the path of the unknown.......past 6,000rpm!!  Wish me luck :D

Hi Rob
I live in Heysham to and if you want a run out or meet up give me a tx on 07533723184 or I will b at Bullbeck butty bar at Caton on most sundays at 10.30.
If there r any other Fazer owners that fancy a run I am always up for a run out at weekends.
By the way Rob u have bought the best do anything bike ever made, and when u get used to it u will love it.
Stuart

Appreciate that!  Weather permitting, i'll try and get to Bullbeck on Sunday!  Managed to get out briefly round the Overton backroads yesterday trying to smooth out my gear changes!  With a little less on/off with the throttle they became much smoother.  So much oomf in the thing, haven't stretched it outside of 6,000 rpm yet!   :)

General / Re: When did you pass your test and how difficult was it?
« on: 29 August 2013, 07:32:56 am »
Just passed my Mod 2 last week.  Took me about 5 months all in all and best part of £750.
CBT & theory pretty straight forward.  Mod 1 was a pain, failed twice and as a new biker with next to no biking experience, i feel its easy to fail, i also understand why.  Failing has made me a "better" biker as i learnt from it.
Mod 2 wasn't a wak in the park but passed 1st time but there are a lot of areas you have keep on top of especially your observations.  All in all, i think the expereince has also made me a better car driver too mainly through being much more aware of whats going on around me.

I have not long passed my test and was petrified  when i took my bike on the M6.  I have clocked probably 400,000+ miles on the motorways in various cars but the sensation on 2 wheels is intense!

I take all the points on ear plugs and i'll try and adjust my body position next time i'm on.  I'm a 6ft 4 17st lump!

Hi All!
Passed my Mod 2 last week and went for a gorgeous T Reg Fazer in gold.  Very well looked after (i have to try and keep on top of the good condition!) and only 19k on the clock.
Had my first blast out to Devils Bridge & Trough of Bowland on Sunday and what a way to spend a sunny afternoon!  Looking forward to clocking up many a mile - just need to iron out a few clunky gear changes first  :\ !
